1 An admonition can be inopportune, and a man may be wise to hold his peace.	1 Meglio è morbidamente riprendere, che con ira, e non divietare colui che si confessa nella orazione.
2 It is much better to admonish than to lose one's temper, for one who admits his fault will be kept from disgrace.	2 La concupiscenza del castrato isverginoe la giovinezza;
3 Like a eunuch lusting for intimacy with a maiden is he who does right under compulsion.	3 così colui che per forza giudica.
4 One man is silent and is thought wise, another is talkative and is disliked.	4 Come è buona cosa, che colui che è corretto il manifesti per penitenza! Fuggirai così il volontario peccato.
5 One man is silent because he has nothing to say; another is silent, biding his time.	5 Ed è uno che tace, il quale è trovato savio; ed è da odiare colui ch' è disposto al molto favellare.
6 A wise man is silent till the right time comes, but a boasting fool ignores the proper time.	6 Ed è un altro che tace, però che non ha sentimento della parlatura; ed è tacente colui che sa il tempo acconcio a parlare.
7 He who talks too much is detested; he who pretends to authority is hated.	7 L'uomo savio tacerae infino al tempo; e lo sciocco e il semplice non guarderanno tempo.
8 Some misfortunes bring success; some things gained are a man's loss.	8 Colui che usa molte parole, offende l'anima sua; e colui che si toglie signoria ingiustamente, sarà odiato.
9 Some gifts do one no good, and some must be paid back double.	9 L'uomo non ammaestrato procede ne' mali, e in lui è trovamento di danno.
10 Humiliation can follow fame, while from obscurity a man can lift up his head.	10 Egli è uno dono che non è utile; ed è uno, il cui merito è doppio.
11 A man may buy much for little, but pay for it seven times over.	11 Ed è una remunerazione per avere fama; ed è chi per umilitade leva il capo.
12 A wise man makes himself popular by a few words, but fools pour forth their blandishments in vain.	12 Ed è chi molte cose ricompera per piccolo prezzo, ed è chi restituisce in sette doppi.
13 A gift from a rogue will do you no good, for in his eyes his one gift is equal to seven.	13 Il savio nelle parole fa sè medesimo amabile; ma le grazie de' matti si gittano.
14 He gives little and criticizes often, and like a crier he shouts aloud. He lends today, he asks it back tomorrow; hateful indeed is such a man.	14 Lo dono dello insipido non sarà utile a te; però che gli occhi di colui sono settiplicati.
15 A fool has no friends, nor thanks for his generosity;	15 Picciole cose darà, e molte cose rimpropererae; e l'aprimento della bocca sua partorisce molti mali.
16 Those who eat his bread have an evil tongue. How many times they laugh him to scorn!	16 Alcuno presta oggi, e domane più domanda; odioso è cotale uomo.
17 A fall to the ground is less sudden than a slip of the tongue; that is why the downfall of the wicked comes so quickly.	17 E non avere per amico il pazzo (non sarà amico); non sarà grazia nelli beni di colui.
18 Insipid food is the untimely tale; the unruly are always ready to offer it.	18 Coloro che mangiano il pane dello stolto sono di falsa lingua. Oh quanti e quante volte lo scherniranno!
19 A proverb when spoken by a fool is unwelcome, for he does not utter it at the proper time.	19 Nè ancora quello che era da avere, darae con diritto senno; distribuiscene similmente e quello che non era d'avere.
20 A man through want may be unable to sin, yet in this tranquility he cannot rest.	20 Il cadere di falsa lingua è sì come il cadere in suso lo smalto; così lo cadimento de' rei verrà tostamente.
21 One may lose his life through shame, and perish through a fool's intimidation.	21 L'uomo sgrazioso è sì come favola; nella bocca delli non ammaestrati sarae continua.
22 A man makes a promise to a friend out of shame, and has him for his enemy needlessly.	22 Il proverbio ch' esce della bocca del pazzo, sarà biasimato; però che non lo dice nello suo tempo.
23 A lie is a foul blot in a man, yet it is constantly on the lips of the unruly.	23 Elli è alcuno che non puote peccare per povertade; e nel suo riposo fia stimolato.
24 Better a thief than an inveterate liar, yet both will suffer disgrace;	24 Ed è chi perde l'anima per timidezza, e chi per isciocchezza perde quella; per autorità d' alcuna persona perde sè.
25 A liar's way leads to dishonor, his shame remains ever with him.	25 Ed è alcuno che per vergogna promette all'amico; e sì se l'ha guadagnato per nimico.
26 A wise man advances himself by his words, a prudent man pleases the great.	26 Sozzo vituperio è nella bocca dell' uomo la bugia; e quella fia spesso nella bocca de' non savi.
27 He who works his land has abundant crops, he who pleases the great is pardoned his faults.	27 Migliore è il ladro, che la continuanza dell' uomo bugiardo; e l'uno e l'altro erediteranno perdizione.
28 Favors and gifts blind the eyes; like a muzzle over the mouth they silence reproof.	28 Li costumi delli uomini sono bugie sanza onore; e la confusione di coloro sì è con loro sanza intervallo.
29 Hidden wisdom and unseen treasure-- of what value is either?	29 Il savio nelle parole farà grande sè medesimo, e l'uomo prudente adumilierà li potenti.
30 Better the man who hides his folly than the one who hides his wisdom.	30 Chi lavora la terra sua inalza il monte delle biade, e chi opera giustizia sarà esaltato; colui che piace alli gloriosi, schiferà iniquità.
	31 Li presenti e li doni accecano li occhi dei giudici, e sì come al muto nella bocca loro isvolgeranno li castigamenti di coloro.
	32 Sapienza ascosa e tesoro non veduto, che utilità è nell' uno e nell' altro?
	33 Migliore è colui che cela la sciocchezza sua, che l'uomo che nasconde la sapienza sua.
