1 QUESTE ancora son sentenze di Salomone, le quali gli uomini di Ezechia, re di Giuda, raccolsero	1 These also are proverbs of Solomon. The men of Hezekiah, king of Judah, transmitted them.
2 La gloria di Dio è di celar la cosa; Ma la gloria dei re è d’investigare la cosa.	2 God has glory in what he conceals, kings have glory in what they fathom.
3 L’altezza del cielo, e la profondità della terra, E il cuor dei re, non si possono investigare	3 As the heavens in height, and the earth in depth, the heart of kings is unfathomable.
4 Togli le schiume dell’argento, E ne riuscirà un vaso all’orafo.	4 Remove the dross from silver, and it comes forth perfectly purified;
5 Rimuovi l’empio d’innanzi al re, E il trono di esso sarà stabilito con giustizia	5 Remove the wicked from the presence of the king, and his throne is made firm through righteousness.
6 Non fare il vanaglorioso in presenza del re, E non istar nel luogo de’ grandi;	6 Claim no honor in the king's presence, nor occupy the place of great men;
7 Perciocchè val maglio che ti si dica: Sali qua; Che se tu fossi abbassato davanti al principe, Che gli occhi tuoi hanno veduto	7 For it is better that you be told, "Come up closer!" than that you be humbled before the prince.
8 Non uscir subitamente alla contesa; Che talora alla fin d’essa tu non faccia qualche cosa, Quando il tuo prossimo ti avrà fatta vergogna.	8 What your eyes have seen bring not forth hastily against an opponent; For what will you do later on when your neighbor puts you to shame?
9 Dibatti la tua lite col tuo prossimo; Ma non palesare il segreto di un altro;	9 Discuss your case with your neighbor, but another man's secret do not disclose;
10 Che talora chi ti ode non ti vituperi, E che la tua infamia non possa essere riparata	10 Lest, hearing it, he reproach you, and your ill repute cease not.
11 La parola detta in modi convenevoli È simile a pomi d’oro tra figure d’argento.	11 Like golden apples in silver settings are words spoken at the proper time.
12 Il savio riprenditore ad un orecchio ubbidiente È un monile d’oro, ed un ornamento d’oro finissimo	12 Like a golden earring, or a necklace of fine gold, is a wise reprover to an obedient ear.
13 Il messo fedele è, a quelli che lo mandano, Come il fresco della neve in giorno di ricolta; E ristora l’anima de’ suoi padroni	13 Like the coolness of snow in the heat of the harvest is a faithful messenger for the one who sends him. (He refreshes the soul of his master.)
14 L’uomo che si gloria falsamente di liberalità È simile alle nuvole, ed al vento senza pioggia	14 Like clouds and wind when no rain follows is the man who boastfully promises what he never gives.
15 Il principe si piega con sofferenza, E la lingua dolce rompe le ossa	15 By patience is a ruler persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone.
16 Se tu trovi del miele, mangiane quanto ti basta; Che talora, se tu te ne satolli, tu nol vomiti fuori	16 If you find honey, eat only what you need, lest you become glutted with it and vomit it up.
17 Metti di rado il piè in casa del tuo prossimo; Che talora egli non si sazii di te, e ti odii	17 Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor's house, lest he have more than enough of you, and hate you.
18 Un uomo che dice falsa testimonianza contro al suo prossimo È come un martello, una spada, ed una saetta acuta	18 Like a club, or a sword, or a sharp arrow, is the man who bears false witness against his neighbor.
19 La confidanza che si pone nel disleale è, in giorno di afflizione, Un dente rotto, ed un piè dislogato	19 Like an infected tooth or an unsteady foot is (dependence on) a faithless man in time of trouble.
20 Chi canta canzoni presso di un cuor dolente È come chi si toglie la vesta d’addosso in giorno di freddo, E come l’aceto sopra il nitro	20 Like a moth in clothing, or a maggot in wood, sorrow gnaws at the human heart.
21 Se colui che ti odia ha fame, dagli da mangiar del pane; E se ha sete, dagli da bere dell’acqua;	21 If your enemy be hungry, give him food to eat, if he be thirsty, give him to drink;
22 Perciocchè così tu gli metterai delle brace in su la testa; E il Signore te ne farà la retribuzione	22 For live coals you will heap on his head, and the LORD will vindicate you.
23 Il vento settentrionale dissipa la pioggia; E il viso sdegnoso la lingua che sparla di nascosto	23 The north wind brings rain, and a backbiting tongue an angry countenance.
24 Meglio vale abitare sopra il canto di un tetto, Che con una moglie rissosa in casa comune	24 It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop than in a roomy house with a quarrelsome woman.
25 Una buona novella di lontan paese È come acqua fresca alla persona stanca ed assetata	25 Like cool water to one faint from thirst is good news from a far country.
26 Il giusto che vacilla davanti all’empio, È una fonte calpestata, ed una vena d’acque guasta	26 Like a troubled fountain or a polluted spring is a just man who gives way before the wicked.
27 Il mangiar troppo miele non è bene, E l’investigar colui che è la gloria degli uomini è cosa gloriosa	27 To eat too much honey is not good; nor to seek honor after honor.
28 L’uomo, il cui animo non ha ritegno alcuno, È una città sfasciata, senza mura	28 Like an open city with no defenses is the man with no check on his feelings.
