Genesis 29

1 After Jacob resumed his journey, he came to the land of the Easterners.	1 Jacob continua son chemin, et arriva au pays de l'orient.
2 Looking about, he saw a well in the open country, with three droves of sheep huddled near it, for droves were watered from that well. A large stone covered the mouth of the well.	2 Il entra dans un champ où il vit un puits, et trois troupeaux de brebis qui se reposaient auprès; car on y menait boire les troupeaux, et l'entrée en était fermée avec une grande pierre.
3 Only when all the shepherds were assembled there could they roll the stone away from the mouth of the well and water the flocks. Then they would put the stone back again over the mouth of the well.	3 C'était la coutume de ne lever la pierre que lorsque tous les troupeaux étaient assemblés; et après qu'ils avaient bu, on la remettait sur l'ouverture du puits.
4 Jacob said to them, "Friends, where are you from?" "We are from Haran," they replied.	4 Jacob dit donc aux pasteurs: Mes frères, d'où êtes-vous? Ils lui répondirent: De Haran.
5 Then he asked them, "Do you know Laban, son of Nahor?" "We do," they answered.	5 Jacob ajouta: Ne connaissez-vous point Laban, fils de Nachor? Ils lui dirent: Nous le connaissons.
6 He inquired further, "Is he well?" "He is," they answered; "and here comes his daughter Rachel with his flock."	6 Se porte-t-il bien? dit Jacob. Ils lui répondirent: Il se porte bien; et voici sa fille Rachel, qui vient ici avec son troupeau.
7 Then he said: "There is still much daylight left; it is hardly the time to bring the animals home. Why don't you water the flocks now, and then continue pasturing them?"	7 Jacob leur dit: Il reste encore beaucoup de jour, et il n'est pas temps de reconduire les troupeaux dans l'étable; faites donc boire présentement les brebis, et ensuite vous les remènerez paître.
8 "We cannot," they replied, "until all the shepherds are here to roll the stone away from the mouth of the well; only then can we water the flocks."	8 Ils lui répondirent: Nous ne pouvons le faire, jusqu'à ce que tous les troupeaux soient assemblés, et que nous ayons ôté la pierre de dessus le puits, pour leur donner à boire à tous ensemble.
9 While he was still talking with them, Rachel arrived with her father's sheep; she was the one who tended them.	9 Ils parlaient encore, lorsque Rachel arriva avec les brebis de son père; car elle menait paître elle-même le troupeau.
10 As soon as Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of his uncle Laban, with the sheep of his uncle Laban, he went up, rolled the stone away from the mouth of the well, and watered his uncle's sheep.	10 Jacob, l'ayant vue, et sachant qu'elle était sa cousine, et que ces troupeaux étaient à Laban son oncle, ôta la pierre qui fermait le puits.
11 Then Jacob kissed Rachel and burst into tears.	11 Et ayant fait boire son troupeau, il la baisa, et il pleura à haute voix,
12 He told her that he was her father's relative, Rebekah's son, and she ran to tell her father.	12 Et il lui dit qu'il était le frère de son père, et le fils de Rébecca. Rachel courut aussitôt le dire à son père,
13 When Laban heard the news about his sister's son Jacob, he hurried out to meet him. After embracing and kissing him, he brought him to his house. Jacob then recounted to Laban all that had happened,	13 Qui, ayant appris que Jacob fils de sa soeur était venu, courut au-devant de lui, l'embrassa étroitement, et l'ayant baisé plusieurs fois, le mena en sa maison. Lorsqu'il eut su de lui-même le sujet de son voyage,
14 and Laban said to him, "You are indeed my flesh and blood." After Jacob had stayed with him a full month,	14 Il lui dit: Vous êtes ma chair et mon sang. Et après qu'un mois se fut passé,
15 Laban said to him: "Should you serve me for nothing just because you are a relative of mine? Tell me what your wages should be."	15 Il dit à Jacob: Faut-il que vous me serviez gratuitement, parce que vous êtes mon frère? Dites-moi donc quelle récompense vous désirez.
16 Now Laban had two daughters; the older was called Leah, the younger Rachel.	16 Or Laban avait deux filles, dont l'aînée s'appelait Lia, et la plus jeune Rachel.
17 Leah had lovely eyes, but Rachel was well formed and beautiful.	17 Mais Lia avait les yeux chassieux; au lieu que Rachel était belle et très agréable.
18 Since Jacob had fallen in love with Rachel, he answered Laban, "I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter Rachel."	18 Jacob, ayant donc conçu de l'affection pour elle, dit à Laban: Je vous servirai sept ans pour Rachel votre seconde fille.
19 Laban replied, "I prefer to give her to you rather than to an outsider. Stay with me."	19 Laban lui répondit: Il vaut mieux que je vous la donne qu'à un autre; demeurez avec moi.
20 So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, yet they seemed to him but a few days because of his love for her.	20 Jacob le servit donc sept ans pour Rachel; et ce temps ne lui paraissait que peu de jours, tant l'affection qu'il avait pour elle était grande.
21 Then Jacob said to Laban, "Give me my wife, that I may consummate my marriage with her, for my term is now completed."	21 Après celà il dit à Laban: Donnez-moi ma femme, puisque le temps auquel je dois l'épouser est accompli.
22 So Laban invited all the local inhabitants and gave a feast.	22 Alors Laban fit les noces, ayant invité au festin ses amis qui étaient en fort grand nombre.
23 At nightfall he took his daughter Leah and brought her to Jacob, and Jacob consummated the marriage with her.	23 Et le soir il fit entrer Lia sa fille auprès de Jacob,
24 (Laban assigned his slave girl Zilpah to his daughter Leah as her maidservant.)	24 Et lui donna, pour la servir, une esclave qui s'appelait Zelpha. Jacob, l'ayant prise pour sa femme, reconnut le matin que c'était Lia;
25 In the morning Jacob was amazed: it was Leah! So he cried out to Laban: "How could you do this to me! Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why did you dupe me?"	25 Et il dit à son beau-père: D'où vient que vous m'avez traité de cette sorte? Ne vous ai-je pas servi pour Rachel? Pourquoi m'avez-vous trompé?
26 "It is not the custom in our country," Laban replied, "to marry off a younger daughter before an older one.	26 Laban répondit: Ce n'est pas la coutume de ce pays-ci de marier les filles les plus jeunes les premières.
27 Finish the bridal week for this one, and then I will give you the other too, in return for another seven years of service with me."	27 Passez la semaine avec celle-ci; et je vous donnerai l'autre ensuite, pour le temps de sept années que vous me servirez de nouveau.
28 Jacob agreed. He finished the bridal week for Leah, and then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel in marriage.	28 Jacob consentit à ce qu'il voulait: et au bout de sept jours il épousa Rachel,
29 (Laban assigned his slave girl Bilhah to his daughter Rachel as her maidservant.)	29 A qui son père avait donné une servante nommée Bala.
30 Jacob then consummated his marriage with Rachel also, and he loved her more than Leah. Thus he remained in Laban's service another seven years.	30 Jacob ayant eu enfin celle qu'il avait souhaité d'épouser, il préféra la seconde à l'aînée dans l'affection qu'il lui portait, et servit encore Laban pour elle sept ans durant.
31 When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, he made her fruitful, while Rachel remained barren.	31 Mais le Seigneur, voyant que Jacob avait du mépris pour Lia, la rendit féconde, pendant que sa soeur demeurait stérile.
32 Leah conceived and bore a son, and she named him Reuben; for she said, "It means, 'The LORD saw my misery; now my husband will love me.'"	32 Elle conçut donc, et elle enfanta un fils qu'elle nomma Ruben, en disant: Le Seigneur a vu mon humiliation; mon mari m'aimera maintenant.
33 She conceived again and bore a son, and said, "It means, 'The LORD heard that I was unloved,' and therefore he has given me this one also"; so she named him Simeon.	33 Elle conçut encore, et ayant enfanté un fils, elle dit: Le Seigneur, ayant connu que j'étais méprisée, m'a donné ce second fils. C'est pourquoi elle le nomma Siméon.
34 Again she conceived and bore a son, and she said, "Now at last my husband will become attached to me, since I have now borne him three sons"; that is why she named him Levi.	34 Elle conçut pour la troisième fois, et ayant encore enfanté, et ayant encore enfanté un fils, elle dit: Maintenant mon mari sera plus uni à moi, puisque je lui ai donné trois fils. C'est pourquoi elle le nomma Lévi.
35 Once more she conceived and bore a son, and she said, "This time I will give grateful praise to the LORD"; therefore she named him Judah. Then she stopped bearing children.	35 Elle conçut pour la quatrième fois, et elle enfanta un fils, et elle dit: Maintenant je louerai le Seigneur. C'est pourquoi elle lui donna le nom de Juda; et elle cessa pour lors d'avoir des enfants.
