1 Anch'io sono un uomo mortale come tutti e discendente del primo essere, plasmato di terra. Nel seno di una madre di carne fui scolpito,	1 I too am mortal like everyone else, a descendant of the first man formed from the earth. I was model edin flesh inside a mother's womb,
2 solidificato in dieci mesi nel sangue dal seme maschile e dal piacere, compagno del sonno.	2 where, for ten months, in blood I acquired substance -- the result of virile seed and pleasure, sleep'scompanion.
3 Appena nato, anch'io ho respirato l'aria comune e sono caduto su una terra che ha le medesime condizioni, essendo, come per tutti, il vagito la mia prima voce.	3 I too, when I was born, drew in the common air, I fel on the same ground that bears us al , and cryingwas the first sound I made, like everyone else.
4 Fui allevato in fasce e nelle preoccupazioni.	4 I was nurtured in swaddling clothes, with every care.
5 Nessun re ebbe diverso principio di nascita;	5 No king has known any other beginning of existence;
6 uguale è l'ingresso di tutti nella vita e uguale la dipartita.	6 for there is only one way into life, and one way out of it.
7 Per questo pregai, e mi fu data l'intelligenza; invocai, e venne in me lo spirito di sapienza.	7 And so I prayed, and understanding was given me; I entreated, and the spirit of Wisdom came to me.
8 La preferii agli scettri e ai troni e stimai le ricchezze un nulla a paragone di lei;	8 I esteemed her more than sceptres and thrones; compared with her, I held riches as nothing.
9 non paragonai a lei la pietra più preziosa, perché tutto l'oro al suo cospetto è poca sabbia e come fango sarà computato davanti a lei l'argento.	9 I reckoned no precious stone to be her equal, for compared with her, al gold is a pinch of sand, andbeside her, silver ranks as mud.
10 L'amai più della salute e della bellezza, preferii possedere lei in cambio della luce, perché lo splendore che promana da lei non tramonta.	10 I loved her more than health or beauty, preferred her to the light, since her radiance never sleeps.
11 Tutti i beni mi sono venuti insieme con essa e incalcolabili ricchezze sono nelle sue mani.	11 In her company al good things came to me, and at her hands incalculable wealth.
12 Di tutto mi son rallegrato, perché ne è guida la sapienza, ma ignoravo che essa è madre di tali cose.	12 All these delighted me, since Wisdom brings them, though I did not then realise that she was theirmother.
13 Senza frode ho imparato e senza invidia insegno, le sue ricchezze non nascondo;	13 What I learned diligently, I shal pass on liberally, I shal not conceal how rich she is.
14 essa è un tesoro inesauribile per gli uomini; quanti lo acquistano, ottengono l'amicizia con Dio, raccomandati per i doni dell'educazione.	14 For she is to human beings an inexhaustible treasure, and those who acquire this win God'sfriendship, commended to him by the gifts of instruction.
15 Mi conceda Dio di parlarne secondo il desiderio, di pensare in modo degno dei doni ricevuti, perché egli è guida della sapienza e direttore dei sapienti.	15 May God grant me to speak as he would wish and conceive thoughts worthy of the gifts I havereceived, since he is both guide to Wisdom and director of sages;
16 Nelle sue mani siamo noi e le nostre parole, ogni intelligenza e perizia dei lavori.	16 for we are in his hand, yes, ourselves and our sayings, and al intellectual and al practical knowledge.
17 Egli mi ha dato la vera conoscenza delle cose, per comprendere il sistema dell'universo e la forza degli elementi,	17 He it was who gave me sure knowledge of what exists, to understand the structure of the world andthe action of the elements,
18 il principio, la fine e la metà dei tempi, l'avvicendarsi dei solstizi e il succedersi delle stagioni,	18 the beginning, end and middle of the times, the alternation of the solstices and the succession of theseasons,
19 i cicli degli anni e la posizione degli astri,	19 the cycles of the year and the position of the stars,
20 la natura degli animali e l'istinto delle bestie, il potere degli spiriti e i ragionamenti degli uomini, la varietà delle piante e le virtù delle radici;	20 the natures of animals and the instincts of wild beasts, the powers of spirits and human mentalprocesses, the varieties of plants and the medical properties of roots.
21 quanto è nascosto e manifesto ho conosciuto, perché la sapienza, artefice di tutto, mi ha ammaestrato.	21 And now I understand everything, hidden or visible, for Wisdom, the designer of all things, hasinstructed me.
22 In essa c'è uno spirito intelligente, santo, unico, molteplice, sottile, mobile, perspicace, senza macchia, terso, inoffensivo, amante del bene, acuto,	22 For within her is a spirit intel igent, holy, unique, manifold, subtle, mobile, incisive, unsul ied, lucid,invulnerable, benevolent, shrewd,
23 irresistibile, benefico, amante dell'uomo, immutabile, fermo, senza preoccupazioni, onnipotente, onniveggente e che penetra tutti gli spiriti intelligenti, puri e sottilissimi.	23 irresistible, beneficent, friendly to human beings, steadfast, dependable, unperturbed, almighty, al -surveying, penetrating al intel igent, pure and most subtle spirits.
24 La sapienza è più mobile di ogni moto e per la sua purezza pervade e penetra in ogni cosa.	24 For Wisdom is quicker to move than any motion; she is so pure, she pervades and permeates allthings.
25 E' esalazione della potenza di Dio, effluvio puro della gloria dell'Onnipotente; per questo nulla d'impuro cade su di essa.	25 She is a breath of the power of God, pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty; so nothing impurecan find its way into her.
26 E' irradiazione della luce eterna, specchio tersissimo dell'attività di Dio e immagine della sua bontà.	26 For she is a reflection of the eternal light, untarnished mirror of God's active power, and image of hisgoodness.
27 Pur essendo unica, può tutto, restando in se stessa, rinnova ogni cosa e attraverso le generazioni, entrando nelle anime sante, prepara gli amici di Dio e i profeti.	27 Although she is alone, she can do everything; herself unchanging, she renews the world, and,generation after generation, passing into holy souls, she makes them into God's friends and prophets;
28 Nulla infatti Dio ama se non chi convive con la sapienza.	28 for God loves only those who dwel with Wisdom.
29 Essa è più bella del sole e supera ogni costellazione; paragonata alla luce, risulta più splendida;	29 She is indeed more splendid than the sun, she outshines al the constel ations; compared with light,she takes first place,
30 a questa certamente succede la notte, ma la malvagità non può prevalere sulla sapienza.	30 for light must yield to night, but against Wisdom evil cannot prevail.
