| 1 Jacob alzó los ojos, y al ver que Esaú venía acompañado de cuatrocientos hombres, repartió a los niños entre Lía, Raquel y las dos esclavas. | 1 And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two maids. |

| 5 Luego dirigió una mirada a su alrededor, y al ver a las mujeres y a los niños, preguntó: «¿Quiénes son estos que están contigo?». «Son los hijos que Dios ha concedido a tu servidor», respondió Jacob. | 5 And when Esau raised his eyes and saw the women and children, he said, "Who are these with you?" Jacob said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant." |
| 6 Entonces se le acercaron las esclavas con sus hijos y se postraron ante él. | 6 Then the maids drew near, they and their children, and bowed down; |
| 7 Inmediatamente vino Lía con sus hijos, y también se postraron. Por último se adelantaron José y Raquel, e hicieron lo mismo. | 7 Leah likewise and her children drew near and bowed down; and last Joseph and Rachel drew near, and they bowed down. |
| 8 Esaú preguntó: «¿Qué intentabas hacer con todo ese ganado que me salió al paso?». «Lograr que mi señor me diera la bienvenida», respondió Jacob. | 8 Esau said, "What do you mean by all this company which I met?" Jacob answered, "To find favor in the sight of my lord." |
| 9 Pero Esaú añadió: «Ya tengo bastante, querido hermano. Quédate con lo que es tuyo». | 9 But Esau said, "I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself." |
| 10 «No, le dijo Jacob; si quieres hacerme un favor, acepta el regalo que te ofrezco, porque ver tu rostro ha sido lo mismo que ver el rostro de Dios, ya que me has recibido tan afectuosamente. | 10 Jacob said, "No, I pray you, if I have found favor in your sight, then accept my present from my hand; for truly to see your face is like seeing the face of God, with such favor have you received me. |
| 11 Toma el obsequio que te ha sido presentado, porque Dios me ha favorecido y yo tengo todo lo necesario». Y ante tanta insistencia, Esaú aceptó. | 11 Accept, I pray you, my gift that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough." Thus he urged him, and he took it. |
| 12 Después Esaú continuó diciendo: «Vámonos de aquí, y yo te serviré de escolta». | 12 Then Esau said, "Let us journey on our way, and I will go before you." |
| 13 Pero Jacob respondió: «Mi señor sabe que los niños son delicados. Además, las ovejas y las vacas han tenido cría, y yo debo velar por ellas. Bastará con exigirles un solo día de marcha forzada, para que muera todo el rebaño. | 13 But Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are frail, and that the flocks and herds giving suck are a care to me; and if they are overdriven for one day, all the flocks will die. |
| 14 Tú sigue adelante, mientras yo avanzo lentamente, al paso de la caravana que me va precediendo, y al paso de los niños. Luego te alcanzaré en Seír». | 14 Let my lord pass on before his servant, and I will lead on slowly, according to the pace of the cattle which are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir." |
| 15 Esaú dijo entonces: «Permíteme al menos que ponga a tu disposición una parte de los hombres que me acompañan». «¿Para qué?», respondió Jacob. «Basta que seas benévolo conmigo». | 15 So Esau said, "Let me leave with you some of the men who are with me." But he said, "What need is there? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord." |
| 16 Aquel mismo día, Esaú emprendió el camino de regreso a Seír, | 16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. |
| 17 mientras que Jacob siguió avanzando hasta Sucot. Allí edificó una casa para él, y chozas para el ganado. Fue por eso que se dio a ese lugar el nombre de Sucot, que significa «Chozas». | 17 But Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built himself a house, and made booths for his cattle; therefore the name of the place is called Succoth. |
| 18 A su regreso de Padán Aram, Jacob llegó sano y salvo a la ciudad de Siquem, que está en la tierra de Canaán, y acampó a la vista de la ciudad. | 18 And Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, on his way from Paddan-aram; and he camped before the city. |
| 19 Después compró a los hijos de Jamor, el padre de Siquem, por cien monedas de plata, la parcela de campo donde había instalado su campamento. | 19 And from the sons of Hamor, Shechem's father, he bought for a hundred pieces of money the piece of land on which he had pitched his tent. |
| 20 Allí erigió un altar, al que llamó «Dios, Dios de Israel». | 20 There he erected an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel. |
