| 1 Al enterarse de esto, todos los reyes que estaban de este lado del Jordán, en la Montaña, en la Sefelá, en toda la costa del gran Mar, hasta la región del Líbano –hititas, amorreos, cananeos, perizitas, jivitas y jebuseos– | 1 When all the kings who were beyond the Jordan in the hill country and in the lowland all along the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, heard of this, |
| 2 se aliaron para combatir de común acuerdo contra Josué y contra Israel. | 2 they gathered together with one accord to fight Joshua and Israel. |
| 3 También los habitantes de Gabaón se enteraron de lo que había hecho Josué con Jericó y con Ai, | 3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai, |
| 4 y entonces decidieron recurrir a la astucia. Reunieron provisiones para el viaje, tomaron alforjas viejas para sus asnos y unos odres viejos, rotos y vueltos a coser; | 4 they on their part acted with cunning, and went and made ready provisions, and took worn-out sacks upon their asses, and wineskins, worn-out and torn and mended, |
| 5 se calzaron sandalias viejas y remendadas, y se vistieron con ropa gastada. Todo el pan que llevaban como alimento estaba reseco y reducido a migajas. | 5 with worn-out, patched sandals on their feet, and worn-out clothes; and all their provisions were dry and moldy. |
| 6 Así fueron hasta el campamento de Josué, en Guilgal, y le dijeron, a él y a los hombres de Israel: «Venimos de un país lejano; por eso, hagan una alianza con nosotros». | 6 And they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, "We have come from a far country; so now make a covenant with us." |
| 7 Pero los hombres de Israel respondieron a aquellos jivitas: «Tal vez ustedes habitan por aquí, entre nosotros. ¿Cómo vamos a hacer una alianza con ustedes?». | 7 But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, "Perhaps you live among us; then how can we make a covenant with you?" |
| 8 Ellos dijeron a Josué: «Nosotros somos tus servidores». «¿Quiénes son ustedes?, les preguntó Josué, ¿de dónde vienen? | 8 They said to Joshua, "We are your servants." And Joshua said to them, "Who are you? And where do you come from?" |
| 9 Ellos le respondieron: «Nosotros, tus servidores, venimos de un país muy lejano, atraídos por el renombre del Señor, tu Dios. Porque hemos oído hablar de él, de todo lo que hizo en Egipto, | 9 They said to him, "From a very far country your servants have come, because of the name of the LORD your God; for we have heard a report of him, and all that he did in Egypt, |
| 10 y de la manera que trató a los dos reyes amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán: a Sijón, el rey de Jesbón, y a Og, el rey de Basán que residía en Astarot. | 10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth. |
| 11 Por eso nuestros ancianos y todos los habitantes de nuestro país nos dijeron: «Provéanse de víveres para el camino, vayan a su encuentro y díganles: somos sus servidores, hagan por lo tanto una alianza con nosotros». | 11 And our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, 'Take provisions in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and say to them, "We are your servants; come now, make a covenant with us."' |
| 12 Este es nuestro pan: todavía estaba caliente cuando nos proveímos de él en nuestras casas, el día en que salimos al encuentro de ustedes; ahora está reseco y convertido en migajas. | 12 Here is our bread; it was still warm when we took it from our houses as our food for the journey, on the day we set forth to come to you, but now, behold, it is dry and moldy; |
| 13 Estos son los odres de vino: eran nuevos cuando los llenamos, y ahora están aquí, todos rotos. Y estas son nuestra ropa y nuestras sandalias, gastadas por un viaje excesivamente largo». | 13 these wineskins were new when we filled them, and behold, they are burst; and these garments and shoes of ours are worn out from the very long journey." |
| 14 Entonces los israelitas comieron de sus provisiones sin consultar la decisión del Señor. | 14 So the men partook of their provisions, and did not ask direction from the LORD. |
| 15 Josué hizo las paces con ellos y también el pacto de conservarles la vida; los jefes de la comunidad, por su parte, les hicieron un juramento. | 15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the leaders of the congregation swore to them. |
| 16 Pero tres días después de haber concluido este pacto, los israelitas se enteraron de que aquellos hombres eran de un pueblo vecino y que vivían en las inmediaciones. | 16 At the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they dwelt among them. |
| 17 Entonces levantaron sus carpas, y en tres días llegaron a las ciudades que ellos habitaban. Estas eran Gabaón, Quefirá, Beerot y Quiriat Iearím. | 17 And the people of Israel set out and reached their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Be-eroth, and Kiriath-jearim. |
| 18 Los israelitas no los mataron, porque los jefes de la comunidad les habían hecho un juramento por el Señor, el Dios de Israel. Pero toda la comunidad murmuró contra sus jefes. | 18 But the people of Israel did not kill them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. Then all the congregation murmured against the leaders. |
| 19 Los jefes declararon a la comunidad en pleno: «Nosotros les hemos prestado un juramento por el Señor, el Dios de Israel, y ahora no podemos tocarlos. | 19 But all the leaders said to all the congregation, "We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we may not touch them. |
| 20 Haremos con ellos lo siguiente: los dejaremos vivir para no atraer sobre nosotros la ira del Señor, a causa del juramento que les hemos hecho». | 20 This we will do to them, and let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we swore to them." |
| 21 Luego los jefes les dijeron: «¡Qué vivan! Pero estarán al servicio de la comunidad como leñadores y aguateros». Y la comunidad obró de acuerdo con lo que habían dicho los jefes. | 21 And the leaders said to them, "Let them live." So they became hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the leaders had said of them. |
| 22 Josué hizo comparecer a los gabaonitas y les dijo: «¿Por qué ustedes nos han engañado asegurando que vivían muy lejos de nosotros, cuando en realidad viven aquí, en las inmediaciones? | 22 Joshua summoned them, and he said to them, "Why did you deceive us, saying, 'We are very far from you,' when you dwell among us? |
| 23 Ahora pesa sobre ustedes una maldición, y por eso nunca faltarán entre ustedes esclavos, que sirvan como leñadores y aguateros en la Casa de mi Dios». | 23 Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you shall always be slaves, hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God." |
| 24 Ellos respondieron a Josué: «Nosotros estábamos perfectamente informados de que el Señor, tu Dios, había dado a su servidor Moisés la orden de entregarles todo el país, y de exterminar a todos los habitantes que encontraran a su paso. Ante la presencia de ustedes, temimos mucho por nuestras vidas, y por eso hemos hecho esto. | 24 They answered Joshua, "Because it was told to your servants for a certainty that the LORD your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; so we feared greatly for our lives because of you, and did this thing. |
| 25 Ahora nos tienes en tus manos; trátanos como te parezca más conveniente y justo». | 25 And now, behold, we are in your hand: do as it seems good and right in your sight to do to us." |
| 26 Pero Josué los trató según lo convenido y los libró de los Israelitas, que no los mataron. | 26 So he did to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the people of Israel; and they did not kill them. |
| 27 Desde aquel día, Josué los destinó a cortar leña y a sacar agua para la comunidad y para el altar del Señor, en el lugar que el Señor eligiera. Esto es lo que hacen todavía hoy. | 27 But Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD, to continue to this day, in the place which he should choose. |
