1 Then all the people of Israel came out, from Dan to Beer-sheba, including the land of Gilead, and the congregation assembled as one man to the LORD at Mizpah.	1 - Uscirono quindi tutti i figli d'Israele e da Dan fino a Bersabee e dalla terra di Galaad si raccolsero insieme, come un solo uomo, e vennero al Signore in Masfa.
2 And the chiefs of all the people, of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand men on foot that drew the sword.	2 Tutti i capi del popolo e tutte le tribù d'Israele si raccolsero in quell'assemblea del popolo di Dio. Erano quattrocentomila fanti in assetto di guerra.
3 (Now the Benjaminites heard that the people of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.) And the people of Israel said, "Tell us, how was this wickedness brought to pass?"	3 E i figli di Beniamino non ignorarono che i figli d'Israele eran saliti a Masfa. Interrogato il levita, marito della donna uccisa, come fosse stato perpetrato un tanto delitto,
4 And the Levite, the husband of the woman who was murdered, answered and said, "I came to Gibe-ah that belongs to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to spend the night.	4 rispose: «Ero giunto in Gabaa di Beniamino con la moglie mia e mi ero fermato colà,
5 And the men of Gibe-ah rose against me, and beset the house round about me by night; they meant to kill me, and they ravished my concubine, and she is dead.	5 quando la notte gli uomini di quella città circondarono la casa, dove mi trovavo, volendo uccidere me, e in preda a un incredibile furore di libidine, violentarono la moglie mia, che finalmente morì.
6 And I took my concubine and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel; for they have committed abomination and wantonness in Israel.	6 Io la presi, la feci a pezzi e ne mandai le parti in tutti i confini dei vostri possedimenti, perchè giammai era stato commesso in Israele un tale delitto e una così grande infamia.
7 Behold, you people of Israel, all of you, give your advice and counsel here."	7 Voi siete qui tutti, o figli d'Israele; decretate ciò che dovete fare».
8 And all the people arose as one man, saying, "We will not any of us go to his tent, and none of us will return to his house.	8 E tutto il popolo, balzato in piedi, ad una voce rispose: «Non ritorneremo alle nostre tende nè alcuno porrà piede in casa sua;
9 But now this is what we will do to Gibe-ah: we will go up against it by lot,	9 ma contro Gabaa questo faremo tutti insieme.
10 and we will take ten men of a hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred of a thousand, and a thousand of ten thousand, to bring provisions for the people, that when they come they may requite Gibe-ah of Benjamin, for all the wanton crime which they have committed in Israel."	10 Si eleggano dieci uomini su cento fra tutte le tribù d'Israele, e cento su mille, e mille su diecimila per portare le vettovaglie all'esercito e poter così combattere contro Gabaa di Beniamino e infliggere la meritata vendetta di un tanto delitto».
11 So all the men of Israel gathered against the city, united as one man.	11 Così tutti i figli d'Israele si raccolsero contro quella città, quasi fossero un solo uomo e non avessero che un solo pensiero e una sola decisione.
12 And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, "What wickedness is this that has taken place among you?	12 Mandarono quindi messaggeri a tutte le tribù di Beniamino per chiedere: «Come mai è stato tra voi commesso un tale delitto?
13 Now therefore give up the men, the base fellows in Gibe-ah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel." But the Benjaminites would not listen to the voice of their brethren, the people of Israel.	13 Dateci gli uomini di Gabaa che perpetrarono quell'infamia e colla loro morte sia tolto da Israele il male commesso». Ma essi non vollero ascoltare l'imposizione dei loro fratelli, figli d'Israele;
14 And the Benjaminites came together out of the cities to Gibe-ah, to go out to battle against the people of Israel.	14 anzi da tutte le città che appartenevano al loro territorio convennero uomini in Gabaa per portare a questi aiuto e combatter contro tutto il popolo d'Israele.
15 And the Benjaminites mustered out of their cities on that day twenty-six thousand men that drew the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibe-ah, who mustered seven hundred picked men.	15 E si trovò che venticinquemila furono i figli di Beniamino abili a maneggiare la spada, oltre gli abitanti di Gabaa
16 Among all these were seven hundred picked men who were left-handed; every one could sling a stone at a hair, and not miss.	16 che avevano settecento uomini valorosissimi, capaci di combattere colla sinistra e colla destra e così valenti nel gettare colle fionde le pietre verso la mira, che potevano colpire anche un capello senza che la pietra fosse sviata da una parte o dall'altra.
17 And the men of Israel, apart from Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand men that drew sword; all these were men of war.	17 Quanto agli uomini d'Israele, ad esclusione dei figli di Beniamino, si trovò essere quattrocentomila quelli che sapevano maneggiare la spada e che erano pronti a combattere.
18 The people of Israel arose and went up to Bethel, and inquired of God, "Which of us shall go up first to battle against the Benjaminites?" And the LORD said, "Judah shall go up first."	18 Levatisi, vennero alla casa di Dio, vale a dire a Silo, e consultarono Iddio, dicendo: «Chi sarà nell'esercito nostro il capo della battaglia contro i figli di Beniamino?». E il Signore rispose: «Sia Giuda il vostro capo».
19 Then the people of Israel rose in the morning, and encamped against Gibe-ah.	19 Tosto i figli d'Israele si levarono di buon mattino e si accamparono presso Gabaa,
20 And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel drew up the battle line against them at Gibe-ah.	20 e di là avanzandosi per combattere contro [i figli di] Beniamino, cominciarono ad espugnare la città.
21 The Benjaminites came out of Gibe-ah, and felled to the ground on that day twenty-two thousand men of the Israelites.	21 Ma usciti i figli di Beniamino da Gabaa uccisero in quel giorno ventiduemila uomini dei figli d'Israele.
22 But the people, the men of Israel, took courage, and again formed the battle line in the same place where they had formed it on the first day.	22 Di nuovo i figli d'Israele, confidando nella loro forza e nel numero, si schierarono nello stesso luogo dove prima aveano combattuto;
23 And the people of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until the evening; and they inquired of the LORD, "Shall we again draw near to battle against our brethren the Benjaminites?" And the LORD said, "Go up against them."	23 portandosi però prima a piangere dinanzi al Signore fino a notte, e lo consultarono, dicendo: «Debbo continuar a combattere contro i figli di Beniamino, miei fratelli o no?». Al che egli rispose: «Salite contro di loro e date battaglia».
24 So the people of Israel came near against the Benjaminites the second day.	24 Mentre i figli d'Israele il giorno seguente movevano per combattere contro i figli di Beniamino,
25 And Benjamin went against them out of Gibe-ah the second day, and felled to the ground eighteen thousand men of the people of Israel; all these were men who drew the sword.	25 questi irruppero fuori dalle porte di Gabaa e movendo ad essi incontro operarono una tale strage da stendere al suolo diciottomila di quei combattenti.
26 Then all the people of Israel, the whole army, went up and came to Bethel and wept; they sat there before the LORD, and fasted that day until evening, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.	26 Vennero perciò tutti i figli d'Israele alla casa di Dio e, postisi a sedere, piansero al cospetto del Signore; poi in quel giorno digiunarono fino a sera e offerti sacrifici e vittime pacifiche al Signore,
27 And the people of Israel inquired of the LORD (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,	27 lo interrogarono intorno alla sorte ad essi riservata. In quel tempo l'arca dell'alleanza di Dio era colà
28 and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, ministered before it in those days), saying, "Shall we yet again go out to battle against our brethren the Benjaminites, or shall we cease?" And the LORD said, "Go up; for tomorrow I will give them into your hand."	28 e Finees figlio di Eleazaro figlio di Aronne presiedeva al tabernacolo. Consultarono quindi il Signore e chiesero: «Dobbiamo un'altra volta muovere alla pugna contro i figli di Beniamino, nostri fratelli, o astenercene?». E il Signore rispose ad essi: «Salite, poichè domani li darò in vostra balìa».
29 So Israel set men in ambush round about Gibe-ah.	29 E i figli d'Israele posero agguati intorno alla città di Gabaa e
30 And the people of Israel went up against the Benjaminites on the third day, and set themselves in array against Gibe-ah, as at other times.	30 per la terza volta come per la prima e per la seconda misero in campo l'esercito contro Beniamino.
31 And the Benjaminites went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and as at other times they began to smite and kill some of the people, in the highways, one of which goes up to Bethel and the other to Gibe-ah, and in the open country, about thirty men of Israel.	31 Ma anche i figli di Beniamino irruppero audacemente fuori dalla città e inseguirono a lungo gli avversari postisi in fuga cosicchè ne ferirono come il primo e il secondo giorno e fecero a pezzi quelli che prendevano la fuga per le due strade, conducenti una a Betel e l'altra a Gabaa e ne abbatterono circa trenta
32 And the Benjaminites said, "They are routed before us, as at the first." But the men of Israel said, "Let us flee, and draw them away from the city to the highways."	32 pensando che come al solito fossero sconfitti. Ma quelli che avevano simulato la fuga eransi proposti di allontanarli dalla città e di condurli, simulando la fuga, sui sentieri sopra indicati.
33 And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and set themselves in array at Baal-tamar; and the men of Israel who were in ambush rushed out of their place west of Geba.	33 Allora tutti i figli di Israele, levatisi dal posto dove si trovavano, si spinsero in ordine di battaglia verso il luogo chiamato Baaltamar, e quelli che erano in agguato intorno alla città cominciarono a poco a poco a scoprirsi
34 And there came against Gibe-ah ten thousand picked men out of all Israel, and the battle was hard; but the Benjaminites did not know that disaster was close upon them.	34 e a procedere verso la porta occidentale di essa. Frattanto altri diecimila uomini, scelti da tutto Israele, provocarono gli abitanti della città a combattere e la battaglia si fece asprissima contro i figli di Beniamino, i quali non si rendevano conto che da ogni parte li aspettava la morte.
35 And the LORD defeated Benjamin before Israel; and the men of Israel destroyed twenty-five thousand one hundred men of Benjamin that day; all these were men who drew the sword.	35 Il Signore li sconfisse al cospetto dei figli di Israele, i quali ne uccisero in quel giorno venticinquemila e cento uomini tutti guerrieri e atti a maneggiare la spada.
36 So the Benjaminites saw that they were defeated. The men of Israel gave ground to Benjamin, because they trusted to the men in ambush whom they had set against Gibe-ah.	36 Allora i figli di Beniamino, vistisi soccombenti, cominciarono a fuggire e i figli di Israele a veder ciò facilitarono la fuga, perchè venissero agli agguati preparati accanto alla città.
37 And the men in ambush made haste and rushed upon Gibe-ah; the men in ambush moved out and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.	37 Usciti allora dai nascondigli, mentre Beniamino volgeva le spalle, entrarono nella città, e la passarono a fil di spada.
38 Now the appointed signal between the men of Israel and the men in ambush was that when they made a great cloud of smoke rise up out of the city	38 I figli d'Israele avevano dato a quei che erano posti in agguato il segnale, che presa la città, vi dessero fuoco per dimostrare col fumo che sarebbe salito in alto che la città era presa.
39 the men of Israel should turn in battle. Now Benjamin had begun to smite and kill about thirty men of Israel; they said, "Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle."	39 Al veder ciò, i figli d'Israele impegnati nel combattere i Beniamiti (i quali credevano che essi fuggissero e perciò li inseguivano con più forza, dopo aver ucciso trenta uomini del loro esercito),
40 But when the signal began to rise out of the city in a column of smoke, the Benjaminites looked behind them; and behold, the whole of the city went up in smoke to heaven.	40 al vedere dunque la colonna di fumo salire dalla città (anche Beniamino guardando indietro s'accòrse che la città era presa e le fiamme salivano in alto),
41 Then the men of Israel turned, and the men of Benjamin were dismayed, for they saw that disaster was close upon them.	41 quelli che prima aveano simulato la fuga si voltarono indietro e resistettero validamente. Visto ciò, i figli di Beniamino si volsero in fuga
42 Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel in the direction of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them, and those who came out of the cities destroyed them in the midst of them.	42 e presero la via del deserto, avendo sempre alle spalle i loro avversari. Ma anche quelli che avevano dato fuoco alla città vennero loro incontro
43 Cutting down the Benjaminites, they pursued them and trod them down from Nohah as far as opposite Gibe-ah on the east.	43 e così d'ambedue le parti vennero battuti dai nemici e morirono senza aver scampo. Caddero e furono abbattuti dalla parte orientale della città di Gabaa.
44 Eighteen thousand men of Benjamin fell, all of them men of valor.	44 Quelli che rimasero uccisi in questo stesso luogo furono diciottomila uomini, tutti valorosissimi combattenti.
45 And they turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon; five thousand men of them were cut down in the highways, and they were pursued hard to Gidom, and two thousand men of them were slain.	45 Al vedere ciò i pochi di Beniamino che erano rimasti se ne fuggirono nella solitudine, e vennero alla roccia chiamata Remmon. Anche durante la fuga vennero uccisi altri cinquemila uomini sbandati ed erranti in diverse direzioni; e poichè volevano spingersi oltre furono inseguiti e ne rimasero uccisi altri duemila.
46 So all who fell that day of Benjamin were twenty-five thousand men that drew the sword, all of them men of valor.	46 Così avvenne che, in tutto, quei di Beniamino rimasti caduti nei diversi luoghi furono venticinquemila combattenti e uomini di grande valore.
47 But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, and abode at the rock of Rimmon four months.	47 Di tutti i figli di Beniamino rimasero pertanto seicento uomini soli, i quali, avendo potuto sfuggire e raggiungere il deserto, rimasero alla roccia di Remmon per quattro mesi;
48 And the men of Israel turned back against the Benjaminites, and smote them with the edge of the sword, men and beasts and all that they found. And all the towns which they found they set on fire.	48 mentre i figli di Israele ritornati indietro, uccisero tutto ciò che era restato nella città, dagli uomini fino agli animali e tutte le città e i villaggi di Beniamino furono preda del fuoco divoratore.
