| 1 Los israelitas hicieron lo que es malo a los ojos del Señor, y él los entregó en manos de Madián durante siete años. | 1 The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD gave them into the hand of Midian seven years. |
| 2 Los madianitas oprimieron a Israel, y para librarse de ellos, los israelitas se hicieron escondites en las cuevas de las montañas, en las cavernas y en los lugares escarpados. | 2 And the hand of Midian prevailed over Israel; and because of Midian the people of Israel made for themselves the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves and the strongholds. |
| 3 Cada vez que Israel sembraba, venían los madianitas, los amalecitas y los Orientales, y los invadían. | 3 For whenever the Israelites put in seed the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East would come up and attack them; |
| 4 Acampaban frente a ellos y destruían los productos del suelo hasta los confines de Gaza. No dejaban víveres, ovejas, bueyes ni asnos en Israel, | 4 they would encamp against them and destroy the produce of the land, as far as the neighborhood of Gaza, and leave no sustenance in Israel, and no sheep or ox or ass. |
| 5 porque subían con su ganado y sus tiendas de campaña, y eran numerosos como langostas. Tanto ellos como sus camellos eran incontables, y entraban en el país para devastarlo. | 5 For they would come up with their cattle and their tents, coming like locusts for number; both they and their camels could not be counted; so that they wasted the land as they came in. |
| 6 Israel quedó muy debilitado a causa de Madián, y los israelitas clamaron al Señor. | 6 And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the people of Israel cried for help to the LORD. |
| 7 Cuando los israelitas clamaron al Señor a causa de Madián, | 7 When the people of Israel cried to the LORD on account of the Midianites, |
| 8 el Señor les envió un profeta, que les habló en estos términos: «Así habla el Señor, el Dios de Israel: Yo los hice subir de Egipto y los saqué de un lugar de esclavitud; | 8 the LORD sent a prophet to the people of Israel; and he said to them, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: I led you up from Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage; |
| 9 los libré del poder de los egipcios y de las manos de sus opresores. Los expulsé a ellos para entregarles a ustedes su territorio. | 9 and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians, and from the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out before you, and gave you their land; |
| 10 Y también les dije: «Yo soy el Señor, su Dios. No adoren a los dioses de los amorreos, en cuyo territorio habitan». Pero ustedes no escucharon mi voz». | 10 and I said to you, 'I am the LORD your God; you shall not pay reverence to the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.' But you have not given heed to my voice." |
| 11 El Angel del Señor fue a sentarse bajo la encina de Ofrá, que pertenecía a Joás de Abiézer. Su hijo Gedeón estaba moliendo trigo en el lagar, para ocultárselo a los madianitas. | 11 Now the angel of the LORD came and sat under the oak at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, as his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites. |
| 12 El Angel del Señor se le apareció y le dijo: «El Señor está contigo, valiente guerrero». | 12 And the angel of the LORD appeared to him and said to him, "The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valor." |
| 13 «Perdón, señor, le respondió Gedeón; pero si el Señor está con nosotros, ¿por qué nos sucede todo esto? ¿Dónde están todas esas maravillas que nos contaron nuestros padres, cuando nos decían: «El Señor nos hizo subir de Egipto?» Pero ahora él nos ha desamparado y nos ha entregado en manos de Madián». | 13 And Gideon said to him, "Pray, sir, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this befallen us? And where are all his wonderful deeds which our fathers recounted to us, saying, 'Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt?' But now the LORD has cast us off, and given us into the hand of Midian." |
| 14 El Señor se volvió hacia él y le dijo: «Ve, y con tu fuerza salvarás a Israel del poder de los Madianitas. Soy yo el que te envío». | 14 And the LORD turned to him and said, "Go in this might of yours and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?" |
| 15 Gedeón le respondió: «Perdón, Señor, pero ¿cómo voy a salvar yo a Israel, si mi clan es el más humildes de Manasés y yo soy el más joven en la casa de mi padre?». | 15 And he said to him, "Pray, Lord, how can I deliver Israel? Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family." |
| 16 «Yo estaré contigo, le dijo el Señor, y tú derrotarás a Madián como si fuera un solo hombre». | 16 And the LORD said to him, "But I will be with you, and you shall smite the Midianites as one man." |
| 17 Entonces Gedeón respondió: «Señor, se he alcanzado tu favor, dame una señal de que eres realmente tú el que está hablando conmigo. | 17 And he said to him, "If now I have found favor with thee, then show me a sign that it is thou who speakest with me. |
| 18 Te ruego que no te muevas de aquí hasta que yo regrese. En seguida traeré mi ofrenda y la pondré delante de ti». El Señor le respondió: «Me quedaré hasta que vuelvas». | 18 Do not depart from here, I pray thee, until I come to thee, and bring out my present, and set it before thee." And he said, "I will stay till you return." |
| 19 Gedeón fue a cocinar un cabrito y preparó unos panes sin levadura con una medida de harina. Luego puso la carne en una canasta y el caldo en una olla; los llevó debajo de la encina y se los presentó. | 19 So Gideon went into his house and prepared a kid, and unleavened cakes from an ephah of flour; the meat he put in a basket, and the broth he put in a pot, and brought them to him under the oak and presented them. |
| 20 El Angel del Señor le dijo: «Toma la carne y los panes ácimos, deposítalos sobre esta roca y derrama sobre ellos el caldo». Así lo hizo Gedeón. | 20 And the angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and put them on this rock, and pour the broth over them." And he did so. |
| 21 Entonces el Angel del Señor tocó la carne y los panes ácimos con la punta del bastón que llevaba en la mano, y salió de la roca un fuego que los consumió. En seguida el Angel del Señor desapareció de su vista. | 21 Then the angel of the LORD reached out the tip of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes; and there sprang up fire from the rock and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of the LORD vanished from his sight. |
| 22 Gedeón reconoció entonces que era el Angel del Señor, y exclamó: ¡Ay de mí, Señor, porque he visto cara a cara al Angel del Señor!». | 22 Then Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the LORD; and Gideon said, "Alas, O Lord GOD! For now I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face." |
| 23 Pero el Señor le respondió: «Quédate en paz. No temas, no morirás». | 23 But the LORD said to him, "Peace be to you; do not fear, you shall not die." |
| 24 Gedeón erigió allí un altar al Señor y lo llamó: «El Señor es la paz». Todavía hoy se encuentra ese altar en Ofrá de Abiézer. | 24 Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it, The LORD is peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites. |
| 25 Aquella misma noche, el Señor dijo a Gedeón: «Toma el novillo de tu padre y otro toro de siete años. Luego destruirás el altar del Baal que pertenece a tu padre y cortarás el poste sagrado que está junto a él. | 25 That night the LORD said to him, "Take your father's bull, the second bull seven years old, and pull down the altar of Baal which your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it; |
| 26 Después edificarás al Señor, tu Dios, en la cima de esta altura escarpada, un altar muy bien construido. Entonces tomarás el otro toro y lo ofrecerás en holocausto, con la leña del poste sagrado». | 26 and build an altar to the LORD your God on the top of the stronghold here, with stones laid in due order; then take the second bull, and offer it as a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down." |
| 27 Gedeón reunió a diez de sus servidores e hizo lo que el Señor le había dicho. Pero por temor a su familia y a la gente de la ciudad, en lugar de hacerlo de día, lo hizo durante la noche. | 27 So Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the LORD had told him; but because he was too afraid of his family and the men of the town to do it by day, he did it by night. |
| 28 A la mañana siguiente, toda la gente vio que el altar del Baal estaba destruido y que habían cortado el poste sagrado que estaba junto a él. Vieron también que un novillo había sido ofrecido en holocausto sobre el altar que acababa de ser edificado. | 28 When the men of the town rose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered upon the altar which had been built. |
| 29 Entonces se preguntaron: «¿Quién habrá hecho esto?». Después de averiguarlo, supieron que había sido Gedeón, el hijo de Joás. | 29 And they said to one another, "Who has done this thing?" And after they had made search and inquired, they said, "Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing." |
| 30 En seguida dijeron a Joás: «Trae aquí a tu hijo. ¡El debe morir, porque ha derribado el altar del Baal y ha cortado el poste sagrado que estaba junto a él!». | 30 Then the men of the town said to Joash, "Bring out your son, that he may die, for he has pulled down the altar of Baal and cut down the Asherah beside it." |
| 31 Pero Joás respondió a los que estaban delante de él: «¿Acaso a ustedes les corresponde defender al Baal? ¿Son ustedes los que tienen que salvarlo? Si Baal es Dios, que se defienda solo, ya que Gedeón derribó su altar. El que pretenda defenderlo, morirá antes del amanecer». | 31 But Joash said to all who were arrayed against him, "Will you contend for Baal? Or will you defend his cause? Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because his altar has been pulled down." |
| 32 Por eso, a partir de ese momento, Gedeón se llamó Ierubaal, porque decían» «¡Que Baal se defienda de él, ya que él derribó su altar!». | 32 Therefore on that day he was called Jerubbaal, that is to say, "Let Baal contend against him," because he pulled down his altar. |
| 33 Todo Madián, Amalec y los Orientales se reunieron de común acuerdo, cruzaron el Jordán y acamparon en la llanura de Izreel. | 33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the East came together, and crossing the Jordan they encamped in the Valley of Jezreel. |
| 34 Entonces el espíritu del Señor descendió sobre Gedeón: el tocó la trompeta, y los de Abiézer se reunieron detrás de él. | 34 But the Spirit of the LORD took possession of Gideon; and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him. |
| 35 Envió mensajeros por todo el territorio de Manasés, y ellos también se le unieron. Lo mismo hizo en Aser, en Zabulón y en Neftalí, y todos ellos acudieron al encuentro. | 35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they too were called out to follow him. And he sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali; and they went up to meet them. |
| 36 Gedeón dijo a Dios: «Si realmente vas a salvar a Israel por mi intermedio, como lo has prometido, concédeme esto: | 36 Then Gideon said to God, "If thou wilt deliver Israel by my hand, as thou hast said, |
| 37 Yo voy a tender un vellón de lana sobre la era; si cae rocío solamente sobre el vellón, y todo el resto queda seco, sabré que tú salvarás a Israel por mi intermedio, como lo has dicho». | 37 behold, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that thou wilt deliver Israel by my hand, as thou hast said." |
| 38 Así sucedió: Gedeón se levantó de madrugada, exprimió el vellón para sacarle el rocío y llenó con él una copa de agua. | 38 And it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water. |
| 39 Después le dijo a Dios: «No te enojes conmigo si me atrevo a hablarte nuevamente. Quisiera hacer otra prueba con el vellón: Que sólo el vellón quede seco y todo el suelo se cubra de rocío». | 39 Then Gideon said to God, "Let not thy anger burn against me, let me speak but this once; pray, let me make trial only this once with the fleece; pray, let it be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew." |
| 40 Así lo hizo Dios aquella noche: sólo el vellón quedó seco, mientras que el suelo estaba cubierto de rocío. | 40 And God did so that night; for it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew. |
