Then came to him from Jerusalem scribes and Pharisees, saying:1 Então aproximaram-se dele uns escribas e fariseus de Jerusalém, dizendo:
Why do thy disciples trangress the tradition of the ancients? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread.2 "Porque violam os teus discípulos a tradição dos antigos? Pois não lavam as mãos quando comem pão."
But he answering, said to them: Why do you also transgress the commandment of God for your tradition? For God said:3 Ele respondeu-lhes: "E vós também porque transgredia o mandamento de Deus por causa da vossa tradição? Porque Deus disse:
Honour thy father and mother: And: He that shall curse father or mother, let him die the death.4 Honra teu pai e tua mãe (Ex. 20, 12; Dt. 5, 16), e: O que amaldiçoar seu pai ou sua mãe, seja punido de morte (Ex. 21, 17).
But you say: Whosoever shall say to father or mother, The gift whatsoever proceedeth from me, shall profit thee.5 Porém, vós dizeis: Qualquer que disser a seu pai ou a sua mãe: É oferta a Deus qualquer coisa minha que te possa ser útil,
And he shall not honour his father or his mother: and you have made void the commandment of God for your tradition.6 não está mais obrigado a honrar seu pai ou sua mãe; e, assim, por causa da vossa tradição, tornastes nulo o mandamento de Deus.
Hypocrites, well hath Isaias prophesied of you, saying:7 Hipócritas, bem profetizou de vós Isaías, dizendo (Is. 29, 13):
This people honoureth me with their lips: but their heart is far from me.8 Este povo honra-me com os lábios, mas o seu coração está longe de mim.
And in vain do they worship me, teaching doctrines and commandments of men.9 Em vão me prestam culto; as doutrinas que ensinam são preceitos humanos."
And having called together the multitudes unto him, he said to them: Hear ye and understand.10 Depois, chamando a si as turbas, disse-Ihes: "Ouvi e entendei.
Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man: but what cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.11 Não é aquilo que entra pela boca, que mancha o homem, mas aquilo que sai da boca, isso é que torna imundo o homem."
Then came his disciples, and said to him: Dost thou know that the Pharisees, when they heard this word, were scandalized?12 Então, aproximando-se dele os seus discípulos, disseram-lhe: "Sabes que os fariseus, ouvindo estas palavras, se escandalizaram?"
But he answering them, said: Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.13 Jesus respondeu: "Toda a planta que meu Pai celestial não plantou, será arrancada pela raiz.
Let them alone: they are blind, and leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into the pit.14 Deixai-os; são cegos, e guias de cegos; e, se um cego guia outro cego, ambos caem na fossa."
And Peter answering, said to him: Expound to us this parable.15 Pedro, tomando a palavra, disse-lhe: "Explica-nos essa parábola."
But he said: Are you also yet without understanding?16 Jesus respondeu: "Também vós tendes tão pouca compreensão?
Do you not understand, that whatsoever entereth into the mouth, goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the privy?17 Não compreendeis que tudo o que entra pela boca passa ao ventre, e se lança depois num lugar escuso?
But the things which proceed out of the mouth, come forth from the heart, and those things defile a man.18 Mas as coisas que saem da boca, vêm do coração, e estas são as que mancham o homem;
For from the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies.19 porque do coração saem os maus pensamentos, os homicídios, os adultérios, as fornicações, os furtos, os falsos testemunhos, as palavras injuriosas.
These are the things that defile a man. But to eat with unwashed hands doth not defile a man.20 Estas coisas são as que mancham o homem. O comer, porém, com as mãos por lavar não mancha o homem."
And Jesus went from thence, and retired into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.21 Partindo dali, retirou-se Jesus para a região de Tiro e de Sidónia.
And behold a woman of Canaan who came out of those coasts, crying out, said to him: Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David: my daughter is grieviously troubled by the devil.22 E eis que uma Cananeia, que tinha saído daqueles arredores, gritou: "Senhor, Filho de David, tem piedade de mim! Minha filha está miseravelmente atormentada do demônio."
Who answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying: Send her away, for she crieth after us:23 Ele, porém, não lhe respondeu palavra. Aproximando-se seus discípulos, pediram-lhe: "Despede-; porque vem gritando atrás de nós."
And he answering, said: I was not sent but to the sheep that are lost of the house of Israel.24 Ele respondeu: "Eu não fui enviado senão às ovelhas desgarradas da casa de Israel."
But she came and adored him, saying: Lord, help me.25 Ela, porém, veio, prostrou-se diante dele, dizendo: "Senhor, valei-me."
Who answering, said: It is not good to take the bread of the children, and to cast it to the dogs.26 Ele respondeu: "Não é bom tomar o pão dos filhos e lançá-lo aos cães."
But she said: Yea, Lord; for the whelps also eat of the crumbs that fall from the table of their masters.27 Ela replicou: "Assim é. Senhor, mas também os cachorrinhos comem das migalhas que caem da mesa dos seus donos."
Then Jesus answering, said to her: O woman, great is thy faith: be it done to thee as thou wilt: and her daughter was cured from that hour.28 Então Jesus disse-lhe: "Ó mulher, grande é a tua fé! Seja-te feito como queres." E, desde aquela hora, ficou sã a sua filha.
And when Jesus had passed away from thence, he came nigh the sea of Galilee. And going up into a mountain, he sat there.29 Tendo Jesus saído dali, dirigiu-se para o mar da Galileia; e, subindo a um monte, sentou-se aí.
And there came to him great multitudes, having with them the dumb, the blind, the lame, the maimed, and many others: and they cast them down at his feet, and he healed them:30 E concorreu a ele uma grande multidão de povo, que trazia consigo coxos, cegos, mudos, estropiados e muitos outros. Lançaram-nos a seus pés, e ele os curou;
So that the multitudes marvelled seeing the dumb speak, the lame walk, and the blind see: and they glorified the God of Israel.31 de sorte que as turbas se admiravam, vendo falar os mudos, andar os coxos, ver os cegos; e davam glória ao Deus de Israel.
And Jesus called together his disciples, and said: I have compassion on the multitudes, because they continue with me now three days, and have not what to eat, and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.32 Jesus, chamando os seus discípulos, disse: "Tenho piedade deste povo, porque há jã três dias que não se afastam de mim, e não têm que comer. Não quero despedi-los em jejum, para que não desfaleçam no caminho."
And the disciples say unto him: Whence then should we have so many loaves in the desert, as to fill so great a multitude?33 Os discípulos disseram-lhe: "Onde poderemos encontrar neste deserto pães bastantes para matar a fome a tão grande multidão?"
And Jesus said to them: How many loaves have you? But they said: Seven, and a few little fishes.34 Jesus disse-lhes: "Quantos pães tendes vós?" Eles responderam: "Sete e uns poucos de peixinhos."
And he commanded the multitude to sit down upon the ground.35 Ordenou então ao povo que se sentasse sobre a terra.
And taking the seven loaves and the fishes, and giving thanks, he brake, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the people.36 E, tomando os sete pães e os peixes, deu graças, partiu-os, deu-os aos seus discípulos, e os discípulos os deram ao povo.
And they did all eat, and had their fill. And they took up seven baskets full, of what remained of the fragments.37 Comeram todos, e saciaram-se. E dos bocados que sobejaram levantaram sete cestos cheios.
And they that did eat, were four thousand men, beside children and women.38 Os que tinham comido eram quatro mil homens, sem contar mulheres e crianças.
And having dismissed the multitude, he went up into a boat, and came into the coasts of Magedan.39 Em seguida, despedindo o povo, entrou Jesus numa barca, e foi para o território de Magadan.
