| 1 El hombre se unió a Eva, su mujer, y ella concibió y dio a luz a Caín. Entonces dijo: «He procreado un varón, con la ayuda del Señor». | 1 Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, "I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD." |
| 2 Más tarde dio a luz a Abel, el hermano de Caín, Abel fue pastor de ovejas y Caín agricultor. | 2 And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a tiller of the ground. |
| 3 Al cabo de un tiempo, Caín presentó como ofrenda al Señor algunos frutos del suelo, | 3 In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, |
| 4 mientras que Abel le ofreció las primicias y lo mejor de su rebaño. El Señor miró con agrado a Abel y su ofrenda, | 4 and Abel brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, |
| 5 pero no miró a Caín ni su ofrenda. Caín se mostró muy resentido y agachó la cabeza. | 5 but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. |
| 6 El Señor le dijo: «¿Por qué estás resentido y tienes la cabeza baja? | 6 The LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry, and why has your countenance fallen? |
| 7 Si obras bien podrás mantenerla erguida; si obras mal, el pecado está agazapado a la puerta y te acecha, pero tú debes dominarlo». | 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is couching at the door; its desire is for you, but you must master it." |
| 8 Caín dijo a su hermano Abel: «Vamos afuera». Y cuando estuvieron en el campo, se abalanzó sobre su hermano y lo mató. | 8 Cain said to Abel his brother, "Let us go out to the field." And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and killed him. |
| 9 Entonces el Señor preguntó a Caín: «¿Dónde está tu hermano Abel?». «No lo sé», respondió Caín. «¿Acaso yo soy el guardián de mi hermano?». | 9 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" He said, "I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?" |
| 10 Pero el Señor le replicó: «¿Qué has hecho? ¡Escucha! La sangre de tu hermano grita hacia mí desde el suelo. | 10 And the LORD said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground. |
| 11 Por eso maldito seas lejos del suelo que abrió sus fauces para recibir la sangre de tu hermano derramada por ti. | 11 And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand. |
| 12 Cuando lo cultives, no te dará más su fruto, y andarás por la tierra errante y vagabundo». | 12 When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength; you shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth." |
| 13 Caín respondió al Señor: «Mi castigo es demasiado grande para poder sobrellevarlo. | 13 Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is greater than I can bear. |
| 14 Hoy me arrojas lejos del suelo fértil; yo tendré que ocultarme de tu presencia y andar por la tierra errante y vagabundo, y el primero que me salga al paso me matará». | 14 Behold, thou hast driven me this day away from the ground; and from thy face I shall be hidden; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will slay me." |
| 15 «Si es así, le dijo el Señor, el que mate a Caín deberá pagarlo siete veces». Y el Señor puso una marca a Caín, para que al encontrarse con él, nadie se atreviera a matarlo. | 15 Then the LORD said to him, "Not so! If any one slays Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold." And the LORD put a mark on Cain, lest any who came upon him should kill him. |
| 16 Luego Caín se alejó de la presencia del Señor y fue a vivir a la región de Nod, al este de Edén. | 16 Then Cain went away from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, east of Eden. |
| 17 Caín se unió a su mujer, y ella concibió y dio a luz a Henoc. Caín fue el fundador de una ciudad, a la que puso el nombre de su hijo Henoc. | 17 Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch. |
| 18 A Henoc le nació Irad. Irad fue padre de Mejuíael; Mejuíael fue padre de Metusael, y Metusael fue padre de Lamec. | 18 To Enoch was born Irad; and Irad was the father of Me-huja-el, and Me-huja-el the father of Me-thusha-el, and Me-thusha-el the father of Lamech. |
| 19 Lamec tuvo dos mujeres: una se llamaba Adá, y la otra, Silá. | 19 And Lamech took two wives; the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. |
| 20 Adá fue madre de Iabal, el antepasado de los que viven en campamentos y crían ganado. | 20 Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have cattle. |
| 21 El nombre de su hermano era Iubal, el antepasado de los que tocan la lira y la flauta. | 21 His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. |
| 22 Silá, por su parte, fue madre de Tubal Caín, el antepasado de los forjadores de bronce y de los herreros. Naamá fue hermana de Tubal Caín. | 22 Zillah bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah. |
| 23 Lamec dijo a sus mujeres: «¡Adá y Silá, escuchen mi voz: mujeres de Lamec, oigan mi palabra! Yo maté a un hombre por una herida, y a un muchacho por una contusión. | 23 Lamech said to his wives: "Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, hearken to what I say: I have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me. |
| 24 Porque Caín será vengado siete veces, pero Lamec lo será setenta y siete». | 24 If Cain is avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy-sevenfold." |
| 25 Adán se unió a su mujer, y ella tuvo un hijo, al que puso el nombre de Set, diciendo: «Dios me dio otro descendiente en lugar de Abel, porque Caín lo mató». | 25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, "God has appointed for me another child instead of Abel, for Cain slew him." |
| 26 También Set tuvo un hijo, al que llamó Enós. Fue entonces cuando se comenzó a invocar el nombre del Señor. | 26 To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time men began to call upon the name of the LORD. |
