1 Now when Festus had come into his province, after three days he went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea.	1 Trois jours après son arrivée dans la province, Festus monta de Césarée à Jérusalem.
2 And the chief priests and the principal men of the Jews informed him against Paul; and they urged him,	2 Les grands prêtres et les notables juifs se constituèrent devant lui accusateurs de Paul. Lui présentantleur requête
3 asking as a favor to have the man sent to Jerusalem, planning an ambush to kill him on the way.	3 contre celui-ci, ils sollicitaient comme une faveur qu'il fût transféré à Jérusalem; ils préparaient unguet-apens pour le tuer en chemin.
4 Festus replied that Paul was being kept at Caesarea, and that he himself intended to go there shortly.	4 Mais Festus répondit que Paul devait rester en prison à Césarée, que lui-même d'ailleurs allait partirtout de suite.
5 "So," said he, "let the men of authority among you go down with me, and if there is anything wrong about the man, let them accuse him."	5 "Que ceux donc d'entre vous qui ont qualité, dit-il, descendent avec moi et, si cet homme estcoupable en quelque manière, qu'ils le mettent en accusation."
6 When he had stayed among them not more than eight or ten days, he went down to Caesarea; and the next day he took his seat on the tribunal and ordered Paul to be brought.	6 Après avoir passé chez eux huit à dix jours au plus, il descendit à Césarée et, siégeant au tribunal lelendemain, il fit amener Paul.
7 And when he had come, the Jews who had gone down from Jerusalem stood about him, bringing against him many serious charges which they could not prove.	7 Quand celui-ci fut arrivé, les Juifs descendus de Jérusalem l'entourèrent, portant contre lui desaccusations multiples et graves, qu'ils n'étaient pas capables de prouver.
8 Paul said in his defense, "Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar have I offended at all."	8 Paul se défendait: "Je n'ai, disait-il, commis aucune faute contre la Loi des Juifs, ni contre le Temple,ni contre César."
9 But Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor, said to Paul, "Do you wish to go up to Jerusalem, and there be tried on these charges before me?"	9 Voulant faire plaisir aux Juifs, Festus répondit à Paul: "Veux-tu monter à Jérusalem pour y être jugélà-dessus en ma présence?"
10 But Paul said, "I am standing before Caesar's tribunal, where I ought to be tried; to the Jews I have done no wrong, as you know very well.	10 Mais Paul répliqua: "Je suis devant le tribunal de César; c'est là que je dois être jugé. Je n'ai faitaucun tort aux Juifs, tu le sais très bien toi-même.
11 If then I am a wrongdoer, and have committed anything for which I deserve to die, I do not seek to escape death; but if there is nothing in their charges against me, no one can give me up to them. I appeal to Caesar."	11 Mais si je suis réellement coupable, si j'ai commis quelque crime qui mérite la mort, je ne refusepas de mourir. Si, par contre, il n'y a rien de fondé dans les accusations de ces gens-là contre moi, nul n'a le droitde me céder à eux. J'en appelle à César!"
12 Then Festus, when he had conferred with his council, answered, "You have appealed to Caesar; to Caesar you shall go."	12 Alors Festus, après en avoir conféré avec son conseil, répondit: "Tu en appelles à César, tu irasdevant César."
13 Now when some days had passed, Agrippa the king and Bernice arrived at Caesarea to welcome Festus.	13 Quelques jours plus tard, le roi Agrippa et Bérénice arrivèrent à Césarée et vinrent saluer Festus.
14 And as they stayed there many days, Festus laid Paul's case before the king, saying, "There is a man left prisoner by Felix;	14 Comme leur séjour se prolongeait, Festus exposa au roi l'affaire de Paul: "Il y a ici, dit-il, unhomme que Félix a laissé en captivité.
15 and when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews gave information about him, asking for sentence against him.	15 Pendant que j'étais à Jérusalem, les grands prêtres et les anciens des Juifs ont porté plainte à sonsujet, demandant sa condamnation.
16 I answered them that it was not the custom of the Romans to give up any one before the accused met the accusers face to face, and had opportunity to make his defense concerning the charge laid against him.	16 Je leur ai répondu que les Romains n'ont pas l'habitude de céder un homme avant que, ayant étéaccusé, il ait eu ses accusateurs en face de lui et qu'on lui ait donné la possibilité de se défendre contrel'inculpation.
17 When therefore they came together here, I made no delay, but on the next day took my seat on the tribunal and ordered the man to be brought in.	17 Ils sont donc venus ici avec moi, et, sans y apporter aucun délai, dès le lendemain, j'ai siégé à montribunal et fait amener l'homme.
18 When the accusers stood up, they brought no charge in his case of such evils as I supposed;	18 Mis en sa présence, les accusateurs n'ont soulevé aucun grief concernant des forfaits que, pour mapart, j'aurais soupçonnés.
19 but they had certain points of dispute with him about their own superstition and about one Jesus, who was dead, but whom Paul asserted to be alive.	19 Ils avaient seulement avec lui je ne sais quelles contestations touchant leur religion à eux ettouchant un certain Jésus, qui est mort, et que Paul affirme être en vie.
20 Being at a loss how to investigate these questions, I asked whether he wished to go to Jerusalem and be tried there regarding them.	20 Pour moi, embarrassé devant un débat de ce genre, je lui ai demandé s'il voulait aller à Jérusalempour y être jugé là-dessus.
21 But when Paul had appealed to be kept in custody for the decision of the emperor, I commanded him to be held until I could send him to Caesar."	21 Mais Paul ayant interjeté appel pour que son cas fût réservé au jugement de l'auguste empereur, j'aiordonné de le garder jusqu'à ce que je l'envoie à César."
22 And Agrippa said to Festus, "I should like to hear the man myself." "Tomorrow," said he, "you shall hear him."	22 Agrippa dit à Festus: "Je voudrais, moi aussi, entendre cet homme" - "Demain, dit-il, tul'entendras."
23 So on the morrow Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp, and they entered the audience hall with the military tribunes and the prominent men of the city. Then by command of Festus Paul was brought in.	23 Le lendemain donc, Agrippa et Bérénice vinrent en grande pompe et se rendirent à la salled'audience, entourés des tribuns et des notabilités de la ville. Sur l'ordre de Festus, on amena Paul.
24 And Festus said, "King Agrippa and all who are present with us, you see this man about whom the whole Jewish people petitioned me, both at Jerusalem and here, shouting that he ought not to live any longer.	24 Festus dit alors: "Roi Agrippa et vous tous ici présents avec nous, vous voyez cet homme au sujetduquel la communauté juive tout entière est intervenue auprès de moi, tant à Jérusalem qu'ici, protestant à grandscris qu'il ne fallait pas le laisser vivre davantage.
25 But I found that he had done nothing deserving death; and as he himself appealed to the emperor, I decided to send him.	25 Pour moi, j'ai reconnu qu'il n'a rien fait qui mérite la mort; cependant, comme il en a lui-mêmeappelé à l'auguste empereur, j'ai décidé de le lui envoyer.
26 But I have nothing definite to write to my lord about him. Therefore I have brought him before you, and, especially before you, King Agrippa, that, after we have examined him, I may have something to write.	26 Je n'ai rien de bien précis à écrire au Seigneur sur son compte; c'est pourquoi je l'ai fait comparaîtredevant vous, devant toi surtout, roi Agrippa, afin qu'après cet interrogatoire, j'aie quelque chose à écrire.
27 For it seems to me unreasonable, in sending a prisoner, not to indicate the charges against him."	27 Il me paraît absurde, en effet, d'envoyer un prisonnier sans indiquer en même temps les charges quipèsent sur lui."
