1 Samuel 8

1 When Samuel became old, he made his sons judges over Israel.	1 Samuel, étant devenu vieux, établit ses enfants pour juges sur Israël.
2 The name of his first-born son was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beer-sheba.	2 Son fils aîné s'appelait Joël, et le second Abia. Ils exerçaient la fonction de juges à Bersabée.
3 Yet his sons did not walk in his ways, but turned aside after gain; they took bribes and perverted justice.	3 Mais ils ne marchèrent point dans ses voies; ils se laissèrent corrompre par l'avarice, reçurent des présents, et rendirent des jugements injustes.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah,	4 Tous les anciens d'Israël s'étant donc assemblés, vinrent trouver Samuel à Ramatha,
5 and said to him, "Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint for us a king to govern us like all the nations."	5 et ils lui dirent: Voici que vous avez vieilli, et vos enfants ne marchent point dans vos voies. Etablissez donc sur nous un roi, comme en ont toutes les nations, afin qu'il nous juge.
6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, "Give us a king to govern us." And Samuel prayed to the LORD.	6 Cette proposition déplut à Samuel, quand il vit qu'ils lui disaient: Donnez-nous un roi, afin qu'il nous juge. Il pria donc le Seigneur.
7 And the LORD said to Samuel, "Hearken to the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them.	7 Et le Seigneur lui dit: Ecoutez la voix de ce peuple dans tout ce qu'ils vous disent; car ce n'est point vous, mais c'est Moi qu'ils rejettent, afin que Je ne règne point sur eux.
8 According to all the deeds which they have done to me, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you.	8 C'est ainsi qu'ils ont toujours fait depuis le jour où Je les ai tirés d'Egypte jusqu'à présent. Comme ils M'ont abandonné, et qu'ils ont servi des dieux étrangers, ils vous traitent aussi de même.
9 Now then, hearken to their voice; only, you shall solemnly warn them, and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them."	9 Ecoutez donc maintenant ce qu'ils vous disent; mais protestez-leur de Ma part, et déclarez-leur quel sera le droit du roi qui doit régner sur eux.
10 So Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking a king from him.	10 Samuel rapporta au peuple, qui lui avait demandé un roi, tout ce que le Seigneur lui avait dit;
11 He said, "These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen, and to run before his chariots;	11 et il ajouta: Voici quel sera le droit du roi qui vous gouvernera : Il prendra vos enfants pour conduire ses chariots; il s'en fera des cavaliers, et il les fera courir devant son char;
12 and he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots.	12 il en fera ses officiers, pour commander, les uns mille hommes et les autres cent; il prendra les uns pour labourer ses champs et pour recueillir ses blés, et les autres pour lui faire des armes et des chariots.
13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.	13 Il se fera de vos filles des parfumeuses, des cuisinières, et des boulangères.
14 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his servants.	14 Il prendra aussi vos champs, vos vignes, et vos meilleures oliveraies, et il les donnera à ses serviteurs.
15 He will take the tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and to his servants.	15 Il vous fera payer la dîme de vos blés et du revenu de vos vignes, pour avoir de quoi donner à ses eunuques et à ses officiers.
16 He will take your menservants and maidservants, and the best of your cattle and your asses, and put them to his work.	16 Il prendra vos serviteurs, vos servantes, et les jeunes gens les plus forts, avec vos ânes, et il les fera travailler pour lui.
17 He will take the tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves.	17 Il prendra aussi la dîme de vos troupeaux, et vous serez ses serviteurs.
18 And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves; but the LORD will not answer you in that day."	18 Vous crierez alors contre votre roi que vous vous serez élu; et le Seigneur ne vous exaucera point, parce que c'est vous-mêmes qui avez demandé d'avoir un roi.
19 But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, "No! but we will have a king over us,	19 Le peuple ne voulu point écouter ce discours de Samuel: Non, lui dirent-ils, nous aurons un roi qui nous gouverne.
20 that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may govern us and go out before us and fight our battles."	20 Nous serons comme toutes les autres nations. Notre roi nous jugera, il marchera à notre tête, et il combattra pour nous dans toutes nos guerres.
21 And when Samuel had heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the ears of the LORD.	21 Samuel, ayant entendu toutes ces paroles du peuple, les rapporta au Seigneur.
22 And the LORD said to Samuel, "Hearken to their voice, and make them a king." Samuel then said to the men of Israel, "Go every man to his city."	22 Et le Seigneur dit à Samuel: Faites ce qu'ils vous disent, et établissez un roi pour les gouverner. Samuel dit donc au peuple d'Israël: Que chacun retourne dans sa ville.
