| 1 La mujer de uno de la comunidad de profetas imploró a Eliseo, diciendo: «Tu servidor, mi marido, ha muerto, y tú sabes que era un hombre temeroso del Señor. Pero ahora ha venido un acreedor para llevarse a mis dos hijos como esclavos». | 1 Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried to Elisha, "Your servant my husband is dead; and you know that your servant feared the LORD, but the creditor has come to take my two children to be his slaves." |
| 2 Eliseo le dijo: «¿Qué puedo hacer por ti? Dime qué tienes en tu casa». Ella le respondió: «Tu servidora no tiene en su casa nada más que un frasco de aceite». | 2 And Elisha said to her, "What shall I do for you? Tell me; what have you in the house?" And she said, "Your maidservant has nothing in the house, except a jar of oil." |
| 3 Eliseo le dijo: «Ve y pide prestados a tos tus vecinos unos recipientes vacíos; cuántos más sean, mejor. | 3 Then he said, "Go outside, borrow vessels of all your neighbors, empty vessels and not too few. |
| 4 Luego entra y enciérrate con tus hijos; echa el aceite en todos esos recipientes, y cuando estén llenos, colócalos aparte». | 4 Then go in, and shut the door upon yourself and your sons, and pour into all these vessels; and when one is full, set it aside." |
| 5 Ella se fue y se encerró con sus hijos; estos le presentaban los recipientes, y ella los iba llenando. | 5 So she went from him and shut the door upon herself and her sons; and as she poured they brought the vessels to her. |
| 6 Cuando todos estuvieron llenos, ella dijo a su hijo: «Alcánzame otro recipiente». Pero él respondió: «Ya no quedan más». Entonces dejó de correr el aceite. | 6 When the vessels were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another vessel." And he said to her, "There is not another." Then the oil stopped flowing. |
| 7 Ella fue a informar al hombre de Dios, y este le dijo: «Ve a vender el aceite y paga la deuda; después, tú y tus hijos podrán vivir con el resto». | 7 She came and told the man of God, and he said, "Go, sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on the rest." |
| 8 Un día, Eliseo pasó por Sunam. Había allí una mujer pudiente, que le insistió para que se quedara a comer. Desde entonces, cada vez que pasaba, él iba a comer allí. | 8 One day Elisha went on to Shunem, where a wealthy woman lived, who urged him to eat some food. So whenever he passed that way, he would turn in there to eat food. |
| 9 Ella dijo a su marido: «Mira, me he dado cuenta de que ese que pasa siempre por nuestra casa es un santo hombre de Dios. | 9 And she said to her husband, "Behold now, I perceive that this is a holy man of God, who is continually passing our way. |
| 10 Vamos a construirle una pequeña habitación en la terraza; le pondremos allí una cama, una mesa, una silla y una lámpara, y así, cuando él venga, tendrá donde alojarse». | 10 Let us make a small roof chamber with walls, and put there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so that whenever he comes to us, he can go in there." |
| 11 Un día Eliseo llegó por allí, se retiró a la habitación de arriba y se acostó. | 11 One day he came there, and he turned into the chamber and rested there. |
| 12 Después dijo a Guejazí, su servidor: «Llama a esa buena sunamita». El servidor la llamó, y ella se presentó ante él. | 12 And he said to Gehazi his servant, "Call this Shunammite." When he had called her, she stood before him. |
| 13 Eliseo dijo entonces a Guejazí: «Dile: Realmente tú te has desvivido por nosotros: ¿qué se puede hacer por ti? ¿Necesitas una recomendación para el rey o el jefe del ejército?». Ella respondió: «Me siento muy bien donde estoy, en medio de mi gente». | 13 And he said to him, "Say now to her, See, you have taken all this trouble for us; what is to be done for you? Would you have a word spoken on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?" She answered, "I dwell among my own people." |
| 14 Pero Eliseo insistió: «Entonces, ¿qué se puede hacer por ella?». Guejazí respondió: «Lamentablemente, no tiene un hijo y su marido es viejo». | 14 And he said, "What then is to be done for her?" Gehazi answered, "Well, she has no son, and her husband is old." |
| 15 «Llámala», dijo Eliseo. Cuando la llamó, ella se quedó junto a la puerta, | 15 He said, "Call her." And when he had called her, she stood in the doorway. |
| 16 y Eliseo le dijo: El año próximo, para esta misma época, tendrás un hijo en tus brazos». Ella exclamó: «No, señor, por favor; tú eres un hombre de Dios, no engañes a tu servidora». | 16 And he said, "At this season, when the time comes round, you shall embrace a son." And she said, "No, my lord, O man of God; do not lie to your maidservant." |
| 17 Pero la mujer concibió, y dio a luz un hijo al año siguiente, para esa misma época, como se lo había dicho Eliseo. | 17 But the woman conceived, and she bore a son about that time the following spring, as Elisha had said to her. |
| 18 El niño creció. Y un día en que había ido a ver a su padre, que estaba con los segadores, | 18 When the child had grown, he went out one day to his father among the reapers. |
| 19 le dijo: «¡Ay, mi cabeza! ¡Ay, mi cabeza!». El padre dijo al servidor: «Llévaselo a su madre». | 19 And he said to his father, "Oh, my head, my head!" The father said to his servant, "Carry him to his mother." |
| 20 El lo tomó y se lo llevó a su madre. El niño estuvo en la falda de su madre hasta el mediodía y luego murió. | 20 And when he had lifted him, and brought him to his mother, the child sat on her lap till noon, and then he died. |
| 21 Entonces ella subió, lo acostó en la cama del hombre de Dios, cerró la puerta y salió. | 21 And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out. |
| 22 Después mandó llamar a su marido y le dijo: «Envíame, por favor, a uno de los servidores con un asna; voy corriendo a ver al hombre de Dios, y en seguida vuelvo». | 22 Then she called to her husband, and said, "Send me one of the servants and one of the asses, that I may quickly go to the man of God, and come back again." |
| 23 El le preguntó: «¿Por qué vas a verlo hoy, si no es día de luna nueva ni sábado?». Pero ella le dijo: «No te preocupes». | 23 And he said, "Why will you go to him today? It is neither new moon nor sabbath." She said, "It will be well." |
| 24 Luego hizo ensillar el asna y dijo a su servidor: «Toma la rienda y camina. No me detengas por el camino, a no ser que yo te lo diga». | 24 Then she saddled the ass, and she said to her servant, "Urge the beast on; do not slacken the pace for me unless I tell you." |
| 25 Así partió y llegó adonde estaba el hombre de Dios, en el monte Carmelo. Cuando el hombre de Dios la divisó a lo lejos, dijo a Guejazí, su servidor: «Ahí viene nuestra sunamita. | 25 So she set out, and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel. When the man of God saw her coming, he said to Gehazi his servant, "Look, yonder is the Shunammite; |
| 26 Corre a su encuentro y dile: ¿Cómo estás? ¿Cómo están tu marido y tu hijo?». Ella respondió: «Todos bien». | 26 run at once to meet her, and say to her, Is it well with you? Is it well with your husband? Is it well with the child?" And she answered, "It is well." |
| 27 Y al llegar junto al hombre de Dios, en la montaña, se abrazó a sus pies. Guejazí se acercó para apartarla, pero el hombre de Dios dijo: «Déjala, porque está muy apenada, y el Señor me lo tuvo oculto, no me manifestó nada». | 27 And when she came to the mountain to the man of God, she caught hold of his feet. And Gehazi came to thrust her away. But the man of God said, "Let her alone, for she is in bitter distress; and the LORD has hidden it from me, and has not told me." |
| 28 Entonces ella dijo: «¿Le pedí yo un hijo a mi señor? ¿No te dije que no me ilusionaras?». | 28 Then she said, "Did I ask my lord for a son? Did I not say, Do not deceive me?" |
| 29 Eliseo dijo a Guejazí: «Cíñete el cinturón, toma mi bastón y vete. Si encuentras a alguien por el camino no lo saludes, y si alguien te saluda no le respondas. Coloca mi bastón sobre el rostro del muchacho». | 29 He said to Gehazi, "Gird up your loins, and take my staff in your hand, and go. If you meet any one, do not salute him; and if any one salutes you, do not reply; and lay my staff upon the face of the child." |
| 30 Pero la madre replicó: «Juro por la vida del Señor y por tu propia vida que no te dejaré». Entonces Eliseo se levantó y fue detrás de ella. | 30 Then the mother of the child said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So he arose and followed her. |
| 31 Mientras tanto, Guejazí se les había adelantado y había puesto el bastón sobre el rostro del muchacho, pero este no dio señales de vida. Volvió entonces a presentarse ante Eliseo y le comunicó: «El muchacho no se ha despertado». | 31 Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff upon the face of the child, but there was no sound or sign of life. Therefore he returned to meet him, and told him, "The child has not awaked." |
| 32 Cuando Eliseo llegó a la casa, vio que el muchacho estaba muerto, tendido sobre su lecho. | 32 When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on his bed. |
| 33 En seguida entró, se encerró sólo con el muchacho y oró al Señor. | 33 So he went in and shut the door upon the two of them, and prayed to the LORD. |
| 34 Luego subió a la cama, se acostó sobre el niño y puso su boca, sus ojos y sus manos sobre la boca, los ojos y las manos del niño; permaneció recostado sobre él y la carne del niño entró en calor. | 34 Then he went up and lay upon the child, putting his mouth upon his mouth, his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands; and as he stretched himself upon him, the flesh of the child became warm. |
| 35 Se puso a caminar por la casa de un lado a otro, se levantó y se recostó sobre él hasta siete veces. Entonces el muchacho estornudó y abrió los ojos. | 35 Then he got up again, and walked once to and fro in the house, and went up, and stretched himself upon him; the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. |
| 36 Eliseo llamó a Guejazí y le ordenó: «Llama a la sunamita». Cuando la llamó, ella vino y Eliseo le dijo: «Toma a tu hijo». | 36 Then he summoned Gehazi and said, "Call this Shunammite." So he called her. And when she came to him, he said, "Take up your son." |
| 37 Ella entró y cayó a los pies de Eliseo con el rostro en tierra. Después levantó a su hijo y salió. | 37 She came and fell at his feet, bowing to the ground; then she took up her son and went out. |
| 38 Eliseo volvió a Guilgal, cuando el hambre se hacía sentir en la región. Mientras la comunidad de profetas estaba sentada delante de él, dijo a su servidor: «Coloca sobre el fuego la olla grande y prepara un caldo para la comunidad de profetas». | 38 And Elisha came again to Gilgal when there was a famine in the land. And as the sons of the prophets were sitting before him, he said to his servant, "Set on the great pot, and boil pottage for the sons of the prophets." |
| 39 Uno de ellos salió al campo para recoger algunas hierbas. Encontró una especie de viña silvestre, de la que recogió los frutos salvajes hasta llenar su manto. Al volver, los cortó en pedazos y los echó a la olla del caldo, porque nadie sabía lo que eran. | 39 One of them went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine and gathered from it his lap full of wild gourds, and came and cut them up into the pot of pottage, not knowing what they were. |
| 40 Luego sirvieron la comida a los hombres, pero apenas probaron el caldo, se pusieron a gritar: «¡La muerte está en esa olla, hombre de Dios!» Y no pudieron comer. | 40 And they poured out for the men to eat. But while they were eating of the pottage, they cried out, "O man of God, there is death in the pot!" And they could not eat it. |
| 41 Eliseo dijo: «Traigan harina». El la arrojó en la olla y agregó: «Sírvele a esta gente, para que coman». Y ya no había nada malo en la olla. | 41 He said, "Then bring meal." And he threw it into the pot, and said, "Pour out for the men, that they may eat." And there was no harm in the pot. |
| 42 Llegó un hombre de Baal Salisá, trayendo al hombre de Dios pan de los primeros frutos: veinte panes de cebada y grano recién cortado, en una alforja. Eliseo dijo: «Dáselo a la gente para que coman». | 42 A man came from Baal-shalishah, bringing the man of God bread of the first fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and fresh ears of grain in his sack. And Elisha said, "Give to the men, that they may eat." |
| 43 Pero su servidor respondió: «¿Cómo voy a servir esto a cien personas?». «Dáselo a la gente para que coman, replicó él, porque así habla el Señor: Comerán y sobrará». | 43 But his servant said, "How am I to set this before a hundred men?" So he repeated, "Give them to the men, that they may eat, for thus says the LORD, 'They shall eat and have some left.'" |
| 44 El servidor se lo sirvió: todos comieron y sobró, conforme a la palabra del Señor. | 44 So he set it before them. And they ate, and had some left, according to the word of the LORD. |
