1 Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, "What have I done? What is my guilt? And what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?"	1 David s’était enfui des Cellules-de-Rama. Il vint trouver Jonathan et lui dit: “Qu’ai-je fait? Quelle est ma faute et quel est mon péché envers ton père, pour qu’il veuille me tuer?”
2 And he said to him, "Far from it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me; and why should my father hide this from me? It is not so."	2 Jonathan répondit: “Non, tu ne mourras pas. Mon père ne me cache rien de ce qu’il fait, que ce soit important ou non. Pourquoi donc mon père me cacherait-il cela? Tu te trompes.”
3 But David replied, "Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes; and he thinks, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.' But truly, as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death."	3 Mais David lui dit: “Ton père sait très bien l’amitié que tu as pour moi, et il s’est dit: Il ne faut pas que Jonathan le sache, il le prendrait très mal. Mais je te le jure par la vie de Yahvé et sur ma propre tête: il n’y a qu’un pas entre moi et la mort.”
4 Then said Jonathan to David, "Whatever you say, I will do for you."	4 Alors Jonathan dit à David: “Que désires-tu? Je le ferai.”
5 David said to Jonathan, "Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit at table with the king; but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field till the third day at evening.	5 David lui répondit: “Demain c’est la nouvelle lune, et je dois m’asseoir à côté du roi pour manger; cependant laisse-moi partir et je me cacherai dans la campagne jusqu’au troisième soir.
6 If your father misses me at all, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me to run to Bethlehem his city; for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.'	6 Si ton père remarque mon absence, tu lui diras: “David m’a demandé la permission d’aller à Bethléem, sa ville natale, car il y a là un sacrifice annuel pour toute sa famille.
7 If he says, Good!' it will be well with your servant; but if he is angry, then know that evil is determined by him.	7 Si ton père répond: ‘C’est bon’, ton serviteur n’a rien à craindre; mais s’il se met en colère, tu sauras qu’il a décidé ma perte.
8 Therefore deal kindly with your servant, for you have brought your servant into a sacred covenant with you. But if there is guilt in me, slay me yourself; for why should you bring me to your father?"	8 Puisque tu as fait un pacte avec moi au nom de Yahvé, je te demande en raison de cette amitié: s’il y a une faute de ma part, tue-moi. Pourquoi me conduirais-tu jusqu’à ton père?”
9 And Jonathan said, "Far be it from you! If I knew that it was determined by my father that evil should come upon you, would I not tell you?"	9 Jonathan répondit: “Non, si je viens à savoir que mon père a décidé ta perte, je te préviendrai moi-même.”
10 Then said David to Jonathan, "Who will tell me if your father answers you roughly?"	10 David dit à Jonathan: “Qui me préviendra au cas où ton père te répondrait méchamment?”
11 And Jonathan said to David, "Come, let us go out into the field." So they both went out into the field.	11 Jonathan dit à David: “Viens, sortons dans la campagne.” Et tous deux sortirent dans la campagne.
12 And Jonathan said to David, "The LORD, the God of Israel, be witness! When I have sounded my father, about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if he is well disposed toward David, shall I not then send and disclose it to you?	12 Jonathan dit alors à David: “Par Yahvé Dieu d’Israël, dès demain ou après-demain je verrai ce que mon père a dans la tête. Si tout va bien pour toi, je t’enverrai quelqu’un et je te le ferai savoir;
13 But should it please my father to do you harm, the LORD do so to Jonathan, and more also, if I do not disclose it to you, and send you away, that you may go in safety. May the LORD be with you, as he has been with my father.	13 si je ne le fais pas, que Dieu me maudisse et me maudisse encore! De même, si mon père veut te faire du mal, je te le ferai savoir. Je te laisse donc partir, va en paix; Yahvé sera avec toi comme il a été avec mon père.
14 If I am still alive, show me the loyal love of the LORD, that I may not die;	14 Si alors je suis encore de ce monde, ne me fais pas mourir; que ta bonté pour moi soit comme celle de Yahvé.
15 and do not cut off your loyalty from my house for ever. When the LORD cuts off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth,	15 Ne prive jamais ma famille de ta bienveillance lorsque Yahvé aura exterminé tes ennemis de la surface de la terre.
16 let not the name of Jonathan be cut off from the house of David. And may the LORD take vengeance on David's enemies."	16 Si le nom de Jonathan disparaissait avec la maison de Saül, Yahvé en demanderait compte à la famille de David.”
17 And Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul.	17 Et de nouveau Jonathan fit un serment à David au nom de son amitié pour lui, car il l’aimait comme lui-même.
18 Then Jonathan said to him, "Tomorrow is the new moon; and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty.	18 Jonathan lui dit: “C’est demain la nouvelle lune et ton absence sera remarquée, on verra que ta place est vide.
19 And on the third day you will be greatly missed; then go to the place where you hid yourself when the matter was in hand, and remain beside yonder stone heap.	19 Attends donc le troisième jour; alors tu descendras et tu viendras à l’endroit où tu t’étais caché la première fois. Tu resteras là à côté de la borne,
20 And I will shoot three arrows to the side of it, as though I shot at a mark.	20 et moi, je tirerai trois flèches de ton côté en me fixant une cible.
21 And behold, I will send the lad, saying, Go, find the arrows.' If I say to the lad, Look, the arrows are on this side of you, take them,' then you are to come, for, as the LORD lives, it is safe for you and there is no danger.	21 Ensuite j’enverrai mon serviteur, je lui dirai: Va, recherche les flèches. Si je lui dit: Regarde, les flèches sont en deçà de toi, rapporte-les. Alors tu pourras venir car tu n’auras rien à craindre; par la vie de Yahvé il n’y aura aucun danger pour toi.
22 But if I say to the youth, Look, the arrows are beyond you,' then go; for the LORD has sent you away.	22 Mais si je dis à mon serviteur: Regarde, les flèches sont au-delà de toi, alors sauve-toi; cela voudra dire que Yahvé te fait partir.
23 And as for the matter of which you and I have spoken, behold, the LORD is between you and me for ever."	23 Pour ce qui est de notre alliance, Yahvé lui-même est entre moi et toi pour toujours.”
24 So David hid himself in the field; and when the new moon came, the king sat down to eat food.	24 David alla se cacher dans les champs. Lorsque la nouvelle lune arriva, le roi se mit à table pour le repas.
25 The king sat upon his seat, as at other times, upon the seat by the wall; Jonathan sat opposite, and Abner sat by Saul's side, but David's place was empty.	25 Il s’assit comme chaque fois sur le siège qui est contre le mur. Jonathan était en face de lui et Abner était assis à côté de Saül, mais la place de David était vide.
26 Yet Saul did not say anything that day; for he thought, "Something has befallen him; he is not clean, surely he is not clean."	26 Ce jour-là Saül ne dit rien, il pensait: “Il n’est pas pur, c’est une chose qui arrive. Sûrement il n’est pas pur.”
27 But on the second day, the morrow after the new moon, David's place was empty. And Saul said to Jonathan his son, "Why has not the son of Jesse come to the meal, either yesterday or today?"	27 Le lendemain de la nouvelle lune, le second jour, la place de David était encore vide. Saül dit à son fils Jonathan: “Pourquoi le fils de Jessé n’est-il pas venu au repas ni hier ni aujourd’hui?”
28 Jonathan answered Saul, "David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem;	28 Jonathan répondit à Saül: “David m’a demandé la permission d’aller à Bethléem.
29 he said, Let me go; for our family holds a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away, and see my brothers.' For this reason he has not come to the king's table."	29 Il m’a dit: ‘Laisse-moi aller, car nous avons un sacrifice de famille dans ma ville natale, et mon frère me l’a demandé; permets-moi de m’absenter et de voir mes frères.’ C’est pour cela qu’il n’est pas venu à la table du roi.”
30 Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, "You son of a perverse, rebellious woman, do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother's nakedness?	30 À ces mots, Saül se mit en colère contre Jonathan et lui dit: “Fils de prostituée! Je le savais bien, tu prends parti pour le fils de Jessé, à ta honte et à la honte de la nudité de ta mère.
31 For as long as the son of Jesse lives upon the earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established. Therefore send and fetch him to me, for he shall surely die."	31 Tant que le fils de Jessé sera de ce monde, il n’y aura de paix ni pour toi, ni pour ton royaume. Envoie donc le chercher, il mérite la mort.”
32 Then Jonathan answered Saul his father, "Why should he be put to death? What has he done?"	32 Jonathan répondit à son père Saül: “Pourquoi serait-il mis à mort? Qu’a-t-il fait?”
33 But Saul cast his spear at him to smite him; so Jonathan knew that his father was determined to put David to death.	33 Mais Saül leva sa lance en menaçant de le frapper et Jonathan comprit que son père avait décidé la mort de David.
34 And Jonathan rose from the table in fierce anger and ate no food the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, because his father had disgraced him.	34 Jonathan était tellement en colère qu’il quitta la table. Ce second jour de la nouvelle lune il ne mangea rien; il était fort peiné pour David, mais aussi parce que son père l’avait insulté.
35 In the morning Jonathan went out into the field to the appointment with David, and with him a little lad.	35 Le lendemain matin Jonathan sortit vers la campagne pour le rendez-vous avec David; son serviteur était avec lui.
36 And he said to his lad, "Run and find the arrows which I shoot." As the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.	36 Il dit à son serviteur: “Cours et rapporte les flèches que je tire.” Le garçon courait mais Jonathan lançait les flèches de manière à le dépasser,
37 And when the lad came to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan called after the lad and said, "Is not the arrow beyond you?"	37 et pendant que le jeune homme allait là où Jonathan avait tiré la flèche, Jonathan lui cria: “La flèche n’est-elle pas plus loin?”
38 And Jonathan called after the lad, "Hurry, make haste, stay not." So Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.	38 Jonathan cria encore à son serviteur: “Vite, dépêche-toi, ne t’arrête pas.” Le serviteur de Jonathan ramassa la flèche et revint vers son maître.
39 But the lad knew nothing; only Jonathan and David knew the matter.	39 Le serviteur ne savait rien de tout cela, seuls Jonathan et David étaient au courant.
40 And Jonathan gave his weapons to his lad, and said to him, "Go and carry them to the city."	40 Puis Jonathan remit ses armes à son serviteur en lui disant: “Va et reporte-les à la ville.”
41 And as soon as the lad had gone, David rose from beside the stone heap and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed three times; and they kissed one another, and wept with one another, until David recovered himself.	41 Lorsque le serviteur fut parti, David sortit de sa cachette, il tomba la face contre terre et se prosterna trois fois. Ensuite ils s’embrassèrent l’un l’autre, et ils pleurèrent longuement l’un sur l’autre, mais le moment de partir était venu pour David.
42 Then Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD shall be between me and you, and between my descendants and your descendants, for ever.'" And he rose and departed; and Jonathan went into the city.	42 Alors Jonathan lui dit: “Va en paix. Nous nous sommes fait un serment l’un à l’autre au nom de Yahvé, Yahvé sera entre moi et toi, entre ma race et ta race pour toujours.”
