Joshua 5

1 When all the kings of the Amorites that were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites that were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they had crossed over, their heart melted, and there was no longer any spirit in them, because of the people of Israel.	1 Tous les rois des Amorites qui se trouvaient à l’ouest du Jourdain, ainsi que les rois des Cananéens qui se trouvaient près de la mer, apprirent que Yahvé avait mis à sec les eaux du Jourdain devant les Israélites, jusqu’à ce que tout le monde soit passé. Alors ils perdirent courage, et tous furent saisis de panique à l’approche des Israélites.
2 At that time the LORD said to Joshua, "Make flint knives and circumcise the people of Israel again the second time."	2 En ce temps-là Yahvé dit à Josué: “Fais-toi des couteaux de silex pour circoncire de nouveau les Israélites.”
3 So Joshua made flint knives, and circumcised the people of Israel at Gibeath-haaraloth.	3 Josué se fit donc des couteaux de silex et il circoncit les Israélites sur la Colline des Prépuces.
4 And this is the reason why Joshua circumcised them: all the males of the people who came out of Egypt, all the men of war, had died on the way in the wilderness after they had come out of Egypt.	4 Voici pourquoi Josué fit cette circoncision: tout le peuple qui était sorti d’Égypte, tous les mâles, tous les hommes de guerre, étaient morts dans le désert au long de la route, après leur sortie d’Égypte.
5 Though all the people who came out had been circumcised, yet all the people that were born on the way in the wilderness after they had come out of Egypt had not been circumcised.	5 Tout le peuple de la sortie avait été circoncis, mais tous ceux nés dans le désert au long de la route, après la sortie d’Égypte, n’étaient pas circoncis.
6 For the people of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the nation, the men of war that came forth out of Egypt, perished, because they did not hearken to the voice of the LORD; to them the LORD swore that he would not let them see the land which the LORD had sworn to their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.	6 Les Israélites avaient marché quarante ans dans le désert jusqu’à la disparition des hommes de guerre qui étaient sortis d’Égypte, de toute cette génération qui n’avait pas écouté la voix de Yahvé. En effet, Yahvé l’avait juré: il ne leur ferait pas voir le pays qu’il avait promis à leurs pères de nous donner, pays où ruissellent le lait et le miel.
7 So it was their children, whom he raised up in their stead, that Joshua circumcised; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not been circumcised on the way.	7 Mais leurs fils étaient là à leur place et ils étaient incirconcis, car on ne les avait pas circoncis durant la route. Josué les circoncit.
8 When the circumcising of all the nation was done, they remained in their places in the camp till they were healed.	8 Quand fut terminée la circoncision de tout ce peuple, on resta sur place dans le camp jusqu’à la guérison.
9 And the LORD said to Joshua, "This day I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." And so the name of that place is called Gilgal to this day.	9 Yahvé dit alors à Josué: “Aujourd’hui j’ai roulé loin de vous la honte de l’Égypte.” C’est pourquoi on donna à ce lieu le nom qu’il porte encore aujourd’hui: Guilgal.
10 While the people of Israel were encamped in Gilgal they kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at evening in the plains of Jericho.	10 Les Israélites campèrent à Guilgal et, le soir du quatorzième jour du mois, ils célébrèrent la Pâque dans les steppes de Jéricho.
11 And on the morrow after the passover, on that very day, they ate of the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain.	11 Au lendemain de la Pâque, ils mangèrent des produits du pays, des pains sans levain et du grain grillé.
12 And the manna ceased on the morrow, when they ate of the produce of the land; and the people of Israel had manna no more, but ate of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.	12 La manne cessa le surlendemain, vu qu’ils mangeaient des produits du pays. Les Israélites n’eurent plus de manne; à partir de cette année-là ils mangèrent les produits du pays de Canaan.
13 When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man stood before him with his drawn sword in his hand; and Joshua went to him and said to him, "Are you for us, or for our adversaries?"	13 Comme Josué était proche de Jéricho, il leva les yeux et vit un homme debout devant lui, une épée nue à la main. Josué marcha vers lui et lui dit: “Es-tu pour nous ou pour nos ennemis?”
14 And he said, "No; but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come." And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and worshipped, and said to him, "What does my lord bid his servant?"	14 Il répondit: “Non! Je suis le chef de l’armée de Yahvé; à présent j’arrive.” Alors Josué tomba la face contre terre et se prosterna. Puis il lui dit: “Que dit mon Seigneur à son serviteur?”
15 And the commander of the LORD's army said to Joshua, "Put off your shoes from your feet; for the place where you stand is holy." And Joshua did so.	15 Le chef de l’armée de Yahvé répondit à Josué: “Enlève la sandale de ton pied, car le lieu où tu te tiens est un lieu saint.” C’est ce que fit Josué.
