1 The ark of the LORD was in the country of the Philistines seven months.	1 L’Arche de Yahvé resta sept mois dans le territoire des Philistins.
2 And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners and said, "What shall we do with the ark of the LORD? Tell us with what we shall send it to its place."	2 Les Philistins firent alors appel aux prêtres et aux devins: “Que ferons-nous de l’Arche de Yahvé, dirent-ils, dites-nous comment nous devons la renvoyer à sa place.”
3 They said, "If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it empty, but by all means return him a guilt offering. Then you will be healed, and it will be known to you why his hand does not turn away from you."	3 Ceux-ci répondirent: “Si vous renvoyez l’Arche du Dieu d’Israël, ne la renvoyez pas sans rien: remettez-lui une offrande de réparation, ainsi vous guérirez et vous saurez pourquoi la main de Dieu s’était abattue sur vous.”
4 And they said, "What is the guilt offering that we shall return to him?" They answered, "Five golden tumors and five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines; for the same plague was upon all of you and upon your lords.	4 On leur demanda encore: - “Quelle sera la réparation que nous enverrons?” Les devins répondirent: “Cinq tumeurs d’or et cinq souris d’or, selon le nombre des princes des Philistins, puisque c’est la même plaie qui vous a frappés, vous et vos princes.
5 So you must make images of your tumors and images of your mice that ravage the land, and give glory to the God of Israel; perhaps he will lighten his hand from off you and your gods and your land.	5 Faites des images de vos tumeurs, des images des souris qui ravagent votre pays, et rendez gloire au Dieu d’Israël. Peut-être sa main cessera-t-elle de vous frapper, vous, vos dieux et votre pays.
6 Why should you harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? After he had made sport of them, did not they let the people go, and they departed?	6 Pourquoi vous entêter comme l’ont fait les Égyptiens et leur Pharaon? Dieu les a tellement frappés qu’ils ont bien fini par les laisser partir.
7 Now then, take and prepare a new cart and two milch cows upon which there has never come a yoke, and yoke the cows to the cart, but take their calves home, away from them.	7 “Quant à vous, préparez maintenant un chariot neuf, prenez deux vaches qui allaitent encore et qui n’ont pas porté le joug. Vous attellerez les vaches au chariot pendant qu’on ramènera leurs petits à l’étable.
8 And take the ark of the LORD and place it on the cart, and put in a box at its side the figures of gold, which you are returning to him as a guilt offering. Then send it off, and let it go its way.	8 Vous prendrez l’Arche de Yahvé et vous la déposerez sur le chariot; quant aux objets d’or que vous lui remettrez en réparation, vous les placerez dans un coffre à côté de l’Arche et vous la laisserez partir.
9 And watch; if it goes up on the way to its own land, to Beth-shemesh, then it is he who has done us this great harm; but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that struck us, it happened to us by chance."	9 Alors regardez. Si elle prend le chemin de son pays vers Beth-Chémech, c’est lui sûrement qui nous a amené ces fléaux. Sinon, nous saurons que ce n’est pas sa main qui nous a frappés, mais que tout cela nous est arrivé par hasard.”
10 The men did so, and took two milch cows and yoked them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home.	10 On fit donc ainsi: on prit deux vaches qui allaitaient encore, on les attela au chariot et l’on ramena les petits à l’étable.
11 And they put the ark of the LORD on the cart, and the box with the golden mice and the images of their tumors.	11 On plaça l’Arche de Yahvé sur le chariot avec le coffre qui contenait les souris en or et les images des tumeurs.
12 And the cows went straight in the direction of Beth-shemesh along one highway, lowing as they went; they turned neither to the right nor to the left, and the lords of the Philistines went after them as far as the border of Beth-shemesh.	12 Les vaches prirent tout de suite la route de Beth-Chémech; elles allaient leur chemin et elles meuglaient, sans s’écarter à droite ni à gauche. Les princes des Philistins les suivirent jusqu’à la frontière de Beth-Chémech.
13 Now the people of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley; and when they lifted up their eyes and saw the ark, they rejoiced to see it.	13 Les gens de Beth-Chémech étaient en train de moissonner les blés dans la plaine. En levant les yeux, ils aperçurent l’Arche et ils allèrent tout joyeux au-devant d’elle.
14 The cart came into the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh, and stopped there. A great stone was there; and they split up the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the LORD.	14 Lorsque le chariot arriva au champ de Josué de Beth-Chémech, il s’arrêta. Il y avait là une grande pierre. On fendit le bois du chariot et on offrit les vaches en holocauste à Yahvé.
15 And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD and the box that was beside it, in which were the golden figures, and set them upon the great stone; and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices on that day to the LORD.	15 Les Lévites avaient descendu l’Arche de Yahvé avec le coffre qui était à côté d’elle et qui contenait les objets en or. Ils avaient déposé le tout sur la grande pierre. Les hommes de Beth-Chémech offrirent ce jour-là des holocaustes et des sacrifices à Yahvé.
16 And when the five lords of the Philistines saw it, they returned that day to Ekron.	16 Les cinq princes des Philistins en furent témoins; ils s’en retournèrent le jour-même à Ékron.
17 These are the golden tumors, which the Philistines returned as a guilt offering to the LORD: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, one for Ekron;	17 Voici la liste des tumeurs en or que les Philistins avaient offertes en réparation à Yahvé: une pour Ashdod, une pour Gaza, une pour Ashkélon, une pour Gat et une pour Ékron.
18 also the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both fortified cities and unwalled villages. The great stone, beside which they set down the ark of the LORD, is a witness to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh.	18 Il y avait autant de souris d’or que de villes, en comptant les villes fortifiées des cinq princes mais aussi les villages. La grande pierre sur laquelle on avait déposé l’Arche de Yahvé en garde le souvenir: elle est encore aujourd’hui dans le champ de Josué de Beth-Chémech.
19 And he slew some of the men of Beth-shemesh, because they looked into the ark of the LORD; he slew seventy men of them, and the people mourned because the LORD had made a great slaughter among the people.	19 Les fils de Yékonya, de Beth-Chémech, n’avaient pas participé à la fête quand on avait revu l’Arche de Yahvé. Yahvé en frappa 70 et le peuple se mit en deuil parce que Yahvé l’avait durement corrigé.
20 Then the men of Beth-shemesh said, "Who is able to stand before the LORD, this holy God? And to whom shall he go up away from us?"	20 Alors les gens de Beth-Chémech se dirent: “Qui pourrait tenir en face de Yahvé, le Dieu Saint? Chez qui pourrions-nous l’envoyer?”
21 So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, "The Philistines have returned the ark of the LORD. Come down and take it up to you."	21 Ils envoyèrent des messagers aux habitants de Kiryat-Yéarim: “Les Philistins, dirent-ils, ont rendu l’Arche de Yahvé, descendez et prenez-la chez vous.”
