Galatians 2

1 Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me.	1 - Appresso, dopo quattordici anni, salii di nuovo a Gerusalemme con Barnaba, preso con me anche Tito.
2 I went up by revelation; and I laid before them (but privately before those who were of repute) the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, lest somehow I should be running or had run in vain.	2 Vi andai in seguito a rivelazione, ed esposi loro il Vangelo quale lo predico ai Gentili, ciò privatamente a quelli che erano più reputati, nel pensiero che io corressi forse o fossi corso invano.
3 But even Titus, who was with me, was not compelled to be circumcised, though he was a Greek.	3 Ma neanche Tito che era con me, essendo Gentile, fu obbligato a circoncidersi;
4 But because of false brethren secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy out our freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage--	4 ciò per via di quegli intrusi falsi fratelli che si ficcaron dentro a insidiare la libertà che noi abbiamo in Cristo Gesù, per ridurci in servitù,
5 to them we did not yield submission even for a moment, that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.	5 ma a costoro neanche per il momento volemmo assoggettarci a cedere affinchè la verità del Vangelo rimanesse integra rispetto a voi.
6 And from those who were reputed to be something (what they were makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality)--those, I say, who were of repute added nothing to me;	6 E da quelli che sembrano essere qualcosa (quali erano una volta, non vuol dir nulla per me: Dio non ha riguardo a persone), questi che sembrano qualcosa non aggiunsero nulla [a quel che io esposi],
7 but on the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, just as Peter had been entrusted with the gospel to the circumcised	7 ma al contrario vedendo che a me fu affidata l'evangelizzazione degl'incirconcisi, così come Pietro ne aveva l'incarico pei circoncisi,
8 (for he who worked through Peter for the mission to the circumcised worked through me also for the Gentiles),	8 (giacchè chi aveva dato energia a Pietro per l'apostolato della circoncisione diè potere anche a me per le genti),
9 and when they perceived the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised;	9 e conosciuta la grazia a me concessa, Giacomo e Cefa e Giovanni, quelli che sono riputati le colonne, porsero a me e a Barnaba le destre a segno di unione e società fra noi, affinchè noi andassimo alle genti, e loro alla circoncisione;
10 only they would have us remember the poor, which very thing I was eager to do.	10 e ci ricordassimo solo dei poveri, ciò appunto che io mi son dato premura di fare.
11 But when Cephas came to Antioch I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.	11 Quando poi venne Cefa in Antiochia, gli resistei in faccia perchè aveva torto.
12 For before certain men came from James, he ate with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party.	12 Difatti prima che venissero alcune persone da parte di Giacomo, mangiava coi Gentili, venute quelle si ritirò e se ne stette in disparte per paura di quei che provenivano dalla circoncisione.
13 And with him the rest of the Jews acted insincerely, so that even Barnabas was carried away by their insincerity.	13 E a tale simulazione di lui consentirono anche gli altri Giudei, sì che anche Barnaba fu trascinato da loro a quella simulazione.
14 But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, "If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?"	14 Or quando io vidi che non camminavano rettamente secondo la verità del Vangelo, dissi a Cefa alla presenza di tutti: «Se tu che sei Giudei vivi da Gentile, non da Giudeo, perchè costringi i Gentili a far come i Giudei?».
15 We ourselves, who are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners,	15 Noi di nascita siamo Giudei, e non peccatori provenienti dai Gentili,
16 yet who know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified.	16 ma sapendo che non è giustificato un uomo dalle opere della Legge, bensì solo per la fede di Gesù Cristo, anche noi abbiamo creduto in Cristo Gesù per essere giustificati in forza della fede in Cristo, e non già in forza della Legge, per la ragione che dalle opere della Legge nessuna persona sarà giustificata.
17 But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not!	17 Se poi procurando d'esser giustificati in Cristo, fossimo trovati anche noi peccatori, si avrebbe a dire dunque che Cristo sia ministro di peccato? Certo che no.
18 But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor.	18 Poichè se le cose che ho distrutto di nuovo le edifico, mi fo da me prevaricatore.
19 For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God.	19 Ma io per la Legge sono morto alla Legge, per vivere a Dio. Sono stato crocifisso con Cristo;
20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.	20 e vivo non più io, ma vive in me Cristo; e quel che vivo nella carne, vivo nella fede che ho nel Figliuol di Dio che mi ha amato e ha dato se stesso per me.
21 I do not nullify the grace of God; for if justification were through the law, then Christ died to no purpose.	21 Io non vo' render vana la grazia di Dio, perchè se la giustizia si avesse già per la Legge, allora Cristo sarebbe morto invano.
