EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 El que cree que Jesús es el Cristo ha nacido de Dios; y el que ama al Padre ama también al que ha nacido de él,	1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is begotten by God, and everyone who loves the father loves (also) the one begotten by him.
2 La señal de que amamos a los hijos de Dios es que amamos a Dios y cumplimos sus mandamientos.	2 In this way we know that we love the children of God when we love God and obey his commandments.
3 El amor a Dios consiste en cumplir sus mandamientos, y sus mandamientos no son una carga,	3 For the love of God is this, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome,
4 porque el que ha nacido de Dios, vence al mundo. Y la victoria que triunfa sobre el mundo es nuestra fe.	4 for whoever is begotten by God conquers the world. And the victory that conquers the world is our faith.
5 ¿Quién es el que vence al mundo, sino el que cree que Jesús es el Hijo de Dios?	5 Who (indeed) is the victor over the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
6 Jesucristo vino por el agua y por la sangre; no solamente con el agua, sino con el agua y con la sangre. Y el Espíritu es la verdad.	6 This is the one who came through water and blood, Jesus Christ, not by water alone, but by water and blood. The Spirit is the one that testifies, and the Spirit is truth.
7 Son tres los que dan testimonio:	7 So there are three that testify,
8 el Espíritu, el agua y la sangre; y los tres están de acuerdo.	8 the Spirit, the water, and the blood, and the three are of one accord.
9 Si damos fe al testimonio de los hombres, con mayor razón tenemos que aceptar el testimonio de Dios. Y Dios ha dado testimonio de su Hijo.	9 If we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is surely greater. Now the testimony of God is this, that he has testified on behalf of his Son.
10 El que cree en el Hijo de Dios tiene en su corazón el testimonio de Dios. El que no cree a Dios lo hace pasar por mentiroso, porque no cree en el testimonio que Dios ha dado acerca de su Hijo.	10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar by not believing the testimony God has given about his Son.
11 Y el testimonio es este: Dios nos dio la Vida eterna, y esa Vida está en su Hijo.	11 And this is the testimony: God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
12 El que está unido al Hijo, tiene la Vida; el que no lo está, no tiene la Vida.	12 Whoever possesses the Son has life; whoever does not possess the Son of God does not have life.
13 Les he escrito estas cosas, a ustedes que creen en el nombre del Hijo de Dios, para que sepan que tienen la Vida eterna.	13 I write these things to you so that you may know that you have eternal life, you who believe in the name of the Son of God.
14 Tenemos plena confianza de que Dios nos escucha si le pedimos algo conforme a su voluntad.	14 And we have this confidence in him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
15 Y sabiendo que él nos escucha en todo lo que le pedimos, sabemos que ya poseemos lo que le hemos pedido.	15 And if we know that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, we know that what we have asked him for is ours.
16 El que ve a su hermano cometer un pecado que no lleva a la muerte, que ore y le dará la Vida. Me refiero a los que cometen pecados que no conducen a la muerte, porque hay un pecado que lleva a la muerte; por este no les pido que oren.	16 If anyone sees his brother sinning, if the sin is not deadly, he should pray to God and he will give him life. This is only for those whose sin is not deadly. There is such a thing as deadly sin, about which I do not say that you should pray.
17 Aunque toda maldad es pecado, no todo pecado lleva a la muerte.	17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly.
18 Sabemos que el que ha nacido de Dios no peca, sino que el Hijo de Dios lo protege, y el Maligno no le puede hacer nada.	18 We know that no one begotten by God sins; but the one begotten by God he protects, and the evil one cannot touch him.
19 Sabemos que somos de Dios, y que el mundo entero está bajo el poder del Maligno.	19 We know that we belong to God, and the whole world is under the power of the evil one.
20 Y sabemos también que el Hijo de Dios ha venido y nos ha dado inteligencia para que conozcamos al que es Verdadero; y nosotros permanecemos en el que es Verdadero, en su Hijo Jesucristo. El es el Dios verdadero y la Vida eterna.	20 We also know that the Son of God has come and has given us discernment to know the one who is true. And we are in the one who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
21 Hijitos míos, cuídense de los ídolos...	21 Children, be on your guard against idols.
