1 The ark of the LORD was in the country of the Philistines seven months.	1 Rimase l'arca del Signore nel territorio dei Filistei sette mesi.
2 And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners and said, "What shall we do with the ark of the LORD? Tell us with what we shall send it to its place."	2 Poi i Filistei convocarono i sacerdoti e gli indovini e dissero: "Che dobbiamo fare dell'arca del Signore? Indicateci il modo di rimandarla alla sua sede".
3 They said, "If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it empty, but by all means return him a guilt offering. Then you will be healed, and it will be known to you why his hand does not turn away from you."	3 Risposero: "Se intendete rimandare l'arca del Dio d'Israele, non rimandatela vuota, ma pagate un tributo in ammenda della vostra colpa. Allora guarirete e vi sarà noto perché non si è ritirata da voi la sua mano".
4 And they said, "What is the guilt offering that we shall return to him?" They answered, "Five golden tumors and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines; for the same plague was upon all of you and upon your lords.	4 Chiesero: "Quale riparazione dobbiamo pagarle?". Risposero: "Secondo il numero dei capi dei Filistei, cinque bubboni d'oro e cinque topi d'oro, perché unico è stato il flagello per tutto il popolo e per i vostri capi.
5 So you must make images of your tumors and images of your mice that ravage the land, and give glory to the God of Israel; perhaps he will lighten his hand from off you and your gods and your land.	5 Fate dunque immagini dei vostri bubboni e immagini dei vostri topi che infestano la terra e datele in omaggio al Dio d'Israele, sperando che sia tolto il peso della sua mano da voi, dal vostro dio e dal vostro paese.
6 Why should you harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? After he had made sport of them, did not they let the people go, and they departed?	6 Perché ostinarvi come si sono ostinati gli Egiziani e il faraone? Dopo essere stati colpiti dai flagelli, non li lasciarono forse andare, cosicché essi partirono?
7 Now then, take and prepare a new cart and two milch cows upon which there has never come a yoke, and yoke the cows to the cart, but take their calves home, away from them.	7 Dunque fate un carro nuovo, poi prendete due vacche allattanti sulle quali non sia mai stato posto il giogo e attaccate queste vacche al carro, togliendo loro i vitelli e riconducendoli alla stalla.
8 And take the ark of the LORD and place it on the cart, and put in a box at its side the figures of gold, which you are returning to him as a guilt offering. Then send it off, and let it go its way.	8 Quindi prendete l'arca del Signore, collocatela sul carro e ponete gli oggetti d'oro che dovete pagarle in riparazione in una cesta appesa di fianco. Poi fatela partire e lasciate che se ne vada.
9 And watch; if it goes up on the way to its own land, to Beth-shemesh, then it is he who has done us this great harm; but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that struck us, it happened to us by chance."	9 E state a vedere: se salirà a Bet-Sèmes per la via che porta al suo territorio, essa ci ha provocato tutti questi mali così grandi; se no, sapremo che non ci ha colpiti la sua mano, ma per puro caso abbiamo avuto questo incidente".
10 The men did so, and took two milch cows and yoked them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home.	10 Quegli uomini fecero in tal modo. Presero due vacche allattanti, le attaccarono al carro e chiusero nella stalla i loro vitelli.
11 And they put the ark of the LORD on the cart, and the box with the golden mice and the images of their tumors.	11 Quindi collocarono l'arca del Signore sul carro con la cesta e i topi d'oro e le immagini dei bubboni.
12 And the cows went straight in the direction of Beth-shemesh along one highway, lowing as they went; they turned neither to the right nor to the left, and the lords of the Philistines went after them as far as the border of Beth-shemesh.	12 Le vacche andarono diritte per la strada di Bet-Sèmes percorrendo sicure una sola via e muggendo continuamente, ma non piegando né a destra né a sinistra. I capi dei Filistei le seguirono sino al confine con Bet-Sèmes.
13 Now the people of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley; and when they lifted up their eyes and saw the ark, they rejoiced to see it.	13 Gli abitanti di Bet-Sèmes stavano facendo la mietitura del grano nella pianura. Alzando gli occhi, scorsero l'arca ed esultarono a quella vista.
14 The cart came into the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh, and stopped there. A great stone was there; and they split up the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the LORD.	14 Il carro giunse al campo di Giosuè di Bet-Sèmes e si fermò là dove era una grossa pietra. Allora fecero a pezzi i legni del carro e offrirono le vacche in olocausto al Signore.
15 And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD and the box that was beside it, in which were the golden figures, and set them upon the great stone; and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices on that day to the LORD.	15 I leviti avevano tolto l'arca del Signore e la cesta che vi era appesa, nella quale stavano gli oggetti d'oro, e l'avevano posta sulla grossa pietra. In quel giorno gli uomini di Bet-Sèmes offrirono olocausti e immolarono vittime al Signore.
16 And when the five lords of the Philistines saw it, they returned that day to Ekron.	16 I cinque capi dei Filistei stettero ad osservare, poi tornarono il giorno stesso ad Ekron.
17 These are the golden tumors, which the Philistines returned as a guilt offering to the LORD: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, one for Ekron;	17 Sono questi i bubboni d'oro che i Filistei pagarono in ammenda al Signore: uno per Asdod, uno per Gaza, uno per Ascalon, uno per Gat, uno per Ekron.
18 also the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both fortified cities and unwalled villages. The great stone, beside which they set down the ark of the LORD, is a witness to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh.	18 Invece i topi d'oro erano pari al numero delle città filistee appartenenti ai cinque capi, dalle fortezze sino ai villaggi di campagna. A testimonianza di tutto ciò rimane oggi nel campo di Giosuè a Bet-Sèmes la grossa pietra, sulla quale avevano deposto l'arca del Signore.
19 And he slew some of the men of Beth-shemesh, because they looked into the ark of the LORD; he slew seventy men of them, and the people mourned because the LORD had made a great slaughter among the people.	19 Ma il Signore percosse gli uomini di Bet-Sèmes, perché avevano guardato l'arca del Signore; colpì nel popolo settanta persone su cinquantamila e il popolo fu in lutto perché il Signore aveva inflitto alla loro gente questo grave castigo.
20 Then the men of Beth-shemesh said, "Who is able to stand before the LORD, this holy God? And to whom shall he go up away from us?"	20 Gli uomini di Bet-Sèmes allora esclamarono: "Chi mai potrà stare alla presenza del Signore, questo Dio così santo? La manderemo via da noi; ma da chi?".
21 So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, "The Philistines have returned the ark of the LORD. Come down and take it up to you."	21 Perciò inviarono messaggeri agli abitanti di Kiriat-Iearìm con questa ambasciata: "I Filistei hanno ricondotto l'arca del Signore. Scendete e portatela presso di voi".
