1 Allora Giuseppe si gettò sulla faccia di suo padre e pianse su di lui e lo baciò.	1 Joseph, realizing this, fell upon his father’s face, weeping and kissing him.
2 Poi Giuseppe ordinò ai medici ch'erano a suo servizio di imbalsamare suo padre. I medici imbalsamarono Israele,	2 And he instructed his servant physicians to embalm his father with aromatics.
3 e ci vollero quaranta giorni, perché tanti se ne richiedono per l'imbalsamazione. Gli Egiziani lo piansero settanta giorni.	3 And while they were fulfilling his orders, forty days passed. For this was the method of embalming dead bodies. And Egypt wept for him for seventy days.
4 Passati i giorni del suo lutto, Giuseppe parlò alla corte del faraone: "Deh, se ho trovato grazia ai vostri occhi, vogliate riferire agli orecchi del faraone queste parole:	4 And when the time for mourning was fulfilled, Joseph spoke to the family of Pharaoh: “If I have found favor in your sight, speak to the ears of Pharaoh.
5 Mio padre mi ha fatto giurare, dicendo: "Ecco, io sto per morire: tu devi seppellirmi nel mio sepolcro che mi sono scavato nella terra di Canaan". Permettimi dunque di salire ora a seppellire mio padre, poi ritornerò".	5 For my father made me swear, saying: ‘See, I am dying. You shall bury me in my sepulcher which I dug for myself in the land of Canaan.’ Therefore, I shall go up and bury my father, and then return.”
6 Il faraone rispose: "Sali e seppellisci tuo padre com'egli ti ha fatto giurare".	6 And Pharaoh said to him, “Go up and bury your father, just as he made you swear.”
7 Allora Giuseppe salì a seppellire suo padre e con lui salirono tutti i ministri del faraone, gli anziani della sua casa, tutti gli anziani della terra di Egitto,	7 So as he went up, all the elders of the house of Pharaoh went with him, along with every patriarch in the land of Egypt,
8 tutta la casa di Giuseppe e i suoi fratelli e la casa di suo padre: lasciarono nella terra di Gosen soltanto i loro bambini e i loro greggi e i loro armenti.	8 and the house of Joseph with his brothers, except their little ones and flocks and also the herds, which they left behind in the land of Goshen.
9 Con lui salirono pure i carri da guerra e la cavalleria, così da formare un corteggio imponente assai.	9 Likewise, he had in his company chariots and horsemen. And it became a crowd without restraint.
10 Giunti all'Aia di Atad, che è al di là del Giordano vi fecero grandi e profondissimi lamenti e Giuseppe celebrò per suo padre un lutto di sette giorni.	10 And they arrived at the threshing place of Atad, which is situated beyond the Jordan. There they spent seven full days celebrating the funeral rites with a great and vehement lamentation.
11 I Cananei che abitavano il paese videro il lutto all'Aia di Atad e dissero: "E' un lutto grave questo per gli Egiziani". Per questo la si chiamò Abel-Mizraim, che si trova al di là del Giordano.	11 And when the inhabitants of the land of Canaan had seen this, they said, “This is a great Lamentation for the Egyptians.” And for this reason, the name of that place was called, “The Lamentation of Egypt.”
12 Poi i suoi figli fecero per lui quello che egli aveva ordinato loro,	12 And so, the sons of Jacob did just as he had instructed them.
13 lo trasportarono nella terra di Canaan e lo seppellirono nella caverna del campo di Macpela, che Abramo aveva comperato col campo da Efron l'hittita come proprietà sepolcrale, e che si trova in faccia a Mamre.	13 And carrying him into the land of Canaan, they buried him in the double cave, which Abraham had bought along with its field, from Ephron the Hittite, as a possession for burial, opposite Mamre.
14 Poi, dopo aver sepolto suo padre, Giuseppe tornò in Egitto insieme con i suoi fratelli e con tutti quelli che erano saliti con lui a seppellire suo padre.	14 And Joseph returned into Egypt with his brothers and all those of his company, having buried his father.
15 Ma i fratelli di Giuseppe incominciarono ad aver paura, dato che il loro padre era morto, e dissero: "Chissà se Giuseppe non ci tratterà da nemici e non ci renderà tutto il male che noi gli facemmo?".	15 Now that he was dead, his brothers were afraid, and they said to one another: “Perhaps now he may remember the injury that he suffered and requite us for all the evil that we did to him.”
16 Allora mandarono a dire a Giuseppe: "Tuo padre, prima della sua morte ha dato quest'ordine:	16 So they sent a message to him, saying: “Your father instructed us before he died,
17 "Così direte a Giuseppe: Deh, perdona il delitto dei tuoi fratelli e il loro peccato, perché ti hanno fatto del male!". Or dunque, perdona il delitto dei servi del Dio di tuo padre!". Giuseppe pianse quando gli si parlò così.	17 that we should say these words to you from him: ‘I beg you to forget the wickedness of your brothers, and the sin and malice that they practiced against you.’ Likewise, we petition you to release the servants of the God of your father from this iniquity.” Hearing this, Joseph wept.
18 Poi andarono i suoi fratelli stessi e si gettarono a terra davanti a lui e dissero: "Eccoci tuoi schiavi!".	18 And his brothers went to him. And reverencing prostrate on the ground, they said, “We are your servants.”
19 Ma Giuseppe disse loro: "Non temete! Sono io forse al posto di Dio?	19 And he answered them: “Do not be afraid. Are we able to resist the will of God?
20 Se voi avevate ordito del male contro di me, Dio ha pensato di farlo servire a un bene, per compiere quello che oggi si avvera: salvare la vita ad un popolo numeroso.	20 You devised evil against me. But God turned it into good, so that he might exalt me, just as you presently discern, and so that he might bring about the salvation of many peoples.
21 Or dunque non temete, io provvederò al sostentamento per voi e per i vostri bambini". Così li consolò e fece loro coraggio.	21 Do not be afraid. I will pasture you and your little ones.” And he consoled them, and he spoke mildly and leniently.
22 Ora Giuseppe con la famiglia di suo padre abitò in Egitto; e Giuseppe visse centodieci anni.	22 And he lived in Egypt with all his father’s house; and he survived for one hundred and ten years. And he saw the sons of Ephraim to the third generation. Likewise, the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born onto Joseph’s knees.
23 Così Giuseppe vide i figlioli di Efraim fino alla terza generazione, ed anche i figli di Machir, figlio di Manasse, nacquero sulle ginocchia di Giuseppe.	23 After these things happened, he said to his brothers: “God will visit you after my death, and he will make you ascend from this land into the land which he swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
24 Poi Giuseppe disse ai suoi fratelli: "Io sto per morire, ma Dio verrà certamente a visitarvi e vi farà salire da questa terra alla terra ch'egli ha promesso con giuramento ad Abramo, a Isacco e a Giacobbe".	24 And when he had made them swear and had said, “God will visit you; carry my bones with you from this place,”
25 Giuseppe fece giurare i figli di Israele in questi termini: "Dio verrà certamente a visitarvi, e allora voi porterete via di qui le mie ossa".	25 he died, having completed one hundred and ten years of his life. And having been embalmed with aromatics, he was laid to rest in a coffin in Egypt.
26 Poi Giuseppe morì all'età di centodieci anni; lo imbalsamarono e fu posto in un sarcofago in Egitto.
