Prima lettera di Giovanni 4

LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Carissimi, non vogliate credere a ogni spirito, ma esaminate gli spiriti per conoscere se sono da Dio, poiché molti falsi profeti sono venuti nel mondo.	1 My dear friends, not every spirit is to be trusted, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God,for many false prophets are at large in the world.
2 Da questo voi conoscete lo spirito di Dio: ogni spirito che confessa Gesù Cristo venuto nella carne è da Dio;	2 This is the proof of the spirit of God: any spirit which acknowledges Jesus Christ, come in humannature, is from God,
3 e ogni spirito che non confessa Gesù non è da Dio. Ma questo è lo spirito dell'anticristo, del quale avete sentito che deve venire, anzi è già nel mondo.	3 and no spirit which fails to acknowledge Jesus is from God; it is the spirit of Antichrist, whose comingyou have heard of; he is already at large in the world.
4 Voi, figli, siete da Dio e li avete vinti, poiché chi è in voi è più grande di colui che è nel mondo.	4 Children, you are from God and have overcome them, because he who is in you is greater than he whois in the world.
5 Essi sono dal mondo; perciò parlano del mondo e il mondo li ascolta.	5 They are from the world, and therefore the world inspires what they say, and listens to them.
6 Noi siamo da Dio. Chi conosce Dio ascolta noi; chi non è da Dio non ascolta noi. Da ciò conosciamo lo spirito della verità e lo spirito dell'errore.	6 We are from God; whoever recognises God listens to us; anyone who is not from God refuses to listento us. This is how we can distinguish the spirit of truth from the spirit of falsehood.
7 Carissimi, amiamoci gli uni gli altri, poiché l'amore è da Dio e chi ama è generato da Dio e conosce Dio.	7 My dear friends, let us love one another, since love is from God and everyone who loves is a child ofGod and knows God.
8 Chi non ama non ha conosciuto Dio, poiché Dio è amore.	8 Whoever fails to love does not know God, because God is love.
9 L'amore di Dio si è manifestato tra noi in questo: Dio ha inviato il suo Figlio unigenito nel mondo, affinché noi avessimo la vita per mezzo di lui.	9 This is the revelation of God's love for us, that God sent his only Son into the world that we might havelife through him.
10 In questo si è manifestato l'amore: noi non abbiamo amato Dio, ma egli ha amato noi e ha inviato il Figlio suo come propiziazione per i nostri peccati.	10 Love consists in this: it is not we who loved God, but God loved us and sent his Son to expiate oursins.
11 Carissimi, se così Dio ha amato noi, anche noi dobbiamo amarci gli uni gli altri.	11 My dear friends, if God loved us so much, we too should love one another.
12 Nessuno ha mai visto Dio; se ci amiamo gli uni gli altri Dio rimane in noi e il suo amore in noi è perfetto.	12 No one has ever seen God, but as long as we love one another God remains in us and his love comesto its perfection in us.
13 Da questo conosciamo che noi rimaniamo in lui ed egli in noi: che egli ci ha dato del suo Spirito.	13 This is the proof that we remain in him and he in us, that he has given us a share in his Spirit.
14 E noi abbiamo visto e attestiamo che il Padre ha inviato il Figlio come salvatore del mondo.	14 We ourselves have seen and testify that the Father sent his Son as Saviour of the world.
15 Chi confessa che Gesù è il Figlio di Dio, Dio in lui rimane ed egli in Dio.	15 Anyone who acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him and he in God.
16 E noi abbiamo conosciuto e abbiamo creduto all'amore che Dio ha per noi. Dio è amore e chi rimane nell'amore rimane in Dio e Dio rimane in lui.	16 We have recognised for ourselves, and put our faith in, the love God has for us. God is love, andwhoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.
17 In questo l'amore che è in noi è perfetto: noi abbiamo piena sicurezza per il giorno del giudizio, poiché com'egli è, siamo anche noi in questo mondo. Nell'amore non vi è timore;	17 Love comes to its perfection in us when we can face the Day of Judgement fearlessly, because evenin this world we have become as he is.
18 anzi il perfetto amore scaccia il timore, perché il timore suppone il castigo e chi teme non è perfetto nell'amore.	18 In love there is no room for fear, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear implies punishment andno one who is afraid has come to perfection in love.
19 Noi dobbiamo amare, perché lui per primo ci ha amati.	19 Let us love, then, because he first loved us.
20 Se uno dice: "Io amo Dio" e poi odia il proprio fratello, è mentitore: chi infatti non ama il proprio fratello che vede, non può amare Dio che non vede.	20 Anyone who says 'I love God' and hates his brother, is a liar, since whoever does not love the brotherwhom he can see cannot love God whom he has not seen.
21 E noi abbiamo da lui questo comandamento: chi ama Dio ami anche il proprio fratello.	21 Indeed this is the commandment we have received from him, that whoever loves God, must also lovehis brother.
