1 Vedendo Iacob, che gli alimenti si vendevano in Egitto, disse a' suoi figliuoli: perchè sete negli genti?	1 And Jacob hearing that food was sold in Egypt, said to his sons: Why are ye careless?
2 Io hoe udito dire che il grano si vende in Egitto; andatevi, e comperate di quelle cose che ci sono di bisogno, acciò che noi possiamo vivere, e non ci consumiamo per disagio.	2 I have heard that wheat is sold in Egypt: go ye down, and buy us necessaries, that we may live, and not be consumed with want.
3 Adunque andarono li X fratelli di Iosef in Egitto, acciò che comperassero della biada.	3 So the ten brethren of Joseph went down, to buy corn in Egypt:
4 E Beniamin ritenuto fu a casa da Iacob; il quale avea detto a'fratelli suoi, che per avventura nell'andare non sostenghi alcuna cosa di male.	4 Whilst Benjamin was kept at home by Jacob, who said to his brethren: Lest perhaps he take any harm in the journey.
5 E venuti sono nella terra d'Egitto con altri i quali andavano per comperare. Ma era la fame nella terra di Canaan.	5 And they entered into the land of Egypt with others that went to buy. For the famine was in the land of Chanaan.
6 E Iosef era principe d'Egitto; ed anche alla volontade sua le biade si vendeano a' popoli. E con ciosia cosa che gli fratelli suoi l'adorassero,	6 And Joseph was governor in the land of Egypt, and corn was sold by his direction to the people. And when his brethren had bowed down to him,
7 ed egli li conoscesse, quasi più duro favellava loro che agli altri, domandando loro: onde siete venuti? Li quali respuosero: della terra di Canaan, acciò che noi comperiamo al vivere quello ch' è bisogno.	7 And he knew them, he spoke as it were to strangers somewhat roughly, asking them: Whence came you? They answered: From the land of Chanaan, to buy necessaries of life.
8 E pertanto egli conoscea loro, e da loro non era conosciuto.	8 And though he knew his brethren, he was not known by them.
9 E ricordossi de' sogni, i quali alcuna volta avea veduti, e disse: voi siete spie, e siete venuti acciò che voi le cose più debili veggiate della terra.	9 And remembering the dreams, which formerly he had dreamed, he said to them: You are spies. You are come to view the weaker parts of the land.
10 Li quali dissero: non è così, signore; na noi, servi tuoi, siamo venuti per comperare de' cibi.	10 But they said: It is not so, my lord, but thy servants are come to buy food.
11 Tutti noi siamo figliuoli d'uno uomo; pacifici siamo venuti, e niuna cosa noi, servi tuoi, abbiamo pensata rea.	11 We are all the sons of one man: we are come as peaceable men, neither do thy servants go about any evil.
12 A quali rispuose: altramente è; voi siete venuti a considerare che questa terra fosse isfornita.	12 And he answered them: It is otherwise: you are come to consider the unfenced parts of this land.
13 Ma quelli dissero e rispuosero: dodeci fratelli siamo, tuoi servi, tutti figliuoli d'uno uomo nella terra di Canaan; e lo più piccolo è col padre nostro, e l'altro non v'è.	13 But they said: We thy servants are twelve brethren, the sons of one man in the land of Chanaan: the youngest is with our father, the other is not living.
14 E quegli disse: questo è quello ch' io dissi, che voi siete spie.	14 He saith: This is it that I said: You are spies.
15 Già ora lo sperimento di voi piglierò; per la salute di Faraone, voi non vi partite di qui, insino a tanto che non ci verrà lo vostro fratello minimo.	15 I shall now presently try what you are: by the health of Pharao you shall not depart hence, until your youngest brother come.
16 Mandate uno di voi, e menatelo qua; ma voi starete nella prigione, insino che fieno provate le cose che voi avete dette, quali elle siano o vere o false; altrimente, per la salute di Faraone, voi siete spie.	16 Send one of you to fetch him: and you shall be in prison, till what you have said be proved, whether it be true or false: or else by the health of Pharao you are spies.
17 E diede loro alle guardie tre dì.	17 So he put them in prison three days.
18 Ma il dì terzo, tratti dalla prigione, disse a loro: fate quello che io vi dissi, acciò che voi vi viate, imperciò ch' io temo Iddio.	18 And the third day he brought them out of prison, and said: Do as I have said, and you shall live: for I fear God.
19 Se voi siete pacifichi, l'uno di voi fratelli starà nella prigione; e voi ve n'andate, e portatevi la biada, che avete comperata, alle case vostre.	19 If you be peaceable men, let one of your brethren be bound in prison: and go ye your ways and carry the corn that you have bought, unto your houses.
20 E lo vostro fratello minore menate a me, acciò ch' io possa provare le vostre parole, e non moriate. E fecero com'egli avea detto.	20 And bring your youngest brother to me, that I may find your words to be true, and you may not die. They did as he had said.
21 E favellarono insieme: noi patiamo questo meritamente, per ciò che noi peccammo nel nostro fanciullo, veggendo l'angoscia dell' anima sua, quando egli pregava noi, e noi non l'udimmo; e perciò viene sopra noi la tribulazione.	21 And they talked one to another: We deserve to suffer these things, because we have sinned against our brother, seeing the anguished of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear: therefore is this affliction come upon us.
22 De' quali l'uno, Ruben, disse: o non lo dissi io a voi: non vogliate peccare nel fanciullo? e non udiste me. Certamente lo sangue suo si cerca.	22 And Ruben one of them, said: Did not I say to you: Do not sin against the boy: and you would not hear me? Behold his blood is required.
23 Ma non sapeano che Iosef gl' intendesse, per ciò che per interprete favellava a loro.	23 And they knew not that Joseph understood, because he spoke to them by an interpreter.
24 E partissi uno poco, e pianse; e ritornato favello loro.	24 And he turned himself away a little while, and wept: and returning he spoke to them.
25 E togliendo Simeon e legandolo, essendovi coloro presenti, comandò a'ministri, che gli empiessero li sacchi loro di grano, e riponessero le pecunie di ciascuno ne'sacchi loro, e che fosse dato loro di sopra li cibi per la via; i quali fecero così.	25 And taking Simeon, and binking him in their presence, he commanded his servants to fill their sacks with wheat, and to put every man's money again in their sacks, and to give them besides provisions for the way: and they did so.
26 E quelli, ponendo li sacchi in su li asini, si partirono.	26 But they having loaded their asses with the corn, went their way.
27 E aperto l'uno sacco per dare rodere alla sacco bestia dall'una parte, era la pecunia nelpresso alla bocca.	27 And one of them opening his sack, to give his beast provender in the inn, saw the money in the sack's mouth;
28 E disse a' suoi fratelli: in verità io ho tro vato la pecunia nel sacco. E maravigliandosi, ispa ventati, dissero insieme: che cosa è questo, che Iddio ha fatto a noi?	28 And said to his brethren: My money is given me again, hehold it is in the sack. And thye were astonished, and troubled, and said to one another: What is this that God hath done unto us?
29 E vennero a Iacob, loro padre, nella terra di Canaan; e narrarono ogni cosa che loro era in tervenuta, dicendo:	29 And they came to Jacob their father in the land of Chanaan, and they told him all things that had befallen them, saying:
30 Favelloe a noi lo signore di quella terra molto duro, e pensò noi fossimo spie della provincia.	30 The lord of the land spoke roughly to us, and took us to be spies of the country.
31 Al quale respondemmo: siamo noi pacifichi, nè non ci sforziamo di alcuna insidia.	31 And we answered him: We are peaceable men, and we mean no plot.
32 Duodeci fratelli, d'uno padre generati, siamo; l'uno non v'è, e lo minore sta col padre nella terra ('anaan.	32 We are twelve brethren born of one father: one is not living, the youngest is with our father in the land of Chanaan.
33 Il quale disse a noi: così proverò che siate voi pacifichi; uno di voi fratelli lasciate presso di me, e tollete li cibi necessarii alle case vostre, e andatene.	33 And he said to us: Hereby shall I know that you are peaceable men: Leave one of your brethren with me, and take ye necessary provision for your houses, and go your ways.
34 E il fratello vostro minore menatelo a me, acciò ch' io sappia che voi non siate spie, e questo che rimane nella pregione lo possiate riavere, ed ancora abbiate licenza, da quindi innanzi, di comprare quello che voi vorrete.	34 And bring your youngest brother to me, that I may know you are not spies: and you may receive this man again, that is kept in prison: and afterwards may have leave to buy what you will.
35 Queste parole dette, quando la biada si traeva fuori de' sacchi, tutti trovarono nella bocca del sacco le legate pecunie.	35 When they had told this, they poured out their corn and every man found his money tied in the mouth of his sack: and all being astonished together,
36 E ispaventati insieme tutti, disse a loro il padre Iacob: senza figliuoli faceste me essere; Iosef non è vivo, e Simeone è tenuto in pregione, e Be niamin mi torrete; in me tutti questi mali sono ritornati.	36 Their father Jacob said: You have made me to be without children: Joseph is not living, Simeon is kept in bonds, and Benjamin you will take away: all these evils are fallen upon me.
37 Al quale respuose Ruben: due miei figliuoli uccidi, se io non rimenerò lui a te; dà lui nella mano mia, ed io lui a te renderò.	37 And Ruben answered him: Kill my two sons if I bring him not again to thee: deliver him unto my hand, and I will restore him to thee.
38 E quegli disse: non venerà lo figliuolo mio con esso voi; lo suo fratello è morto, ed egli solo rimase; se alcuna cosa avversaria intervenisse a lui nella terra alla quale voi ite, mi vedreste li capelli miei canuti con dolore allo inferno.	38 But he said: My son shall not go down with you: his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if any mischief befall him in the land to which you go, you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to hell.
