LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Allora Giuseppe si gettò sulla faccia di suo padre e pianse su di lui e lo baciò.	1 At this Joseph threw himself on his father's face, covering it with tears and kisses.
2 Poi Giuseppe ordinò ai medici ch'erano a suo servizio di imbalsamare suo padre. I medici imbalsamarono Israele,	2 Then Joseph ordered the doctors in his service to embalm his father. The doctors embalmed Israel,
3 e ci vollero quaranta giorni, perché tanti se ne richiedono per l'imbalsamazione. Gli Egiziani lo piansero settanta giorni.	3 and it took them forty days, for embalming takes forty days to complete. The Egyptians mourned himfor seventy days.
4 Passati i giorni del suo lutto, Giuseppe parlò alla corte del faraone: "Deh, se ho trovato grazia ai vostri occhi, vogliate riferire agli orecchi del faraone queste parole:	4 When the period of mourning for him was over, Joseph said to Pharaoh's household, 'If you have anyaffection for me, see that this message reaches Pharaoh's ears,
5 Mio padre mi ha fatto giurare, dicendo: "Ecco, io sto per morire: tu devi seppellirmi nel mio sepolcro che mi sono scavato nella terra di Canaan". Permettimi dunque di salire ora a seppellire mio padre, poi ritornerò".	5 "My father put me under oath, saying: I am about to die. In the tomb which I dug for myself in Canaan, that is where you are to bury me. So may I have leave to go up and bury my father, and then come back?" '
6 Il faraone rispose: "Sali e seppellisci tuo padre com'egli ti ha fatto giurare".	6 Pharaoh replied, 'Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do.'
7 Allora Giuseppe salì a seppellire suo padre e con lui salirono tutti i ministri del faraone, gli anziani della sua casa, tutti gli anziani della terra di Egitto,	7 Joseph went up to bury his father, and with him went all Pharaoh's officials, the dignitaries of hispalace and al the dignitaries of Egypt,
8 tutta la casa di Giuseppe e i suoi fratelli e la casa di suo padre: lasciarono nella terra di Gosen soltanto i loro bambini e i loro greggi e i loro armenti.	8 as wel as all Joseph's family, his brothers and his father's family. The only people they left behind inGoshen were those unfit to travel, and their flocks and cattle.
9 Con lui salirono pure i carri da guerra e la cavalleria, così da formare un corteggio imponente assai.	9 Chariots and horsemen went up with him too; it was a very large retinue.
10 Giunti all'Aia di Atad, che è al di là del Giordano vi fecero grandi e profondissimi lamenti e Giuseppe celebrò per suo padre un lutto di sette giorni.	10 On arriving at Goren-ha-Atad, which is across the Jordan, they there held a long and solemnlamentation, and Joseph observed seven days' mourning for his father.
11 I Cananei che abitavano il paese videro il lutto all'Aia di Atad e dissero: "E' un lutto grave questo per gli Egiziani". Per questo la si chiamò Abel-Mizraim, che si trova al di là del Giordano.	11 When the Canaanites, the local inhabitants, witnessed the mourning at Goren-ha-Atad, they said,'This is a solemn act of mourning by the Egyptians,' which is why the place was given the name Abel-Mizraim-itis across the Jordan.
12 Poi i suoi figli fecero per lui quello che egli aveva ordinato loro,	12 His sons did what he had ordered them to do for him.
13 lo trasportarono nella terra di Canaan e lo seppellirono nella caverna del campo di Macpela, che Abramo aveva comperato col campo da Efron l'hittita come proprietà sepolcrale, e che si trova in faccia a Mamre.	13 His sons carried him to Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field at Machpelah, facing Mamre,which Abraham had bought from Ephron the Hittite as a burial site of his own.
14 Poi, dopo aver sepolto suo padre, Giuseppe tornò in Egitto insieme con i suoi fratelli e con tutti quelli che erano saliti con lui a seppellire suo padre.	14 Then Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all those who had come up with him to bury hisfather.
15 Ma i fratelli di Giuseppe incominciarono ad aver paura, dato che il loro padre era morto, e dissero: "Chissà se Giuseppe non ci tratterà da nemici e non ci renderà tutto il male che noi gli facemmo?".	15 Seeing that their father was dead, Joseph's brothers said, 'What if Joseph intends to treat us asenemies and pay us back for al the wrong we did him?'
16 Allora mandarono a dire a Giuseppe: "Tuo padre, prima della sua morte ha dato quest'ordine:	16 So they sent this message to Joseph: 'Before your father died, he gave us this order:
17 "Così direte a Giuseppe: Deh, perdona il delitto dei tuoi fratelli e il loro peccato, perché ti hanno fatto del male!". Or dunque, perdona il delitto dei servi del Dio di tuo padre!". Giuseppe pianse quando gli si parlò così.	17 "You are to say to Joseph: Now please forgive the crime and faults of your brothers and al thewrong they did you." So now please forgive the crime of the servants of your father's God.' Joseph wept at themessage they sent to him.
18 Poi andarono i suoi fratelli stessi e si gettarono a terra davanti a lui e dissero: "Eccoci tuoi schiavi!".	18 Then his brothers went to him themselves and, throwing themselves at his feet, said, 'Take us asyour slaves!'
19 Ma Giuseppe disse loro: "Non temete! Sono io forse al posto di Dio?	19 But Joseph replied, 'Do not be afraid; is it for me to put myself in God's place?
20 Se voi avevate ordito del male contro di me, Dio ha pensato di farlo servire a un bene, per compiere quello che oggi si avvera: salvare la vita ad un popolo numeroso.	20 The evil you planned to do me has by God's design been turned to good, to bring about the presentresult: the survival of a numerous people.
21 Or dunque non temete, io provvederò al sostentamento per voi e per i vostri bambini". Così li consolò e fece loro coraggio.	21 So there is no need to be afraid; I shall provide for you and your dependants.' In this way hereassured them by speaking affectionately to them.
22 Ora Giuseppe con la famiglia di suo padre abitò in Egitto; e Giuseppe visse centodieci anni.	22 So Joseph stayed in Egypt with his father's family; and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.
23 Così Giuseppe vide i figlioli di Efraim fino alla terza generazione, ed anche i figli di Machir, figlio di Manasse, nacquero sulle ginocchia di Giuseppe.	23 Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim's line, as also the children of Machir son of Manasseh,who were born on Joseph's lap.
24 Poi Giuseppe disse ai suoi fratelli: "Io sto per morire, ma Dio verrà certamente a visitarvi e vi farà salire da questa terra alla terra ch'egli ha promesso con giuramento ad Abramo, a Isacco e a Giacobbe".	24 At length Joseph said to his brothers, 'I am about to die; but God wil be sure to remember you kindlyand take you out of this country to the country which he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.'
25 Giuseppe fece giurare i figli di Israele in questi termini: "Dio verrà certamente a visitarvi, e allora voi porterete via di qui le mie ossa".	25 And Joseph put Israel's sons on oath, saying, 'When God remembers you with kindness, be sure totake my bones away from here.'
26 Poi Giuseppe morì all'età di centodieci anni; lo imbalsamarono e fu posto in un sarcofago in Egitto.	26 Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten; he was embalmed and laid in a coffin in Egypt.
