Sirach 6

1 Instead of a friend become not an enemy; for [thereby] thou shalt inherit an ill name, shame, and reproach: even so shall a sinner that hath a double tongue.	1 De amigo não te tornes inimigo do teu próximo, porque o mau terá por sorte a vergonha e a ignomínia, como todo o pecador invejoso e de língua dobre.
2 Extol not thyself in the counsel of thine own heart; that thy soul be not torn in pieces as a bull [straying alone.]	2 Não te eleves como um touro no pensamento do teu coração, para não suceder que a tua loucura quebre a tua força,
3 Thou shalt eat up thy leaves, and lose thy fruit, and leave thyself as a dry tree.	3 consuma as tuas folhas e perca os teus frutos, e tu venhas a ficar como uma árvore seca no deserto.
4 A wicked soul shall destroy him that hath it, and shall make him to be laughed to scorn of his enemies.	4 A alma maligna perderá aquele que a tem, torná-lo-á a alegria dos seus inimigos. e conduzi-lo-á à sorte dos ímpios.
5 Sweet language will multiply friends: and a fairspeaking tongue will increase kind greetings.	5 A palavra doce multiplica os amigos e amansa os inimigos; a linguagem amável abunda no homem bom.
6 Be in peace with many: nevertheless have but one counsellor of a thousand.	6 Dá-te bem com muitos, mas seja teu conselheiro um entre mil.
7 If thou wouldest get a friend, prove him first and be not hasty to credit him.	7 Se queres ter um amigo, toma-o depois de o teres provado, e não te fies facilmente nele.
8 For some man is a friend for his own occasion, and will not abide in the day of thy trouble.	8 Com efeito, há tal amigo que somente o é quando nisso acha a sua conveniência, e que deixará de o ser no dia da tribulação.
9 And there is a friend, who being turned to enmity, and strife will discover thy reproach.	9 E há amigo que se muda em inimigo; e há amigo que porá a descoberto ódios, disputas e rixas;
10 Again, some friend is a companion at the table, and will not continue in the day of thy affliction.	10 e há amigo que só o é para a mesa, e que o não será no dia da necessidade.
11 But in thy prosperity he will be as thyself, and will be bold over thy servants.	11 Se o teu amigo perseverar firme, será para ti como um igual, tratará à vontade com os da tua casa.
12 If thou be brought low, he will be against thee, and will hide himself from thy face.	12 Se ele se humilhar diante de ti e se apagar na tua presença, terás uma amizade excelente na união dos corações.
13 Separate thyself from thine enemies, and take heed of thy friends.	13 Separa-te dos teus inimigos, e está alerta com os teus amigos.
14 A faithfu1l friend is a strong defence: and he that hath found such an one hath found a treasure.	14 O amigo fiel é uma forte protecção; quem o encontrou, encontrou um tesouro.
15 Nothing doth countervail a faithful friend, and his excellency is invaluable.	15 Nada se pode comparar com um amigo fiel, e o ouro e a prata não merecem ser postos em balança com a sinceridade da sua fé.
16 A faithful friend is the medicine of life; and they that fear the Lord shall find him.	16 O amigo fiel é uma medicina de vida e de imortalidade; os que temem o Senhor acharão um tal amigo.
17 Whoso feareth the Lord shall direct his friendship aright: for as he is, so shall his neighbour be also.	17 O que teme a Deus será, por isso mesmo, feliz na amizade, porque o seu amigo será semelhante a ele.
18 My son, gather instruction from thy youth up: so shalt thou find wisdom till thine old age.	18 Filho, desde a tua mocidade recebe a Instrução, e adquirirás uma sabedoria que te dure até à velhice,
19 Come unto her as one that ploweth and soweth, and wait for her good fruits: for thou shalt not toil much in labouring about her, but thou shalt eat of her fruits right soon.	19 Aproxima-te da sabedoria, como o que lavra e semeia, e espera os seus bons frutos.
20 She is very unpleasant to the unlearned: he that is without understanding will not remain with her.	20 Trabalharás (apenas) um pouco na sua cultura, e depressa comerás dos seus frutos.
21 She will lie upon him as a mighty stone of trial; and he will cast her from him ere it be long.	21 Quão excessivamente áspera é a sabedoria para os néscios! Não permanecerá junto dela o insensato.
22 For wisdom is according to her name, and she is not manifest unto many.	22 Será para eles como uma pedra pesada que serve para provar, e não tardarão em se descarregarem dela.
23 Give ear, my son, receive my advice, and refuse not my counsel,	23 Porque a sabedoria que instrui é como o seu nome, não se manifesta a muitos (à maioria das pessoas); mas naqueles que a conhecem, permanece até (os levar) à presença de Deus.
24 And put thy feet into her fetters, and thy neck into her chain.	24 Ouve, filho, recebe uma sábia advertência, não rejeites o meu conselho.
25 Bow down thy shoulder, and bear her, and be not grieved with her bonds.	25 Mete os teus pés nos seus grilhões, e o teu pescoço nas suas cadelas.
26 Come unto her with thy whole heart, and keep her ways with all thy power.	26 Baixa o teu ombro, leva-a às costas, e não te aborreças com as suas prisões.
27 Search, and seek, and she shall be made known unto thee: and when thou hast got hold of her, let her not go.	27 Aproxima-te dela de todo o teu coração, guarda os seus caminhos com todas as tuas forças.
28 For at the last thou shalt find her rest, and that shall be turned to thy joy.	28 Segue os seus vestígios, e ela se te manifestará; quando já a possuíres, não a deixes,
29 Then shall her fetters be a strong defence for thee, and her chains a robe of glory.	29 porque nela encontrarás, no fim, o teu descanso,e ela se converterá para ti em gosto.
30 For there is a golden ornament upon her, and her bands are purple lace.	30 Os seus grilhões serão para ti uma forte protecção e um firme apoio, as suas cadeias um vestido de glória:
31 Thou shalt put her on as a robe of honour, and shalt put her about thee as a crown of joy.	31 nela está realmente uma beleza que dá a vida, e os seus vínculos são ligaduras que saram.
32 My son, if thou wilt, thou shalt be taught: and if thou wilt apply thy mind, thou shalt be prudent.	32 Tu te revestirás dela como duma veste de glória, e a porás sobre ti como uma coroa de regozijo.
33 If thou love to hear, thou shalt receive understanding: and if thou bow thine ear, thou shalt be wise,	33 Filho, se me deres atenção, aprenderás, e, se aplicares o teu espírito, serás sábio.
34 Stand in the multitude of the elders; and cleave unto him that is wise.	34 Se me ouvires, receberás a instrução, e se fores amigo de ouvir, serás sábio.
35 Be willing to hear every godly discourse; and let not the parables of understanding escape thee.	35 Frequenta a reunião dos velhos prudentes, une-te de coração à sua sabedoria; a fim de poderes ouvir tudo o que te disserem de Deus, e de não te escaparem as suas louváveis sentenças.
36 And if thou seest a man of understanding, get thee betimes unto him, and let thy foot wear the steps of his door.	36 Se vires um homem sensato, madruga para ir ter com ele, e gastem os teus pés os degraus da sua porta.
37 Let thy mind be upon the ordinances of the Lord and meditate continually in his commandments: he shall establish thine heart, and give thee wisdom at thine owns desire.	37 Fixa a tua atenção nos preceitos de Deus medita continuamente os seus mandamentos, que ele mesmo te dará um coração (firme no bem), e ser-te-á dada a desejada sabedoria.
