Εν δε τω Ικονιω εισελθοντες ομου εις την συναγωγην των Ιουδαιων, ελαλησαν ουτως ωστε επιστευσε πολυ πληθος Ιουδαιων τε και Ελληνων.1 Now it happened in Iconium that they entered together into the synagogue of the Jews, and they spoke in such a way that a copious multitude of both Jews and Greeks believed.
Οσοι δε Ιουδαιοι δεν επειθοντο παρωξυναν και διεστρεψαν τας ψυχας των εθνικων κατα των αδελφων.2 Yet truly, the Jews who were unbelieving had incited and enflamed the souls of the Gentiles against the brothers.
Ικανον λοιπον καιρον διετριψαν λαλουντες μετα παρρησιας περι του Κυριου, οστις εμαρτυρει εις τον λογον της χαριτος αυτου, και εδιδε να γινωνται σημεια και τερατα δια των χειρων αυτων.3 And so, they remained for a long time, acting faithfully in the Lord, offering testimony to the Word of his grace, providing signs and wonders done by their hands.
Εσχισθη δε το πληθος της πολεως, και οι μεν ησαν μετα των Ιουδαιων, οι δε μετα των αποστολων.4 Then the multitude of the city was divided. And certainly, some were with the Jews, yet truly others were with the Apostles.
Και οτε ωρμησαν οι εθνικοι και οι Ιουδαιοι μετα των αρχοντων αυτων εις το να υβρισωσι και να λιθοβολησωσιν αυτους,5 Now when an assault had been planned by the Gentiles and the Jews with their leaders, so that they might treat them with contempt and stone them,
εννοησαντες κατεφυγον εις τας πολεις της Λυκαονιας Λυστραν και Δερβην και τα περιχωρα,6 they, realizing this, fled together to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the entire surrounding region. And they were evangelizing in that place.
και εκει εκηρυττον το ευαγγελιον.7 And a certain man was sitting at Lystra, disabled in his feet, lame from his mother’s womb, who had never walked.
And Paul, gazing at him intently, and perceiving that he had faith, so that he might be healed,
Ουτος ηκουε τον Παυλον λαλουντα? οστις ατενισας εις αυτον και ιδων οτι εχει πιστιν δια να σωθη,9 said with a loud voice, “Stand upright upon your feet!” And he leaped up and walked around.
ειπε μετα μεγαλης φωνης? Σηκωθητι επι τους ποδας σου ορθος. Και επηδα και περιεπατει.10 But when the crowds had seen what Paul had done, they lifted up their voice in the Lycaonian language, saying, “The gods, having taken the likenesses of men, have descended to us!”
Οι δε οχλοι, ιδοντες τουτο το οποιον εκαμεν ο Παυλος, υψωσαν την φωνην αυτων, λεγοντες Λυκαονιστι? Οι θεοι ομοιωθεντες με ανθρωπους κατεβησαν προς ημας.11 And they called Barnabas, ‘Jupiter,’ yet truly they called Paul, ‘Mercury,’ because he was the lead speaker.
Και ωνομαζον τον μεν Βαρναβαν Δια, τον δε Παυλον Ερμην, επειδη αυτος ητο ο αρχηγος του λογου.12 Also, the priest of Jupiter, who was outside the city, in front of the gate, bringing in oxen and garlands, was willing to offer sacrifice with the people.
Και ο ιερευς του Διος, του οντος εμπροσθεν της πολεως αυτων, εφερε ταυρους και στεμματα εις τας πυλας μετα του οχλου και ηθελε να προσφερη θυσιαν.13 And as soon as the Apostles, Barnabas and Paul, had heard this, tearing their tunics, they leapt into the crowd, crying out
Ακουσαντες δε οι αποστολοι Βαρναβας και Παυλος, διεσχισαν τα ιματια αυτων και επηδησαν εις το μεσον του οχλου, κραζοντες14 and saying: “Men, why would you do this? We also are mortals, men like yourselves, preaching to you to be converted, from these vain things, to the living God, who made heaven and earth and the sea and all that is in them.
και λεγοντες? Ανδρες, τι καμνετε ταυτα; και ημεις ειμεθα ανθρωποι ομοιοπαθεις με σας, κηρυττοντες προς εσας να επιστρεψητε απο τουτων των ματαιων προς τον Θεον τον ζωντα, οστις εκαμε τον ουρανον και την γην και την θαλασσαν και παντα τα εν αυτοις?15 In previous generations, he permitted all nations to walk in their own ways.
οστις εν ταις παρελθουσαις γενεαις αφηκε παντα τα εθνη να περιπατωσιν εν ταις οδοις αυτων.16 But certainly, he did not leave himself without testimony, doing good from heaven, giving rains and fruitful seasons, filling their hearts with food and gladness.”
καιτοι δεν αφηκεν αμαρτυρητον εαυτον αγαθαποιων, διδων εις ημας ουρανοθεν βροχας και καιρους καρποφορους, γεμιζων τροφης και ευφροσυνης τας καρδιας ημων.17 And by saying these things, they were barely able to restrain the crowds from immolating to them.
Και ταυτα λεγοντες μολις εμποδισαν τους οχλους, ωστε να μη προσφερωσι θυσιαν εις αυτους.18 Now certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium arrived there. And having persuaded the crowd, they stoned Paul and dragged him outside of the city, thinking him to be dead.
Εν τουτω δε ηλθον Ιουδαιοι εξ Αντιοχειας και Ικονιου, και πεισαντες τους οχλους και λιθοβολησαντες τον Παυλον, εσυραν εξω της πολεως, νομισαντες οτι απεθανεν.19 But as the disciples were standing around him, he got up and entered the city. And the next day, he set out with Barnabas for Derbe.
Οτε δε περιεκυκλωσαν αυτον οι μαθηται, σηκωθεις εισηλθεν εις την πολιν και τη επαυριον εξηλθε μετα του Βαρναβα εις Δερβην.20 And when they had evangelized that city, and had taught many, they returned again to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch,
Και αφου εκηρυξαν το ευαγγελιον εν τη πολει εκεινη και εμαθητευσαν ικανους, υπεστρεψαν εις την Λυστραν και Ικονιον και Αντιοχειαν,21 strengthening the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them that they should remain always in the faith, and that it is necessary for us to enter into the kingdom of God through many tribulations.
επιστηριζοντες τας ψυχας των μαθητων, προτρεποντες να εμμενωσιν εις την πιστιν, και διδασκοντες οτι δια πολλων θλιψεων πρεπει να εισελθωμεν εις την βασιλειαν του Θεου.22 And when they had established priests for them in each church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, in whom they believed.
Και αφου εχειροτονησαν εις αυτους πρεσβυτερους κατα πασαν εκκλησιαν, προσευχηθεντες με νηστειας, αφιερωσαν αυτους εις τον Κυριον, εις τον οποιον ειχον πιστευσει.23 And traveling by way of Pisidia, they arrived in Pamphylia.
Και διελθοντες την Πισιδιαν ηλθον εις Παμφυλιαν,24 And having spoken the word of the Lord in Perga, they went down into Attalia.
και κηρυξαντες τον λογον εν Περγη, κατεβησαν εις Ατταλειαν,25 And from there, they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work which they had now accomplished.
και εκειθεν απεπλευσαν εις Αντιοχειαν, οθεν ησαν παραδεδομενοι εις την χαριν του Θεου δια το εργον, το οποιον εξετελεσαν.26 And when they had arrived and had gathered together the church, they related what great things God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.
Ελθοντες δε και συναξαντες την εκκλησιαν, ανηγγειλαν οσα εκαμεν ο Θεος δι' αυτων, και οτι ηνοιξεν εις τα εθνη θυραν πιστεως.27 And they remained for no small amount of time with the disciples.
Και διετριβον εκει ουκ ολιγον καιρον μετα των μαθητων.
