1 Now Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother's kinsmen and said to them and to the whole clan of his mother's family,	1 - Abimelec, figlio di Jerobaal, se ne andò in Sichem a trovare i fratelli della madre sua e a loro e a tutta la parentela della casa del padre di sua madre disse:
2 "Say in the ears of all the citizens of Shechem, 'Which is better for you, that all seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal rule over you, or that one rule over you?' Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh."	2 «Parlate a tutti gli uomini di Sichem e chiedete: - È miglior cosa per voi avere settanta padroni, quanti sono i figli di Jerobaal, o averne uno solo? - Parimenti considerate che io sono vostro osso e carne vostra».
3 And his mother's kinsmen spoke all these words on his behalf in the ears of all the men of Shechem; and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, "He is our brother."	3 I fratelli della madre parlaron di lui a tutti gli uomini di Sichem, ripetendo tutte quelle parole e disposero gli animi loro a favore di Abimelec, dicendo: «Egli è nostro fratello».
4 And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, who followed him.	4 E gli diedero settanta sicli d'argento tolti dal santuario di Baalberit. Con essi egli assoldò uomini miserabili e vagabondi, i quali lo seguirono.
5 And he went to his father's house at Ophrah, and slew his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, upon one stone; but Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself.	5 Venuto nella casa di suo padre in Efra, Abimelec uccise i suoi fratelli, i settanta figli di Jerobaal sopra una sol pietra; soltanto Joatam, il più piccolo dei figli di Jerobaal, scampò perchè s'era nascosto.
6 And all the citizens of Shechem came together, and all Beth-millo, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar at Shechem.	6 Riunitisi poi tutti gli uomini di Sichem e tutte le famiglie della città di Mello, se ne andarono per proclamare re Abimelec, presso la quercia che stava in Sichem.
7 When it was told to Jotham, he went and stood on the top of Mount Gerizim, and cried aloud and said to them, "Listen to me, you men of Shechem, that God may listen to you.	7 Quando Joatam fu informato della cosa, andò a porsi sulla sommità del monte Garizim e a voce alta gridò e disse: «Ascoltatemi, o uomini di Sichem, e così Dio vi ascolti.
8 The trees once went forth to anoint a king over them; and they said to the olive tree, 'Reign over us.'	8 Gli alberi andarono per ungere un re [che regnasse] sopra di loro. Dissero all'olivo: - Regna sopra di noi. -
9 But the olive tree said to them, 'Shall I leave my fatness, by which gods and men are honored, and go to sway over the trees?'	9 Ma esso rispose: - Posso io lasciare la mia pinguedine, della quale fanno uso gli dèi e gli uomini, per venire ad essere innalzato al di sopra degli altri alberi? -
10 And the trees said to the fig tree, 'Come you, and reign over us.'	10 Dissero allora gli alberi all'albero del fico: - Vieni tu a regnare sopra di noi.
11 But the fig tree said to them, 'Shall I leave my sweetness and my good fruit, and go to sway over the trees?'	11 Ma questi rispose: - Posso io lasciare la mia dolcezza e i miei soavissimi frutti e andare ad essere innalzato al di sopra di tutti gli altri alberi? -
12 And the trees said to the vine, 'Come you, and reign over us.'	12 Gli alberi si rivolsero quindi alla vite e dissero: - Vieni, e regna sopra di noi.
13 But the vine said to them, 'Shall I leave my wine which cheers gods and men, and go to sway over the trees?'	13 Ma essa rispose: - Posso io lasciare il mio vino, che rallegra Dio e gli uomini per essere innalzata al di sopra degli altri alberi? -
14 Then all the trees said to the bramble, 'Come you, and reign over us.'	14 Allora tutti gli alberi dissero al pruno: - Vieni e regna sopra di noi. -
15 And the bramble said to the trees, 'If in good faith you are anointing me king over you, then come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, let fire come out of the bramble and devour the cedars of Lebanon.'	15 Al che esso rispose: - Se veramente voi mi volete costituire vostro re, venite a riposarvi sotto la mia ombra; ma se non volete, esca dal pruno un fuoco e divori i cedri del Libano. -
16 "Now therefore, if you acted in good faith and honor when you made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him as his deeds deserved--	16 Ora adunque [vedete] se con rettitudine e senza colpa voi avete eletto vostro re Abimelec, e se avete bene operato con Jerobaal e colla casa di lui, e se avete contraccambiato i benefici di chi combattè per voi
17 for my father fought for you, and risked his life, and rescued you from the hand of Midian;	17 ed espose la sua vita al pericolo per strapparvi dalle mani di Madian,
18 and you have risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, seventy men on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the citizens of Shechem, because he is your kinsman--	18 mentre voi ora insorgereste contro la casa del padre e ne uccideste i figli in numero di settanta sopra una pietra, e avete eletto re degli abitanti di Sichem, Abimelec, figlio di una serva di Gedeone, perchè è vostro fratello.
19 if you then have acted in good faith and honor with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you;	19 Quindi, se avete agito con rettitudine e senza alcuna colpa con Jerobaal e colla casa di lui, ora godetevi Abimelec ed egli goda di voi;
20 but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the citizens of Shechem, and Beth-millo; and let fire come out from the citizens of Shechem, and from Beth-millo, and devour Abimelech."	20 ma se avete agito con perversità, esca il fuoco da lui e consumi gli abitanti di Sichem e la città di Mello; esca il fuoco dagli uomini di Sichem e dalla città di Mello e divori Abimelec».
21 And Jotham ran away and fled, and went to Beer and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.	21 Avendo detto ciò fuggì e si ricoverò da Bera, e abitò colà per timore di Abimelec suo fratello.
22 Abimelech ruled over Israel three years.	22 Abimelec pertanto regnò sopra Israele per tre anni.
23 And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech;	23 Poi il Signore mandò un pessimo spirito tra Abimelec e gli abitanti di Sichem, i quali cominciarono a detestarlo
24 that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, who slew them, and upon the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to slay his brothers.	24 e a incolpare Abimelec, loro fratello, e gli altri principi di Sichem che l'avevano aiutato, del delitto dell'uccisione dei settanta figli di Jerobaal e dello spargimento del loro sangue.
25 And the men of Shechem put men in ambush against him on the mountain tops, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way; and it was told Abimelech.	25 Gli tesero quindi insidie sulla sommità dei monti, e mentre ne attendevano la venuta esercitavano il brigantaggio contro quelli che passavano, spogliandoli di quanto aveano; la qual cosa fu annunziata ad Abimelec.
26 And Gaal the son of Ebed moved into Shechem with his kinsmen; and the men of Shechem put confidence in him.	26 Gaal figlio di Obed venne coi suoi fratelli e passò in Sichem. Incoraggiati dalla sua venuta, gli abitanti di Sichem
27 And they went out into the field, and gathered the grapes from their vineyards and trod them, and held festival, and went into the house of their god, and ate and drank and reviled Abimelech.	27 uscirono nelle campagne devastando le vigne e calpestando le uve, e abbandonandosi a danze e a canti entrarono nel tempio del loro dio e si misero tra le vivande e i vini a maledire Abimelec,
28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, "Who is Abimelech, and who are we of Shechem, that we should serve him? Did not the son of Jerubbaal and Zebul his officer serve the men of Hamor the father of Shechem? Why then should we serve him?	28 mentre Gaal figlio di Obed gridava: «Chi è Abimelec e chi è Sichem, perchè noi abbiamo a servire a lui? Non è egli il figlio di Jerobaal, e Zebul suo servo non fu costituito principe sopra gli uomini di Emor, padre di Sichem? Perchè lo serviremo?
29 Would that this people were under my hand! then I would remove Abimelech. I would say to Abimelech, 'Increase your army, and come out.'"	29 Oh, se alcuno desse in mio potere questo popolo, io torrei di mezzo Abimelec!». Fu detto perciò ad Abimelec: «Riunisci un forte esercito e vieni».
30 When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled.	30 Zebul, governatore della città, a sentire le parole di Gaal, figlio di Obed, si adirò fortemente
31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech at Arumah, saying, "Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his kinsmen have come to Shechem, and they are stirring up the city against you.	31 e mandò di nascosto a dire ad Abimelec: «Ecco Gaal, figlio di Obed, giunse co' suoi fratelli in Sichem e solleva la città contro di te.
32 Now therefore, go by night, you and the men that are with you, and lie in wait in the fields.	32 Sorgi pertanto durante la notte e insieme colla gente che è teco nasconditi nella campagna
33 Then in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, rise early and rush upon the city; and when he and the men that are with him come out against you, you may do to them as occasion offers."	33 e sul far del giorno, al sorger del sole, irrompi nella città; quando egli uscirà contro di te colla sua gente fa' di lui quello che puoi».
34 And Abimelech and all the men that were with him rose up by night, and laid wait against Shechem in four companies.	34 Si levò quindi Abimelec con tutto il suo esercito durante la notte e pose un'imboscata presso Sichem in quattro luoghi diversi.
35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city; and Abimelech and the men that were with him rose from the ambush.	35 Quando uscì Gaal figlio di Obed e si venne a mettere alla porta della città, si levò Abimelec e tutto l'esercito con lui dall'imboscata ov'era.
36 And when Gaal saw the men, he said to Zebul, "Look, men are coming down from the mountain tops!" And Zebul said to him, "You see the shadow of the mountains as if they were men."	36 Al veder tanta gente, Gaal disse a Zebul: «Vedi quanta gente scende dai monti?». Al che egli rispose: «Son le ombre delle montagne che tu vedi e ti sembrano teste di uomini e t'inganni».
37 Gaal spoke again and said, "Look, men are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming from the direction of the Diviners' Oak."	37 Di nuovo Gaal disse: «Un vero popolo discende dalla sommità del paese ed una schiera s'avanza per la via che va verso la quercia».
38 Then Zebul said to him, "Where is your mouth now, you who said, 'Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?' Are not these the men whom you despised? Go out now and fight with them."	38 Gli rispose Zebul: «Dov'è ora quella bocca che diceva: - Chi è Abimelec da doverlo servire - ? Non è questo il popolo che tu disprezzavi? Esci e combatti contro di lui».
39 And Gaal went out at the head of the men of Shechem, and fought with Abimelech.	39 Andò quindi Gaal alla vista di tutto il popolo di Sichem a combattere contro Abimelec,
40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him; and many fell wounded, up to the entrance of the gate.	40 il quale lo inseguì, mentre fuggiva, e lo costrinse a entrare in città; e molti dei suoi caddero fin sotto alla porta della città.
41 And Abimelech dwelt at Arumah; and Zebul drove out Gaal and his kinsmen, so that they could not live on at Shechem.	41 Abimelec si stabilì in Ruma, mentre Zebul scacciò Gaal e i suoi compagni dalla città, nè più permise che avesse a soggiornarvi.
42 On the following day the men went out into the fields. And Abimelech was told.	42 Il giorno seguente il popolo uscì nelle campagne ed essendo ciò annunciato ad Abimelec,
43 He took his men and divided them into three companies, and laid wait in the fields; and he looked and saw the men coming out of the city, and he rose against them and slew them.	43 prese egli il suo esercito, lo divise in tre schiere tendendo insidie nei campi. Al vedere poi che il popolo usciva dalla città sorse e irruppe contro di loro,
44 Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city, while the two companies rushed upon all who were in the fields and slew them.	44 e colla sua schiera assalì e strinse d'assedio la città mentre le altre due schiere inseguivano gli avversari dispersi per la campagna.
45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day; he took the city, and killed the people that were in it; and he razed the city and sowed it with salt.	45 Durante tutta la giornata Abimelec strinse d'assedio la città, e presala ne uccise gli abitanti e la distrusse così da spargervi sopra il sale.
46 When all the people of the Tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the stronghold of the house of El-berith.	46 All'udir ciò quei che abitavano nella torre di Sichem entrarono nel santuario del loro dio Berit, dove aveano fatto con lui alleanza e da questa il luogo, che era assai fortificato, avea preso il nome.
47 Abimelech was told that all the people of the Tower of Shechem were gathered together.	47 Abimelec, inteso che gli uomini si erano tutti insieme riuniti nelle torri di Sichem,
48 And Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the men that were with him; and Abimelech took an axe in his hand, and cut down a bundle of brushwood, and took it up and laid it on his shoulder. And he said to the men that were with him, "What you have seen me do, make haste to do, as I have done."	48 ascese sul monte Selmon con tutta la sua gente e, presa una scure, tagliò un ramo d'albero e postoselo sulle spalle, disse ai compagni: «Fate presto anche voi ciò che mi vedete fare».
49 So every one of the people cut down his bundle and following Abimelech put it against the stronghold, and they set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the Tower of Shechem also died, about a thousand men and women.	49 Avendo anch'essi tagliato rami dagli alberi, seguirono il loro capo, ne circondarono il luogo fortificato e li accesero; per il che avvenne che per il fumo e per il fuoco morissero tra uomini e donne mille abitanti della torre di Sichem.
50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez, and encamped against Thebez, and took it.	50 Quindi Abimelec partito di là, venne alla città di Tebe e la strinse d'assedio col suo esercito.
51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and all the people of the city fled to it, all the men and women, and shut themselves in; and they went to the roof of the tower.	51 Eravi in mezzo alla città un'alta torre, nella quale s'eran rifugiati uomini e donne e tutti i principi della città, e dopo aver chiusa ben bene la porta, se ne stavano in difesa sul tetto della torre.
52 And Abimelech came to the tower, and fought against it, and drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire.	52 Accostatosi Abimelec alla torre, combatteva da forte e cercava di avvicinarsi alla porta per appiccarvi il fuoco.
53 And a certain woman threw an upper millstone upon Abimelech's head, and crushed his skull.	53 Ma una donna gettò abbasso un pezzo di macina da molino, che colpì Abimelec nel capo e gli spezzò il cranio.
54 Then he called hastily to the young man his armor-bearer, and said to him, "Draw your sword and kill me, lest men say of me, 'A woman killed him.'" And his young man thrust him through, and he died.	54 Questi allora, chiamato in fretta il suo scudiero, gli disse: «Sfodera la spada e uccidimi, affinchè non si dica che fui ucciso da una donna». Egli eseguì il comando e l'uccise.
55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, they departed every man to his home.	55 Morto Abimelec, tutti quelli che erano con lui se ne tornarono alle loro case
56 Thus God requited the crime of Abimelech, which he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers;	56 e Dio rese ad Abimelec il male che aveva fatto contro suo padre coll'aver ucciso i suoi settanta fratelli.
57 and God also made all the wickedness of the men of Shechem fall back upon their heads, and upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.	57 Anche sopra i Sichemiti venne la maledizione di Joatam figlio di Jerobaal in punizione del male che aveano fatto.
