1 Quem toca no pez ficará manchado; e quem trata com o orgulhoso, tornar-se-á orgulhoso.	1 He who touches pitch blackens his hand; he who associates with an impious man learns his ways.
2 Quem se liga com um mais poderoso do que ele, põe (sob os ombros) uma pesada carga. Não te tornes amigo de um mais poderoso do que tu.	2 Bear no burden too heavy for you; go with no one greater or wealthier than yourself. How can the earthen pot go with the metal cauldron? When they knock together, the pot will be smashed:
3 Que ligação pode haver entre um pote de barro e um pote de ferro? Quando houver choque, (o pote de barro) será quebrado.	3 The rich man does wrong and boasts of it, the poor man is wronged and begs forgiveness.
4 O rico comete uma injustiça e em seguida se põe a gritar; o pobre, ofendido, guarda silêncio.	4 As long as the rich man can use you he will enslave you, but when you are exhausted, he will abandon you.
5 Enquanto lhe servires, ele te empregará; quando nada mais tiveres, ele te abandonará.	5 As long as you have anything he will speak fair words to you, and with smiles he will win your confidence;
6 Se tens haveres, ele se banqueteará contigo, te esgotará e não cuidará de tua sorte.	6 When he needs something from you he will cajole you, then without regret he will impoverish you.
7 Se lhe fores útil, ele te dominará; com um sorriso ele te dará esperanças, com belas palavras te dirá: De que necessitas?	7 While it serves his purpose he will beguile you, then twice or three times he will terrify you; When later he sees you he will pass you by, and shake his head over you.
8 Confundir-te-á com seus banquetes, até que te tenha exaurido duas ou três vezes; e, por fim, zombará de ti; depois, vendo-te, abandornar-te-á, e abanará a cabeça, escarnecendo de ti.	8 Guard against being presumptuous; be not as those who lack sense.
9 Humilha-te perante Deus e espera que sua mão (execute).	9 When invited by a man of influence, keep your distance; then he will urge you all the more.
10 Tem cuidado em não te deixares seduzir, para que não caias numa loucura aviltante.	10 Be not bold with him lest you be rebuffed, but keep not too far away lest you be forgotten.
11 Não te rebaixes em tua sabedoria, para não suceder que esse rebaixamento te arraste à loucura.	11 Engage not freely in discussion with him, trust not his many words; For by prolonged talk he will test you, and though smiling he will probe you.
12 Se um poderoso te chamar, retira-te, e ele será ainda mais levado a insistir.	12 Mercilessly he will make of you a laughingstock, and will not refrain from injury or chains.
13 Não sejas importuno, para não acontecer que ele se canse de ti; não te afastes muito dele, para não suceder que ele te esqueça.	13 Be on your guard and take care never to accompany men of violence.
14 Não tenhas a audácia de falar de igual para igual com ele, e não confies em suas longas conversas. Pois fazendo-te falar muito, ele te experimentará, e com um sorriso te interrogará sobre os teus segredos.	14 Every living thing loves its own kind, every man a man like himself.
15 Seu coração impiedoso relembrará todas as tuas palavras, e não te poupará nem aos maus tratos nem às cadeias.	15 Every being is drawn to its own kind; with his own kind every man associates.
16 Cuida de ti e presta bem atenção aos teus ouvidos, pois caminhas à beira de um abismo.	16 Is a wolf ever allied with a lamb? So it is with the sinner and the just.
17 Mas, ouvido tudo isso, encara-o como um sonho, e serás vigilante;	17 Can there be peace between the hyena and the dog? Or between the rich and the poor can there be peace?
18 ama a Deus durante toda a tua vida, e invoca-o para tua salvação.	18 Lion's prey are the wild asses of the desert; so too the poor are feeding grounds for the rich.
19 Todo ser vivo ama o seu semelhante, assim todo homem ama o seu próximo.	19 A proud man abhors lowliness; so does the rich man abhor the poor.
20 Toda carne se une a outra carne de sua espécie, e todo homem se associa ao seu semelhante.	20 When a rich man stumbles he is supported by a friend; when a poor man trips he is pushed down by a friend.
21 O logo jamais terá amizade com o cordeiro: assim é entre o pecador e o justo.	21 Many are the supporters for a rich man when he speaks; though what he says is odious, it wins approval. When a poor man speaks they make sport of him; he speaks wisely and no attention is paid him.
22 Que relação pode haver entre um santo homem e um cão? Que ligação pode ter um rico com um pobre?	22 A rich man speaks and all are silent, his wisdom they extol to the clouds. A poor man speaks and they say: "Who is that?" If he slips they cast him down.
23 O onagro é a presa do leão no deserto: assim os pobres servem de pasto aos ricos.	23 Wealth is good when there is no sin; but poverty is evil by the standards of the proud.
24 E como a humanidade é abominada pelo orgulhoso, do mesmo modo o pobre causa horror ao rico.	24 The heart of a man changes his countenance, either for good or for evil.
25 Um rico abalado é apoiado pelos seus amigos. O pobre que tropeça é ainda empurrado pelos seus companheiros.	25 The sign of a good heart is a cheerful countenance; withdrawn and perplexed is the laborious schemer.
26 Quando um rico é enganado, numerosos são aqueles que o vêm ajudá-lo; se diz tolices, o apóiam.
27 Quando um pobre é enganado, ainda merece censura, e, se falar com sabedoria, não o levam em consideração.
28 Se fala o rico, todos se calam, e glorificam suas palavras até às nuvens;
29 se fala um pobre, dizem: Que é este homem? E se ele tropeçar, fazem-no cair.
30 A riqueza é boa para quem não tem a consciência pesada, péssima é a pobreza do mau que se lastima.
31 O coração do homem modifica seu rosto, seja em bem, seja em mal.
32 O sinal de um coração feliz é um rosto alegre, tu o acharás dificilmente e com esforço.
