1 Then Eliphaz the Themanite answered, and said:	1 Élifaz de Téman prit alors la parole:
2 If we begin to speak to thee, perhaps thou wilt take it ill, but who can withhold the words he hath conceived?	2 Si nous tentons de te parler, voudras-tu? Mais qui pourrait se taire?
3 Behold thou hast taught many, and thou hast strengthened the weary hands:	3 Vois, tu as prêché à bien des gens, tu rendais la force à celui qui abandonne,
4 Thy words have confirmed them that were staggering, and thou hast strengthened the trembling knees:	4 tes mots remettaient sur pied celui qui trébuche, tu affermissais les genoux qui fléchissent.
5 But now the scourge is come upon thee, and thou faintest: it hath touched thee, and thou art troubled.	5 Et puis, quand vient ton tour, tu faiblis, lorsque c’est toi qui es frappé, tu t’effondres!
6 Where is thy fear, thy fortitude, thy patience, and the perfection of thy ways?	6 Ne dois-tu pas compter sur ton respect du droit, ta vie parfaite n’est-elle pas ta raison d’espérer?
7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished being innocent? or when were the just destroyed?	7 Rappelle-toi: quand donc un innocent a-t-il péri? Où a-t-on vu des hommes droits disparaître?
8 On the contrary I have seen those who work iniquity, and sow sorrows, and reap them,	8 J’ai observé ceux qui font le mal: ceux qui sèment le mal sont ceux qui le récoltent.
9 Perishing by the blast of God, and consumed by the spirit of his wrath.	9 Le souffle de Dieu les balaie, le vent de sa colère les anéantit.
10 The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the lioness, and the teeth of the whelps of lions are broken:	10 Le lion rugit, le léopard donne de la voix, mais au fauve on lui brise les dents.
11 The tiger hath perished for want of prey, and the young lions are scattered abroad.	11 Le lion périt faute de proie, et les petits de la lionne vont à l’aventure.
12 Now there was a word spoken to me in private, and my ears by stealth as it were received the veins of its whisper.	12 Une révélation secrète est venue jusqu’à moi, mon oreille a perçu son écho furtif.
13 In the horror of a vision by night, when deep sleep is wont to hold men,	13 Au milieu de fantasmes entrevus dans la nuit à l’heure où le sommeil s’empare des humains,
14 Fear seized upon me, and trembling, and all my bones were affrighted:	14 je fus pris de frayeur jusqu’à en trembler: tous mes os en ont été secoués.
15 And when a spirit passed before me, the hair of my flesh stood up.	15 Un souffle alors passa sur mon visage, qui fit se hérisser tous les poils de mon corps.
16 There stood one whose countenance I knew not, an image before my eyes, and I heard the voice as it were of a gentle wind:	16 Quelqu’un était là, je n’ai rien reconnu; c’était une forme devant mes yeux. Un silence, puis j’entends une voix:
17 Shall man be justified in comparison of God, or shall a man be more pure than his maker?	17 “Un humain sera-t-il juste devant Dieu? quel homme sera pur pour Celui qui l’a fait?
18 Behold they that serve him are not steadfast, and in his angels he found wickedness:	18 Si Dieu ne se fie pas à ses serviteurs, et même dans ses anges trouve l’erreur,
19 How much more shall they that dwell in houses of clay, who have an earthly foundation, be consumed as with the moth?	19 que dire de ceux qui vivent en demeures d’argile, dont les bases même ne sont que poussière et qu’on écrase tout net, comme un insecte?
20 From morning till evening they shall be cut down: and because no one understandeth, they shall perish for ever.	20 Entre matin et soir on les a détruits, sans crier gare, ils disparaissent à jamais.
21 And they that shall be left, shall be taken away from them: they shall die, and not in wisdom.	21 On leur a dépiqué leur tente, et ils sont morts avant d’avoir compris.”
