1 Abraham brach von dort auf und zog in den Negeb. Er ließ sich zwischen Kadesch und Schur nieder und hielt sich in Gerar als Fremder auf.	1 From there Abraham journeyed toward the territory of the Negeb, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar.
2 Abraham behauptete von Sara, seiner Frau: Sie ist meine Schwester. Da schickte Abimelech, der König von Gerar, hin und ließ Sara holen.	2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, "She is my sister." And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.
3 Nachts kam Gott zu Abimelech und sprach zu ihm im Traum: Du musst sterben wegen der Frau, die du dir genommen hast; sie ist verheiratet.	3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, "Behold, you are a dead man, because of the woman whom you have taken; for she is a man's wife."
4 Abimelech aber war ihr noch nicht nahe gekommen. Mein Herr, sagte er, willst du denn auch unschuldige Leute umbringen?	4 Now Abimelech had not approached her; so he said, "Lord, wilt thou slay an innocent people?
5 Hat er mir nicht gesagt, sie sei seine Schwester? Auch sie selbst hat behauptet, er sei ihr Bruder. Mit arglosem Herzen und mit reinen Händen habe ich das getan.	5 Did he not himself say to me, 'She is my sister? And she herself said, 'He is my brother.' In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands I have done this."
6 Da sprach Gott zu ihm im Traum: Auch ich weiß, dass du es mit arglosem Herzen getan hast. Ich habe dich ja auch daran gehindert, dich gegen mich zu verfehlen. Darum habe ich nicht zugelassen, dass du sie anrührst.	6 Then God said to him in the dream, "Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart, and it was I who kept you from sinning against me; therefore I did not let you touch her.
7 Jetzt aber gib die Frau dem Mann zurück; denn er ist ein Prophet. Er wird für dich eintreten, dass du am Leben bleibst. Gibst du sie aber nicht zurück, dann sollst du wissen: Du musst sterben, du und alles, was dir gehört.	7 Now then restore the man's wife; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you, and you shall live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you, and all that are yours."
8 Am Morgen stand Abimelech auf, ließ alle seine Untergebenen rufen und erzählte ihnen alles, was vorgefallen war. Da gerieten die Männer in große Furcht.	8 So Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told them all these things; and the men were very much afraid.
9 Nun ließ Abimelech Abraham rufen und stellte ihn zur Rede: Was hast du uns angetan? Womit habe ich denn gegen dich gefehlt, dass du über mich und mein Reich eine so große Sünde bringst? Du hast mir etwas angetan, was man nicht tun darf.	9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him, "What have you done to us? And how have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and my kingdom a great sin? You have done to me things that ought not to be done."
10 Und Abimelech fragte Abraham: Was hattest du vor, als du das tatest?	10 And Abimelech said to Abraham, "What were you thinking of, that you did this thing?"
11 Abraham entgegnete: Ich sagte mir: Vielleicht gibt es keine Gottesfurcht an diesem Ort und man wird mich wegen meiner Frau umbringen.	11 Abraham said, "I did it because I thought, There is no fear of God at all in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.
12 Übrigens ist sie wirklich meine Schwester, eine Tochter meines Vaters, nur nicht eine Tochter meiner Mutter; so konnte sie meine Frau werden.	12 Besides she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.
13 Als mich aber Gott aus dem Haus meines Vaters ins Ungewisse ziehen hieß, schlug ich ihr vor: Tu mir den Gefallen und sag von mir überall, wohin wir kommen: Er ist mein Bruder.	13 And when God caused me to wander from my father's house, I said to her, 'This is the kindness you must do me: at every place to which we come, say of me, He is my brother.'"
14 Darauf nahm Abimelech Schafe, Ziegen und Rinder, Knechte und Mägde und schenkte sie Abraham. Auch gab er ihm seine Frau Sara zurück;	14 Then Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and male and female slaves, and gave them to Abraham, and restored Sarah his wife to him.
15 dabei sagte Abimelech: Hier, mein Land steht dir offen. Wo es dir beliebt, da lass dich nieder!	15 And Abimelech said, "Behold, my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you."
16 Zu Sara aber sagte er: Da, ich gebe deinem Bruder tausend Silberstücke. Das soll allen Leuten in deiner Umgebung die Augen zudecken und vor allen erfährst du Genugtuung.	16 To Sarah he said, "Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; it is your vindication in the eyes of all who are with you; and before every one you are righted."
17 Abraham trat für ihn bei Gott ein; da heilte Gott Abimelech, auch seine Frau und seine Dienerinnen, sodass sie wieder gebären konnten.	17 Then Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech, and also healed his wife and female slaves so that they bore children.
18 Denn der Herr hatte im Haus Abimelech jeden Mutterschoß verschlossen wegen Sara, der Frau Abrahams.	18 For the LORD had closed all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.
