Prima lettera di Giovanni 4

1 Carissimi, non vogliate credere a ogni spirito, ma esaminate gli spiriti per conoscere se sono da Dio, poiché molti falsi profeti sono venuti nel mondo.	1 Beloved, do not trust every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they belong to God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
2 Da questo voi conoscete lo spirito di Dio: ogni spirito che confessa Gesù Cristo venuto nella carne è da Dio;	2 This is how you can know the Spirit of God: every spirit that acknowledges Jesus Christ come in the flesh be longs to God,
3 e ogni spirito che non confessa Gesù non è da Dio. Ma questo è lo spirito dell'anticristo, del quale avete sentito che deve venire, anzi è già nel mondo.	3 and every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus does not belong to God. This is the spirit of the antichrist that, as you heard, is to come, but in fact is already in the world.
4 Voi, figli, siete da Dio e li avete vinti, poiché chi è in voi è più grande di colui che è nel mondo.	4 You belong to God, children, and you have conquered them, for the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
5 Essi sono dal mondo; perciò parlano del mondo e il mondo li ascolta.	5 They belong to the world; accordingly, their teaching belongs to the world, and the world listens to them.
6 Noi siamo da Dio. Chi conosce Dio ascolta noi; chi non è da Dio non ascolta noi. Da ciò conosciamo lo spirito della verità e lo spirito dell'errore.	6 We belong to God, and anyone who knows God listens to us, while anyone who does not belong to God refuses to hear us. This is how we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of deceit.
7 Carissimi, amiamoci gli uni gli altri, poiché l'amore è da Dio e chi ama è generato da Dio e conosce Dio.	7 Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God.
8 Chi non ama non ha conosciuto Dio, poiché Dio è amore.	8 Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love.
9 L'amore di Dio si è manifestato tra noi in questo: Dio ha inviato il suo Figlio unigenito nel mondo, affinché noi avessimo la vita per mezzo di lui.	9 In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him.
10 In questo si è manifestato l'amore: noi non abbiamo amato Dio, ma egli ha amato noi e ha inviato il Figlio suo come propiziazione per i nostri peccati.	10 In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as expiation for our sins.
11 Carissimi, se così Dio ha amato noi, anche noi dobbiamo amarci gli uni gli altri.	11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another.
12 Nessuno ha mai visto Dio; se ci amiamo gli uni gli altri Dio rimane in noi e il suo amore in noi è perfetto.	12 No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and his love is brought to perfection in us.
13 Da questo conosciamo che noi rimaniamo in lui ed egli in noi: che egli ci ha dato del suo Spirito.	13 This is how we know that we remain in him and he in us, that he has given us of his Spirit.
14 E noi abbiamo visto e attestiamo che il Padre ha inviato il Figlio come salvatore del mondo.	14 Moreover, we have seen and testify that the Father sent his Son as savior of the world.
15 Chi confessa che Gesù è il Figlio di Dio, Dio in lui rimane ed egli in Dio.	15 Whoever acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him and he in God.
16 E noi abbiamo conosciuto e abbiamo creduto all'amore che Dio ha per noi. Dio è amore e chi rimane nell'amore rimane in Dio e Dio rimane in lui.	16 We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us. God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.
17 In questo l'amore che è in noi è perfetto: noi abbiamo piena sicurezza per il giorno del giudizio, poiché com'egli è, siamo anche noi in questo mondo. Nell'amore non vi è timore;	17 In this is love brought to perfection among us, that we have confidence on the day of judgment because as he is, so are we in this world.
18 anzi il perfetto amore scaccia il timore, perché il timore suppone il castigo e chi teme non è perfetto nell'amore.	18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment, and so one who fears is not yet perfect in love.
19 Noi dobbiamo amare, perché lui per primo ci ha amati.	19 We love because he first loved us.
20 Se uno dice: "Io amo Dio" e poi odia il proprio fratello, è mentitore: chi infatti non ama il proprio fratello che vede, non può amare Dio che non vede.	20 If anyone says, "I love God," but hates his brother, he is a liar; for whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.
21 E noi abbiamo da lui questo comandamento: chi ama Dio ami anche il proprio fratello.	21 This is the commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
