| 1 Cuando Nicanor supo que los hombres de Judas se hallaban en las regiones de Samaría, resolvió atacarlos sin ningún riesgo el día de descanso. | 1 When Nicanor heard that Judas and his men were in the region of Samaria, he made plans to attack them with complete safety on the day of rest. |
| 2 Los judíos que iban con él por la fuerza, le dijeron: «No los mates tan despiadada y cruelmente; respeta más bien el día que ha sido santificado especialmente por Aquel que todo lo ve». | 2 And when the Jews who were compelled to follow him said, "Do not destroy so savagely and barbarously, but show respect for the day which he who sees all things has honored and hallowed above other days," |
| 3 El muy perverso preguntó si había en el cielo un Soberano que hubiera ordenado celebrar el día sábado. | 3 the thrice-accursed wretch asked if there were a sovereign in heaven who had commanded the keeping of the sabbath day. |
| 4 Ellos le respondieron: «El mismo Señor que vive en el cielo es el Soberano que ha mandado observar el séptimo día». | 4 And when they declared, "It is the living Lord himself, the Sovereign in heaven, who ordered us to observe the seventh day," |
| 5 El replicó: «También yo soy soberano en la tierra y ordeno empuñar las armas para servir al rey». Sin embargo, no llegó a realizar su funesto designio. | 5 he replied, "And I am a sovereign also, on earth, and I command you to take up arms and finish the king's business." Nevertheless, he did not succeed in carrying out his abominable design. |
| 6 Nicanor, ensoberbecido sobremanera, había decidido levantar un monumento público, con los trofeos ganados a los hombres de Judas. | 6 This Nicanor in his utter boastfulness and arrogance had determined to erect a public monument of victory over Judas and his men. |
| 7 Por el contrario, el Macabeo mantenía una confianza inalterable, esperando recibir la ayuda del Señor. | 7 But Maccabeus did not cease to trust with all confidence that he would get help from the Lord. |
| 8 El exhortaba a sus compañeros a no temer el ataque de los paganos, y a contar con la victoria que también esta vez les vendría de la mano del Todopoderoso, recordando los auxilios que antes habían recibido del Cielo. | 8 And he exhorted his men not to fear the attack of the Gentiles, but to keep in mind the former times when help had come to them from heaven, and now to look for the victory which the Almighty would give them. |
| 9 También los alentaba, por medio de la Ley y los Profetas, recordándoles los combates que habían sostenido exitosamente, y así reavivó su coraje. | 9 Encouraging them from the law and the prophets, and reminding them also of the struggles they had won, he made them the more eager. |
| 10 Y al mismo tiempo que les infundía valor, los estimulaba mostrándoles la deslealtad de los paganos y cómo violaban sus juramentos. | 10 And when he had aroused their courage, he gave his orders, at the same time pointing out the perfidy of the Gentiles and their violation of oaths. |
| 11 De esa manera, armó a cada uno de ellos, no tanto con la seguridad que dan los escudos y las lanzas, cuanto con la confianza que infunden las palabras de aliento. Además les expuso un sueño totalmente fidedigno, que los alegró a todos. | 11 He armed each of them not so much with confidence in shields and spears as with the inspiration of brave words, and he cheered them all by relating a dream, a sort of vision, which was worthy of belief. |
| 12 El había visto lo siguiente: Onías, el que había sido Sumo Sacerdotes, hombre cabal, de trato modesto, de carácter afable, de hablar mesurado, ejercitado desde niño en todas las prácticas virtuosas, oraba con los brazos extendidos por toda la comunidad de los judíos. | 12 What he saw was this: Onias, who had been high priest, a noble and good man, of modest bearing and gentle manner, one who spoke fittingly and had been trained from childhood in all that belongs to excellence, was praying with outstretched hands for the whole body of the Jews. |
| 13 Luego apareció también un personaje que se destacaba por sus cabellos blancos y su prestancia, revestido de una dignidad soberana y majestuosa. | 13 Then likewise a man appeared, distinguished by his gray hair and dignity, and of marvelous majesty and authority. |
| 14 Entonces Onías tomó la palabra y dijo: «Este es Jeremías, el profeta de Dios, que ama a sus hermanos, y ora sin cesar por su pueblo y por la Ciudad santa». | 14 And Onias spoke, saying, "This is a man who loves the brethren and prays much for the people and the holy city, Jeremiah, the prophet of God." |
| 15 Después Jeremías extendió su mano derecha y entregó a Judas una espada de oro, diciendo mientras se la daba: | 15 Jeremiah stretched out his right hand and gave to Judas a golden sword, and as he gave it he addressed him thus: |
| 16 «Recibe esta espada santa como un don de Dios: con ella destruirás a tus enemigos». | 16 "Take this holy sword, a gift from God, with which you will strike down your adversaries." |
| 17 Reconfortados con estas bellísimas palabras de Judas, capaces de llevar al heroísmo y de robustecer los corazones juveniles, todos decidieron no quedarse a la defensiva, sino lanzarse valerosamente a la ofensiva, y decidir la situación luchando con la mayor valentía, porque estaban en peligro la Ciudad, las instituciones sagradas y el Santuario. | 17 Encouraged by the words of Judas, so noble and so effective in arousing valor and awaking manliness in the souls of the young, they determined not to carry on a campaign but to attack bravely, and to decide the matter, by fighting hand to hand with all courage, because the city and the sanctuary and the temple were in danger. |
| 18 El cuidado de las mujeres y los niños, de sus hermanos y parientes, pasaba a segundo plano; lo primero y principal era el Templo consagrado. | 18 Their concern for wives and children, and also for brethren and relatives, lay upon them less heavily; their greatest and first fear was for the consecrated sanctuary. |
| 19 Y no era menor la angustia de los que habían quedado en la ciudad, preocupados como estaban por el combate que se iba a librar en campo abierto. | 19 And those who had to remain in the city were in no little distress, being anxious over the encounter in the open country. |
| 20 Todos aguardaban el desenlace inminente. Los enemigos ya se habían concentrado y el ejército se había alineado en orden de batalla; los elefantes estaban situados en lugares estratégicos y la caballería se había ubicado en los flancos. | 20 When all were now looking forward to the coming decision, and the enemy was already close at hand with their army drawn up for battle, the elephants strategically stationed and the cavalry deployed on the flanks, |
| 21 Entonces el Macabeo, al ver las tropas que tenía delante, la variedad de las armas con que estaban equipadas y la ferocidad de los elefantes, extendió las manos hacia el cielo e invocó al Señor que hace prodigios, porque sabía muy bien que no es por medio de las armas, sino de la manera como él lo decide, que otorga la victoria a los que la merecen. | 21 Maccabeus, perceiving the hosts that were before him and the varied supply of arms and the savagery of the elephants, stretched out his hands toward heaven and called upon the Lord who works wonders; for he knew that it is not by arms, but as the Lord decides, that he gains the victory for those who deserve it. |
| 22 El hizo su invocación con estas palabras: «Tú, gran Señor, enviaste a tú ángel a Ezequías, rey de Judá, y él exterminó a ciento ochenta y cinco mil hombres del ejército de Senaquerib. | 22 And he called upon him in these words: "O Lord, thou didst send thy angel in the time of Hezekiah king of Judea, and he slew fully a hundred and eighty-five thousand in the camp of Sennacherib. |
| 23 Envía también ahora, Soberano del cielo, un ángel protector delante de nosotros para sembrar el pánico y el terror. | 23 So now, O Sovereign of the heavens, send a good angel to carry terror and trembling before us. |
| 24 ¡Que por la fuerza de tu brazo queden aterrados los que avanzan blasfemando contra tu Pueblo santo!». Así terminó su oración. | 24 By the might of thy arm may these blasphemers who come against thy holy people be struck down." With these words he ended his prayer. |
| 25 Mientras las tropas de Nicanor avanzaban al son de trompetas y cantos de guerra, | 25 Nicanor and his men advanced with trumpets and battle songs; |
| 26 los hombres de Judas se enfrentaron con sus enemigos entre invocaciones y plegarias. | 26 and Judas and his men met the enemy in battle with invocation to God and prayers. |
| 27 Ellos luchaban con sus manos, y con el corazón oraban a Dios. Así abatieron a no menos de treinta y cinco mil hombres, y se regocijaron por la visible intervención de Dios. | 27 So, fighting with their hands and praying to God in their hearts, they laid low no less than thirty-five thousand men, and were greatly gladdened by God's manifestation. |
| 28 Cuando volvían gozosos del combate, reconocieron a Nicanor, tendido en tierra con su armadura. | 28 When the action was over and they were returning with joy, they recognized Nicanor, lying dead, in full armor. |
| 29 Entre gritos y clamores, bendecían al Señor en la lengua de sus padres. | 29 Then there was shouting and tumult, and they blessed the Sovereign Lord in the language of their fathers. |
| 30 Después, el que se había entregado por entero, en cuerpo y alma, combatiendo en primera línea por sus compatriotas, el que había conservado hacia ellos el afecto de su juventud, mandó cortar la cabeza y un brazo entero de Nicanor, y ordenó que los llevaran a Jerusalén. | 30 And the man who was ever in body and soul the defender of his fellow citizens, the man who maintained his youthful good will toward his countrymen, ordered them to cut off Nicanor's head and arm and carry them to Jerusalem. |
| 31 Al llegar allí, convocó a sus compatriotas y a los sacerdotes, se puso delante del altar y mandó buscar a los de la Ciudadela. | 31 And when he arrived there and had called his countrymen together and stationed the priests before the altar, he sent for those who were in the citadel. |
| 32 Entonces les mostró la cabeza del malvado Nicanor y el brazo que aquel blasfemo, en un arrebato de soberbia, había levantado contra la santa Casa del Todopoderoso. | 32 He showed them the vile Nicanor's head and that profane man's arm, which had been boastfully stretched out against the holy house of the Almighty; |
| 33 Luego mandó que la lengua del impío Nicanor fuera cortada a pedazos y arrojada a los pájaros, y que su brazo fuera colgado frente al Santuario, como pago de su insensatez. | 33 and he cut out the tongue of the ungodly Nicanor and said that he would give it piecemeal to the birds and hang up these rewards of his folly opposite the sanctuary. |
| 34 Todos elevaron sus bendiciones hacia el cielo, en honor del Señor que se les había manifestado, exclamando: «¡Bendito sea el que ha conservado sin mancha su Lugar santo!». | 34 And they all, looking to heaven, blessed the Lord who had manifested himself, saying, "Blessed is he who has kept his own place undefiled." |
| 35 Judas mandó colgar de la Ciudadela la cabeza de Nicanor, como un signo manifiesto y visible a todos de la protección del Señor. | 35 And he hung Nicanor's head from the citadel, a clear and conspicuous sign to every one of the help of the Lord. |
| 36 Todos decretaron de común acuerdo que aquel día no se dejara de conmemorar, sino que fuera celebrado el día trece del duodécimo mes –llamado Adar en arameo– víspera del día llamado de Mardoqueo. | 36 And they all decreed by public vote never to let this day go unobserved, but to celebrate the thirteenth day of the twelfth month -- which is called Adar in the Syrian language -- the day before Mordecai's day. |
| 37 Estos son los sucesos referentes a Nicanor. Como a partir de entonces la Ciudad quedó en poder de los hebreos, aquí mismo terminaré mi relato. | 37 This, then, is how matters turned out with Nicanor. And from that time the city has been in the possession of the Hebrews. So I too will here end my story. |
| 38 Si este ha sido bueno y bien logrado, no es otra cosa lo que yo pretendía. Si, por el contrario, es imperfecto y mediocre, lo cierto es que hice todo lo que pude. | 38 If it is well told and to the point, that is what I myself desired; if it is poorly done and mediocre, that was the best I could do. |
| 39 Porque así como beber solamente vino o solamente agua es perjudicial y, en cambio, el vino mezclado con agua es agradable y produce un placer especial, de la misma manera la disposición armoniosa del relato agrada a los oídos de los que leen la obra. Y con esto, llegamos al fin. | 39 For just as it is harmful to drink wine alone, or, again, to drink water alone, while wine mixed with water is sweet and delicious and enhances one's enjoyment, so also the style of the story delights the ears of those who read the work. And here will be the end. |
