Joshua 9

1 When all the kings who were beyond the Jordan in the hill country and in the lowland all along the coast of the Great Sea toward Lebanon, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, heard of this,	1 Udite tali cose, tutti i re al di là del Giordano, nelle montagne, nelle pianure, nei luoghi marittimi, e lungo il lido del Mare Grande, e vicino al Libano, l'Eteo, l'Amorreo, il Cananeo, il Ferezeo, l'Eveo, il Gebuseo,
2 they gathered together with one accord to fight Joshua and Israel.	2 si adunaron tutti insieme per combattere di comune accordo Giosuè e Israele.
3 But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,	3 Ma gli abitanti di Gabaon, sentito quanto Giosuè aveva fatto a Gerico e ad Ai,
4 they on their part acted with cunning, and went and made ready provisions, and took worn-out sacks upon their asses, and wineskins, worn-out and torn and mended,	4 ricorsero all'astuzia, e, presi dei viveri, messi sui loro asini dei sacchi vecchi, degli otri da vino rotti e ricuciti,
5 with worn-out, patched sandals on their feet, and worn-out clothes; and all their provisions were dry and moldy.	5 con calzature molto malandate e piene di rappezzi in segno di vecchiezza, vestiti di abiti logori, portando di più dei pani duri e sbriciolati pel viatico,
6 And they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, "We have come from a far country; so now make a covenant with us."	6 andarono a Giosuè, che allora si trovava nel campo di Galgala, e dissero a lui e a tutto Israele: « Noi veniamo di lontano per far pace con voi ». Ma gli uomini d'Israele, rispondendo loro, dissero:
7 But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, "Perhaps you live among us; then how can we make a covenant with you?"	7 « Potrebbe anch'essere che voi abitiate nella terra che ci è dovuta per sorte, e allora non potremmo far patti con voi ».
8 They said to Joshua, "We are your servants." And Joshua said to them, "Who are you? And where do you come from?"	8 Ed essi dissero a Giosuè: « Siamo tuoi servi ». E Giosuè a loro: « Chi siete voi? E donde siete venuti? »
9 They said to him, "From a very far country your servants have come, because of the name of the LORD your God; for we have heard a report of him, and all that he did in Egypt,	9 Risposero: « I tuoi servi nel Signore Dio tuo son venuti da un paese molto lontano. Avendo udito la fama della potenza del tuo Dio, e quanto egli ha fatto in Egitto,
10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth.	10 e di là dal Giordano ai due re degli Amorrei, Sehon re di Esebon, e Og re di Basan, che stava in Astarot,
11 And our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, 'Take provisions in your hand for the journey, and go to meet them, and say to them, "We are your servants; come now, make a covenant with us."'	11 i nostri anziani e tutti gli abitanti del nostro paese ci han detto: Prendete delle provvisioni per un lunghissimo viaggio, e andate loro incontro e dite: Noi siamo vostri servi: fate alleanza con noi.
12 Here is our bread; it was still warm when we took it from our houses as our food for the journey, on the day we set forth to come to you, but now, behold, it is dry and moldy;	12 Ecco i pani: quando partimmo dalle nostre case per venire a voi, li prendemmo caldi, ma ora son diventati secchi e tutti sbricciolati per la troppa vecchiezza.
13 these wineskins were new when we filled them, and behold, they are burst; and these garments and shoes of ours are worn out from the very long journey."	13 Così questi otri di vino li empiemmo nuovi, ma ora son rotti e scuciti, ed anche le vesti che abbiamo addosso e le calzature che abbiamo ai piedi son logore e quasi consumate per l'immensità del lungo viaggio ».
14 So the men partook of their provisions, and did not ask direction from the LORD.	14 Allora, senza interrogare l'oracolo del Signore, presero dei loro viveri;
15 And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the leaders of the congregation swore to them.	15 e Giosuè fece pace con loro e alleanza e promise di non ucciderli, e ciò fu loro giurato anche dai principi della moltitudine.
16 At the end of three days after they had made a covenant with them, they heard that they were their neighbors, and that they dwelt among them.	16 Ma tre giorni dopo fatta l'alleanza, intesero che abitavano nelle vicinanze e che si sarebbero trovati fra loro.
17 And the people of Israel set out and reached their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Be-eroth, and Kiriath-jearim.	17 I figli d'Israele mossero il campo e al terzo giorno giunsero alle loro città, chiamate Gabaon, Cafìra, Berot e Cariatiarim.
18 But the people of Israel did not kill them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. Then all the congregation murmured against the leaders.	18 E non li uccisero, perchè i principi della moltitudine lo avevan loro giurato in nome del Signore Dio d'Israele; ma tutta la plebe ne mormorò contro i principi,
19 But all the leaders said to all the congregation, "We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we may not touch them.	19 che risposero: « Lo abbiamo giurato nel nome del Signore Dio d'Israele: non possiamo toccarli;
20 This we will do to them, and let them live, lest wrath be upon us, because of the oath which we swore to them."	20 però li tratteremo in questa maniera: li lasceremo vivi, per non eccitare contro di noi l'ira del Signore, spergiurando;
21 And the leaders said to them, "Let them live." So they became hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the congregation, as the leaders had said of them.	21 ma avran la vita a patto che taglino legna e portino acqua per tutta la moltitudine ». Or mentre i principi dicevano queste cose,
22 Joshua summoned them, and he said to them, "Why did you deceive us, saying, 'We are very far from you,' when you dwell among us?	22 Giosuè chiamati i Gabaoniti, disse loro: « Perchè ci avete turpemente ingannati col dire: Noi abitiamo molto lontano, mentre siete in mezzo a noi?
23 Now therefore you are cursed, and some of you shall always be slaves, hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God."	23 Per questo voi sarete sotto la maledizione, e non mancherà mai della vostra stirpe chi tagli legna e porti acqua nella casa del mio Dio ».
24 They answered Joshua, "Because it was told to your servants for a certainty that the LORD your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; so we feared greatly for our lives because of you, and did this thing.	24 Essi risposero: « A noi tuoi servi era stato annunziato che il Signore Dio tuo aveva promesso a Mosè suo servo di dare a voi tutta la terra e di sterminarne tutti gli abitanti, e noi mossi dalla gran paura, per provvedere alle nostre vite, spinti dal vostro terrore, ricorremmo a questo disegno.
25 And now, behold, we are in your hand: do as it seems good and right in your sight to do to us."	25 Ora poi eccoci nelle tue mani: fa a noi quel che ti sembra buono e giusto ».
26 So he did to them, and delivered them out of the hand of the people of Israel; and they did not kill them.	26 Giosuè, facendo come aveva detto, li liberò dalle mani dei figli d'Israele e non permise che fossero uccisi;
27 But Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD, to continue to this day, in the place which he should choose.	27 ma fin da quel giorno li dichiarò a servizio di tutto il popolo e dell'altare del Signore, per tagliar legna e portar acqua nel luogo che il Signore avrebbe scelto, come fanno fino al presente.
