1 And Samuel said to Saul, "The LORD sent me to anoint you king over his people Israel; now therefore hearken to the words of the LORD.	1 Samuel dit à Saül: “Yahvé m’a envoyé pour te consacrer comme roi de son peuple Israël. Maintenant, écoute Yahvé.
2 Thus says the LORD of hosts, I will punish what Amalek did to Israel in opposing them on the way, when they came up out of Egypt.	2 Voici ce que dit Yahvé des armées: Je veux punir Amalec pour ce qu’il a fait à Israël lorsqu’il remontait d’Égypte: il lui a barré la route.
3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.'"	3 Va donc frapper Amalec et jette l’anathème sur tout ce qui est à lui. Tu n’auras pas de pitié pour lui, tu mettras à mort les hommes, les femmes, les enfants, les nourrissons, les bœufs et les moutons, les chameaux et les ânes.”
4 So Saul summoned the people, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand men on foot, and ten thousand men of Judah.	4 Saül rassembla le peuple et le passa en revue à Télam: il y avait 200 000 hommes de pied, dont 10 000 de Juda.
5 And Saul came to the city of Amalek, and lay in wait in the valley.	5 Saül s’avança jusqu’à la ville d’Amalec et se cacha dans le ravin.
6 And Saul said to the Kenites, "Go, depart, go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them; for you showed kindness to all the people of Israel when they came up out of Egypt." So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.	6 Saül dit alors aux Kénites: “Éloignez-vous, séparez-vous des Amalécites, sinon vous serez exterminés avec eux alors que vous avez montré de la bonté à l’égard des Israélites lorsqu’ils montaient d’Égypte.” Les Kénites s’éloignèrent donc des Amalécites.
7 And Saul defeated the Amalekites, from Havilah as far as Shur, which is east of Egypt.	7 Saül écrasa Amalec depuis Havila jusqu’à Chour qui est à l’est de l’Égypte.
8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.	8 Il fit prisonnier Agag, le roi des Amalécites, et passa tout le peuple au fil de l’épée en raison de l’anathème.
9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them; all that was despised and worthless they utterly destroyed.	9 Mais Saül et son armée refusèrent de vouer à l’anathème Agag et le meilleur du petit et du gros bétail, les bêtes grasses et les agneaux, en un mot, tout ce qui était bon. Par contre ils vouèrent à l’anathème tout ce qui, dans le troupeau, était mauvais et sans valeur.
10 The word of the LORD came to Samuel:	10 Une parole de Yahvé fut alors adressée à Samuel:
11 "I repent that I have made Saul king; for he has turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments." And Samuel was angry; and he cried to the LORD all night.	11 “Je regrette d’avoir donné la royauté à Saül, car il s’est écarté de moi et n’a pas obéi à mes ordres.” Samuel en fut très mécontent et il supplia Yahvé toute la nuit.
12 And Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and it was told Samuel, "Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself and turned, and passed on, and went down to Gilgal."	12 Tôt le matin Samuel partit pour rencontrer Saül; on lui donna cette information: “Saül est allé à Karmel pour y dresser un monument en souvenir de sa victoire, puis il est reparti et est descendu à Guilgal.”
13 And Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, "Blessed be you to the LORD; I have performed the commandment of the LORD."	13 Lorsque Samuel arriva auprès de Saül, Saül lui dit: “Que Yahvé te bénisse, j’ai exécuté les ordres de Yahvé.”
14 And Samuel said, "What then is this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?"	14 Mais Samuel lui dit: “Quel est ce bruit de petit bétail que j’entends? Quel est ce bruit de gros bétail que j’entends également?”
15 Saul said, "They have brought them from the Amalekites; for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice to the LORD your God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed."	15 Saül répondit: “Nous les avons ramenés de chez les Amalécites. Le peuple a épargné le meilleur du petit et du gros bétail pour l’offrir en sacrifice à Yahvé ton Dieu, mais le reste ils l’ont voué à l’anathème.”
16 Then Samuel said to Saul, "Stop! I will tell you what the LORD said to me this night." And he said to him, "Say on."	16 Alors Samuel dit à Saül: “Arrête! Je vais t’apprendre ce que Yahvé m’a dit cette nuit.” Saül lui dit: “Parle.”
17 And Samuel said, "Though you are little in your own eyes, are you not the head of the tribes of Israel? The LORD anointed you king over Israel.	17 Samuel lui dit: “N’es-tu pas devenu le chef des tribus d’Israël? Yahvé ne t’a-t-il pas consacré comme roi sur Israël alors que tu étais si petit à tes propres yeux?
18 And the LORD sent you on a mission, and said, Go, utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.'	18 Yahvé t’avait confié une mission, il t’avait dit: Va, tu voueras à l’anathème ces pécheurs d’Amalécites, tu les combattras jusqu’à extermination.
19 Why then did you not obey the voice of the LORD? Why did you swoop on the spoil, and do what was evil in the sight of the LORD?"	19 Pourquoi n’as-tu pas écouté la voix de Yahvé? Pourquoi t’es-tu jeté sur le butin? Pourquoi as-tu fait ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahvé?”
20 And Saul said to Samuel, "I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, I have gone on the mission on which the LORD sent me, I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.	20 Saül répondit à Samuel: “J’ai écouté la voix de Yahvé, je suis parti en expédition là où Yahvé m’avait envoyé. J’ai ramené Agag, roi d’Amalec, et j’ai voué Amalec à l’anathème.
21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the best of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal."	21 Seulement le peuple a prélevé sur le butin le meilleur du petit et du gros bétail. Il l’a pris sur l’anathème pour l’offrir en sacrifice à Yahvé ton Dieu, à Guilgal.”
22 And Samuel said, "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.	22 Alors Samuel lui dit: “Penses-tu que Yahvé prenne autant de plaisir aux holocaustes et aux sacrifices, qu’à l’obéissance à sa parole? L’obéissance vaut mieux que le sacrifice, et la fidélité vaut mieux que la graisse des béliers.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has also rejected you from being king."	23 La révolte est un péché aussi grave que la sorcellerie, la désobéissance un crime aussi grave que l’idolâtrie. Puisque tu as rejeté la parole de Yahvé, Yahvé te rejette de la royauté!”
24 And Saul said to Samuel, "I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.	24 Saül dit à Samuel: “J’ai péché et j’ai désobéi à l’ordre de Yahvé et à ses paroles! C’est que je craignais le peuple et j’ai fait ce qu’il demandait.
25 Now therefore, I pray, pardon my sin, and return with me, that I may worship the LORD."	25 Maintenant, je t’en prie, pardonne mon péché et reviens avec moi pour que je me prosterne devant Yahvé.”
26 And Samuel said to Saul, "I will not return with you; for you have rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD has rejected you from being king over Israel."	26 Mais Samuel dit à Saül: “Je n’irai pas avec toi. Tu as rejeté la parole de Yahvé et Yahvé t’a rejeté: tu ne régneras plus sur Israël.”
27 As Samuel turned to go away, Saul laid hold upon the skirt of his robe, and it tore.	27 Comme Samuel repartait chez lui, Saül voulut le retenir par le pan de son manteau qui se déchira.
28 And Samuel said to him, "The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day, and has given it to a neighbor of yours, who is better than you.	28 Alors Samuel lui dit: “Aujourd’hui Yahvé t’a arraché la royauté d’Israël, il l’a donnée à ton prochain qui est meilleur que toi.
29 And also the Glory of Israel will not lie or repent; for he is not a man, that he should repent."	29 Celui qui est la Gloire d’Israël ne peut ni mentir ni se repentir, il n’est pas un homme pour se repentir.”
30 Then he said, "I have sinned; yet honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, that I may worship the LORD your God."	30 Saül dit: “C’est vrai, j’ai péché. Mais tu ne vas pas m’humilier devant les anciens de mon peuple et devant Israël. Reviens avec moi, que j’aille me prosterner devant Yahvé ton Dieu.”
31 So Samuel turned back after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD.	31 Samuel revint donc avec Saül, et Saül se prosterna devant Yahvé.
32 Then Samuel said, "Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites." And Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, "Surely the bitterness of death is past."	32 Puis Samuel dit: “Amenez-moi Agag, roi d’Amalec.” Et Agag arriva tout tremblant; il s’était dit: “L’amertume de la mort s’est sûrement éloignée.”
33 And Samuel said, "As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women." And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.	33 Mais Samuel lui dit: “Ton épée a privé des femmes de leurs enfants, et ce sera pareil pour ta mère: elle restera sans enfant.” Et Samuel mit en pièces Agag en présence de Yahvé, à Guilgal.
34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house in Gibe-ah of Saul.	34 Samuel s’en retourna à Rama, tandis que Saül regagnait sa maison à Guibéa de Saül.
35 And Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.	35 Samuel ne revit plus Saül jusqu’au jour de sa mort, il était triste à cause de Saül car Yahvé regrettait de l’avoir établi comme roi sur Israël.
