1 Volsimi dall' altro lato, e vidi gl' inganni (e le forze) che sono fatte sotto il sole, e le lacrime de' meno possenti, e nessuno è adiutatore; e non pare che si possa contrastare a quelle forze, però ch' io li vidi destituiti di ogni adiutorio.	1 I turned myself to other things, and I saw the false accusations which are carried out under the sun, and the tears of the innocent, and that there was no one to console them; and that they were not able to withstand their violence, being destitute of all help.
2 E però lodai più li morti, che li vivi; (però che nessuno scampa delle loro forze).	2 And so, I praised the dead more than the living.
3 Già più è bene avventurato di nessuno di costoro, quello che non è nato ancora; però che non vide il male che si fa sotto il sole.	3 And happier than both of these, I judged him to be, who has not yet been born, and who has not yet seen the evils which are done under the sun.
4 E anche sì mi avvidi. (dall' altro lato), come gli uomini s' affaticano, (e ciascuno s' ingegna quanto sae), e vidi che l'uno ha invidia dell' altro; e anche in questo ha grande vanitade per soperchio rigoglio.	4 Again, I was contemplating all the labors of men. And I took notice that their endeavors are open to the envy of their neighbor. And so, in this, too, there is emptiness and superfluous anxiety.
5 E lo stolto (sì si strugge e) stropicciasi le mani, e mangiasi le carni sue, dicendo:	5 The foolish man folds his hands together, and he consumes his own flesh, saying:
6 egli è meglio uno pugnellino con riposo (e sanza fatica), che avere amendue piene le mani con fatica e con afflizione dell' animo.	6 “A handful with rest is better than both hands filled with labors and with affliction of the soul.”
7 Anche pensai (e volsimi dall' altro lato), e vidi un' altra vanità sotto il sole,	7 While considering this, I also discovered another vanity under the sun.
8 cioè che sarà l'uomo solo, sanza figliuolo e sanza fratelli, e si non si riposa mai, (e tutto il dì fulmina per guadagnare), e gli occhi suoi non si saziano di ricchezze; e non pensa mai, dicendo: doh, per che faccio io questo, e a cui raduno, e inganno l'anima mia con questi beni miei? e però sì è questo grande vanitade e affliggimento pessimo (e pericoloso).	8 He is one, and he does not have a second: no son, no brother. And yet he does not cease to labor, nor are his eyes satisfied with wealth, nor does he reflect, saying: “For whom do I labor and cheat my soul of good things?” In this, too, is emptiness and a most burdensome affliction.
9 Meglio è ad essere duo insieme, che uno; però che hanno utilitade (insieme) in compagnia.	9 Therefore, it is better for two to be together, than for one to be alone. For they have the advantage of their companionship.
10 Onde quando l'uomo si sconsola, il compagno si lo sostiene; e guai a chi è solo! imperò che s' elli cade, non ha chi l'aiuti rizzare.	10 If one falls, he shall be supported by the other. Woe to one who is alone. For when he falls, he has no one to lift him up.
11 E se i due dormiranno insieme, (si nutricherae l'uno l'altro, e) riscalderannosi insieme; or come si puote riscaldare (e confortare) uno solo?	11 And if two are sleeping, they warm one another. How can one person alone be warmed?
12 Ma se averà compagnia, se alcuno gli verrà adosso, aiuterannosi insieme, e vinceranno colui; onde la fune di tre fila malagevolmente si rompe.	12 And if a man can prevail against one, two may withstand him, and a threefold cord is broken with difficulty.
13 Meglio è l'uomo povero e giovane e savio, che none il re vecchio e pazzo, il quale non sa provedersi dinanzi.	13 Better is a boy, poor and wise, than a king, old and foolish, who does not know to look ahead for the sake of posterity.
14 Come alcuna volta avviene che l' uomo nato da legittimo reame, e poi che è re, consumasi (e distruggesi); e colui che era in prigione (in catene di povertade, per suo sapere) diventa poi re.	14 For sometimes, one goes forth from prison and chains, to a kingdom, while another, born to kingly power, is consumed by need.
15 Io vidi molta gente sotto il sole andare con quello secondo, cioè col povero savio e giovane, il quale entroe nel reame dell' altro.	15 I saw all the living who are walking under the sun, and I saw the next generation, who shall rise up in their places.
16 E sanza numero furono coloro del popolo, li quali furono sotto il vecchio inanzi lui; ma chi verrà di poi a stare col giovane, non si rallegrerà del primo. Anche questo sì è vanitade e affliggimento d'animo.	16 The number of people, out of all who existed before these, is boundless. And those who will exist afterwards shall not rejoice in them. But this, too, is emptiness and an affliction of the spirit.
17 Quando tu entri in chiesa, non vi andare frettamente, ma pònti mente a' piedi, e appròssimati d'udire (la parola di Dio e ubbidiscila); però che meglio è ubbidire, che none sacrificio delli stolti, i quali non sanno quello che facciono di male.	17 Guard your foot, when you step into the house of God, and draw near, so that you may listen. For obedience is much better than the sacrifices of the foolish, who do not know the evil that they are doing.
