Joshua 3

1 Early in the morning Joshua rose and set out from Shittim, with all the people of Israel; and they came to the Jordan, and lodged there before they passed over.	1 Giosuè adunque alzatosi di notte tempo levò il campo: e partitisi da Setim arrivarono al Giordano egli, e tutti i figliuoli d'Israele; e ivi si fermarono per tre giorni.
2 At the end of three days the officers went through the camp	2 Passati i quali, gli araldi andarono in giro per mezzo agli alloggiamenti,
3 and commanded the people, "When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God being carried by the Levitical priests, then you shall set out from your place and follow it,	3 E principiarono a gridare: Allorché voi vedrete l’arca dell'alleanza del Signore Dio vostro, e i sacerdoti della stirpe di Levi, i quali la portano, voi pure levate il campo, e andate lor dietro:
4 that you may know the way you shall go, for you have not passed this way before. Yet there shall be a space between you and it, a distance of about two thousand cubits; do not come near it."	4 E sia tra voi, e l’arca un intervallo di due mila cubiti: affinchè da lungi veder possiate, e distinguere la strada, per cui dobbiamo passare: perocché voi non l'avete mai fatta: e badate di non appressarvi all’arca.
5 And Joshua said to the people, "Sanctify yourselves; for tomorrow the LORD will do wonders among you."	5 E Giosuè disse al popolo: Santificatevi: perocché domane il Signore farà tra voi cose ammirabili.
6 And Joshua said to the priests, "Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass on before the people." And they took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people.	6 E disse a' sacerdoti: Prendete l’arca del testamento, e andate innanzi al popolo. E questi obbedendo al comando la presero, e si misero in istrada avanti agli altri:
7 And the LORD said to Joshua, "This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.	7 E il Signore disse a Giosuè: Oggi io principierò a innalzarti dinanzi a tutto Israele, affinchè conoscano che siccome io fui con Mosè, così sono anche con te.
8 And you shall command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, 'When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.'"	8 E tu ordina a' sacerdoti, che portan l'arca del testamento, e di' loro: Quando sarete entrati in parte nell'acqua del Giordano, fermatevi lì.
9 And Joshua said to the people of Israel, "Come hither, and hear the words of the LORD your God."	9 E a’ figliuoli d'Israele disse Giosuè: Fatevi dappresso, e udite la parola del Signore Dio vostro.
10 And Joshua said, "Hereby you shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites.	10 E soggiunse: Da questo conoscerete, come il Signore, il Dio vivo è in mezzo a voi, e sterminerà dinanzi a voi il Cananeo, e l'Heteo, l’Heveo, il Pherezeo, il Gergeseo ancora, e il Jebuseo, e l'Amorrheo:
11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is to pass over before you into the Jordan.	11 Ecco che l’arca del testamento del Signore di tutta la terra andrà innanzi a voi per mezzo al Giordano.
12 Now therefore take twelve men from the tribes of Israel, from each tribe a man.	12 Scegliete dodici uomini delle tribù d'Israele, uno per ogni tribù.
13 And when the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan shall be stopped from flowing, and the waters coming down from above shall stand in one heap."	13 E quando i sacerdoti, che portan l'arca del Signore Dio di tutta la terra, avran messi i piedi nelle acque del Giordano, le acque di sotto scorreranno, e se n'andranno: ma quelle che vengono d’insù, si fermeranno ammassate.
14 So, when the people set out from their tents, to pass over the Jordan with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people,	14 II popolo adunque uscì dalle sue tende per passare il Giordano: e i sacerdoti, che portavan l’arca del testamento, andavano innanzi, a lui.
15 and when those who bore the ark had come to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests bearing the ark were dipped in the brink of the water (the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the time of harvest),	15 E quando questi furono entrati nel Giordano, e i loro piedi erano in parte bagnati dall'acqua (ora il Giordano era pieno sino all’orlo delle ripe, essendo il tempo della messe),
16 the waters coming down from above stood and rose up in a heap far off, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan, and those flowing down toward the sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were wholly cut off; and the people passed over opposite Jericho.	16 Si fermarono le acque di sopra in un sol luogo, e gonfiandosi come un monte apparivan da lungi dalla città detta Adom sino al luogo di Sarthan: e quelle di sotto scolarono nel mare della solitudine (detto ora mar Morto), finchè mancarono totalmente.
17 And while all Israel were passing over on dry ground, the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, until all the nation finished passing over the Jordan.	17 Il popolo frattanto camminava verso Gerico, e i sacerdoti che portavan l’arca del testamento del Signore, stavano in ordine sopra l'asciutta terra nel mezzo del Giordano, e tutto il popolo passava pel letto che era a secco.
