1 What causes wars, and what causes fightings among you? Is it not your passions that are at war in your members?	1 - Donde tra voi le guerre e le liti? Non forse di qui: dalle vostre concupiscenze, che militano nelle vostre membra?
2 You desire and do not have; so you kill. And you covet and cannot obtain; so you fight and wage war. You do not have, because you do not ask.	2 Desiderate, e non avete; uccidete e zelate, e non riuscite ad ottenere; litigate e fate guerra, e non ottenete l'intento, perchè non domandate.
3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.	3 Chiedete e non ottenete, perchè chiedete malamente, per soddisfare i vostri piaceri.
4 Unfaithful creatures! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.	4 O adulteri, non sapete voi che l'amicizia di questo mondo è inimicizia con Dio? Chiunque pertanto vuol essere amico di questo mondo, si fa nemico di Dio.
5 Or do you suppose it is in vain that the scripture says, "He yearns jealously over the spirit which he has made to dwell in us"?	5 Credete forse che la Scrittura dica invano: "Lo Spirito che abita in voi, vi ama con amore geloso"?
6 But he gives more grace; therefore it says, "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."	6 Ed egli ci dà una grazia maggiore. E perciò la Scrittura dice: " Dio resiste ai superbi e dà la grazia agli umili ".
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.	7 Siate dunque soggetti a Dio e resistete al diavolo, ed egli fuggirà da voi.
8 Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you men of double mind.	8 Accostatevi a Dio ed Egli si accosterà a voi. Mondate le mani, o peccatori; e purificate il cuore, o gente di animo doppio.
9 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to dejection.	9 Affliggetevi e siate in duolo e piangete; il vostro riso si cangi in lutto e il gaudio in mestizia.
10 Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you.	10 Umiliatevi nel cospetto del Signore ed Egli vi esalterà.
11 Do not speak evil against one another, brethren. He that speaks evil against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.	11 Fratelli, non parlate male l'uno dell'altro. Chi parla male di un fratello o chi giudica il suo fratello, parla male della legge e giudica la legge. Ora se tu giudichi la legge, non sei più osservatore della legge, sei giudice.
12 There is one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you that you judge your neighbor?	12 Uno solo è il legislatore e il giudice: Colui che può salvare e perdere.
13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and get gain";	13 Ma tu, che giudichi il prossimo, chi sei tu? Suvvia, adesso voi che dite: «Oggi o domani andremo nella tal città e ci staremo un anno a trafficare e guadagnare».
14 whereas you do not know about tomorrow. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.	14 [Dite così voi] che non sapete quel che sarà domani.
15 Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and we shall do this or that."	15 Di fatto cos'è la vita vostra? Un fumo che appare per un momento e poi svanisce. Più giusto è il dire: «Se il Signore vorrà e saremo in vita, faremo questa o quella cosa».
16 As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.	16 Ma ora voi vi vantate nella vostra superbia. Ogni vantarsi a questo modo è cattivo.
17 Whoever knows what is right to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.	17 Chi dunque sa fare il bene e non lo fa, commette peccato.
