1 Saul was . . . years old when he began to reign; and he reigned . . . and two years over Israel.	1 - Saul era figlio di un anno quando incominciò a regnare e regnò due anni sopra Israele.
2 Saul chose three thousand men of Israel; two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibe-ah of Benjamin; the rest of the people he sent home, every man to his tent.	2 Saul si scelse tremila Israeliti, di cui duemila stavano con lui in Macmas e sul monte di Betel e mille con Gionata in Gabaa di Beniamino, e rimandò il resto del popolo, ognuno alle sue tende.
3 Jonathan defeated the garrison of the Philistines which was at Geba; and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, "Let the Hebrews hear."	3 Avendo Gionata percossa la guarnigione dei Filistei, che stava in Gabaa, ed essendo la cosa venuta a cognizione dei Filistei, Saul fece sonar la tromba per tutto il paese e dire: «Lo sappiano gli Ebrei»:
4 And all Israel heard it said that Saul had defeated the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel had become odious to the Philistines. And the people were called out to join Saul at Gilgal.	4 e tutto Israele udì questa notizia: «Saul ha battuto la guarnigione dei Filistei»; e Israele si levò contro i Filistei e acclamò a Saul in Galgala.
5 And the Philistines mustered to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and troops like the sand on the seashore in multitude; they came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of Beth-aven.	5 Anche i Filistei si riunirono per combattere contro Israele con trentamila carri, seimila cavalieri e gente numerosa come la rena sul lido del mare. E salendo si accamparono a Macmas ad oriente di Betaven.
6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in straits (for the people were hard pressed), the people hid themselves in caves and in holes and in rocks and in tombs and in cisterns,	6 Come si accòrsero però gli Israeliti d'essere messi così alle strette, (perchè il popolo si era perso di animo), si nascosero nelle spelonche e nelle grotte, fra le rocce, negli antri e nelle cisterne;
7 or crossed the fords of the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.	7 mentre altri Ebrei passarono al di là del Giordano nel paese di Gad e di Galaad, e ancorchè Saul fosse ancora in Galgala, tutto il popolo che lo accompagnava era impaurito.
8 He waited seven days, the time appointed by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him.	8 [Saul] attese sette giorni secondo l'ordine di Samuele, ma Samuele non venne in Galgala e il popolo si sbandò da Saul.
9 So Saul said, "Bring the burnt offering here to me, and the peace offerings." And he offered the burnt offering.	9 Disse perciò Saul: «Portatemi l'olocausto e l'ostia pacifica». E offrì l'olocausto.
10 As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him and salute him.	10 Mentre finiva di immolare l'olocausto giunse Samuele, e Saul gli mosse incontro per salutarlo.
11 Samuel said, "What have you done?" And Saul said, "When I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines had mustered at Michmash,	11 Ma, Samuele gli disse: «Che hai tu fatto?». Saul rispose: «Avendo visto che il popolo si sbandava da me e che tu non venivi nel giorno stabilito, e d'altronde trovandosi i Filistei riuniti in Macmas,
12 I said, Now the Philistines will come down upon me at Gilgal, and I have not entreated the favor of the LORD'; so I forced myself, and offered the burnt offering."	12 dissi: - Ora i Filistei scenderanno contro di me in Galgala ed io non ho ancora placato il Signore. - Costretto quindi dalla necessità, offrii l'olocausto».
13 And Samuel said to Saul, "You have done foolishly; you have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which he commanded you; for now the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel for ever.	13 Allora Samuele disse a Saul: «Tu hai agito stoltamente, e non hai osservato i comandi che il Signore Dio tuo ti aveva dato. Se tu non avessi fatto ciò, il Signore avrebbe consolidato per sempre il tuo regno sopra Israele;
14 But now your kingdom shall not continue; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart; and the LORD has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you."	14 invece il regno tuo non durerà in avvenire. Il Signore s'è cercato un uomo secondo il cuor suo ed il Signore gli ha comandato di essere capo del suo popolo poichè tu non hai ubbidito a ciò che il Signore aveva comandato».
15 And Samuel arose, and went up from Gilgal to Gibe-ah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people who were present with him, about six hundred men.	15 Si levò quindi Samuele e salì da Galgala a Gabaa di Beniamino. Quel che era restato del popolo salì poi dietro a Saul per incontrarsi col popolo [dei Filistei] che assalivano quei che salivano da Galgala a Gabaa, sul colle di Beniamino. Saul passò quindi in rassegna la sua gente che si trovava ancora con lui ed era di circa seicento uomini.
16 And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who were present with them, stayed in Geba of Benjamin; but the Philistines encamped in Michmash.	16 Saul, Gionata suo figlio e la gente che si trovò con essi stavano adunque in Gabaa di Beniamino, mentre i Filistei si stabilirono in Macmas.
17 And raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies; one company turned toward Ophrah, to the land of Shual,	17 Ora dal campo dei Filistei erano uscite tre bande per fare delle scorrerie; una s'era incamminata per la via di Efra, verso la terra di Saul;
18 another company turned toward Beth-horon, and another company turned toward the border that looks down upon the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness.	18 l'altra prese la via di Betoron, mentre la terza erasi volta verso il confine che sovrasta dalla parte del deserto alla valle di Seboim.
19 Now there was no smith to be found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines said, "Lest the Hebrews make themselves swords or spears";	19 Ora in tutto il paese d'Israele non eravi fabbro ferraio, avendo i Filistei avuto questa precauzione perchè non potessero gli Ebrei fabbricarsi spade o lance.
20 but every one of the Israelites went down to the Philistines to sharpen his plowshare, his mattock, his axe, or his sickle;	20 E tutto Israele scendeva dai Filistei per farsi affilare il vomere, la zappa, la scure e il sarchiello.
21 and the charge was a pim for the plowshares and for the mattocks, and a third of a shekel for sharpening the axes and for setting the goads.	21 Erano perciò spuntati e il vomere e le zappe e i tridenti e le scuri, e perfino i pugnali avevan bisogno di essere affilati;
22 So on the day of the battle there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people with Saul and Jonathan; but Saul and Jonathan his son had them.	22 e quando venne il giorno della battaglia non si trovò tra le mani del popolo che era con Saul e Gionata nè spada, nè lancia, fatta eccezione di Saul e di Gionata suo figlio.
23 And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash.	23 Frattanto un presidio dei Filistei uscì per andare verso Macmas.
