Acts of the Apostles 17

1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.	1 Seguendo la via di Anfìpoli e Apollonia, giunsero a Tessalonica, dove c'era una sinagoga dei Giudei.
2 And Paul went in, as was his custom, and for three weeks he argued with them from the scriptures,	2 Come era sua consuetudine Paolo vi andò e per tre sabati discusse con loro sulla base delle Scritture,
3 explaining and proving that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus, whom I proclaim to you, is the Christ."	3 spiegandole e dimostrando che il Cristo doveva morire e risuscitare dai morti; il Cristo, diceva, è quel Gesù che io vi annunzio.
4 And some of them were persuaded, and joined Paul and Silas; as did a great many of the devout Greeks and not a few of the leading women.	4 Alcuni di loro furono convinti e aderirono a Paolo e a Sila, come anche un buon numero di Greci credenti in Dio e non poche donne della nobiltà.
5 But the Jews were jealous, and taking some wicked fellows of the rabble, they gathered a crowd, set the city in an uproar, and attacked the house of Jason, seeking to bring them out to the people.	5 Ma i Giudei, ingelositi, trassero dalla loro parte alcuni pessimi individui di piazza e, radunata gente, mettevano in subbuglio la città. Presentatisi alla casa di Giàsone, cercavano Paolo e Sila per condurli davanti al popolo.
6 And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brethren before the city authorities, crying, "These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also,	6 Ma non avendoli trovati, trascinarono Giàsone e alcuni fratelli dai capi della città gridando: "Quei tali che mettono il mondo in agitazione sono anche qui e Giàsone li ha ospitati.
7 and Jason has received them; and they are all acting against the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus."	7 Tutti costoro vanno contro i decreti dell'imperatore, affermando che c'è un altro re, Gesù".
8 And the people and the city authorities were disturbed when they heard this.	8 Così misero in agitazione la popolazione e i capi della città che udivano queste cose;
9 And when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.	9 tuttavia, dopo avere ottenuto una cauzione da Giàsone e dagli altri, li rilasciarono.
10 The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea; and when they arrived they went into the Jewish synagogue.	10 Ma i fratelli subito, durante la notte, fecero partire Paolo e Sila verso Berèa. Giunti colà entrarono nella sinagoga dei Giudei.
11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with all eagerness, examining the scriptures daily to see if these things were so.	11 Questi erano di sentimenti più nobili di quelli di Tessalonica ed accolsero la parola con grande entusiasmo, esaminando ogni giorno le Scritture per vedere se le cose stavano davvero così.
12 Many of them therefore believed, with not a few Greek women of high standing as well as men.	12 Molti di loro credettero e anche alcune donne greche della nobiltà e non pochi uomini.
13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Beroea also, they came there too, stirring up and inciting the crowds.	13 Ma quando i Giudei di Tessalonica vennero a sapere che anche a Berèa era stata annunziata da Paolo la parola di Dio, andarono anche colà ad agitare e sobillare il popolo.
14 Then the brethren immediately sent Paul off on his way to the sea, but Silas and Timothy remained there.	14 Allora i fratelli fecero partire subito Paolo per la strada verso il mare, mentre Sila e Timòteo rimasero in città.
15 Those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens; and receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible, they departed.	15 Quelli che scortavano Paolo lo accompagnarono fino ad Atene e se ne ripartirono con l'ordine per Sila e Timòteo di raggiungerlo al più presto.
16 Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols.	16 Mentre Paolo li attendeva ad Atene, fremeva nel suo spirito al vedere la città piena di idoli.
17 So he argued in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the market place every day with those who chanced to be there.	17 Discuteva frattanto nella sinagoga con i Giudei e i pagani credenti in Dio e ogni giorno sulla piazza principale con quelli che incontrava.
18 Some also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers met him. And some said, "What would this babbler say?" Others said, "He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities"--because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.	18 Anche certi filosofi epicurei e stoici discutevano con lui e alcuni dicevano: "Che cosa vorrà mai insegnare questo ciarlatano?". E altri: "Sembra essere un annnunziatore di divinità straniere"; poiché annunziava Gesù e la risurrezione.
19 And they took hold of him and brought him to the Are-opagus, saying, "May we know what this new teaching is which you present?	19 Presolo con sé, lo condussero sull'Areòpago e dissero: "Possiamo dunque sapere qual è questa nuova dottrina predicata da te?
20 For you bring some strange things to our ears; we wish to know therefore what these things mean."	20 Cose strane per vero ci metti negli orecchi; desideriamo dunque conoscere di che cosa si tratta".
21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new.	21 Tutti gli Ateniesi infatti e gli stranieri colà residenti non avevano passatempo più gradito che parlare e sentir parlare.
22 So Paul, standing in the middle of the Are-opagus, said: "Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious.	22 Allora Paolo, alzatosi in mezzo all'Areòpago, disse: "Cittadini ateniesi, vedo che in tutto siete molto timorati degli dèi.
23 For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, 'To an unknown god.' What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.	23 Passando infatti e osservando i monumenti del vostro culto, ho trovato anche un'ara con l'iscrizione: Al Dio ignoto. Quello che voi adorate senza conoscere, io ve lo annunzio.
24 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by man,	24 'Il Dio che ha fatto il mondo e tutto ciò che contiene', che è signore del cielo e della terra, non dimora in templi costruiti dalle mani dell'uomo
25 nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all men life and breath and everything.	25 né dalle mani dell'uomo si lascia servire come se avesse bisogno di qualche cosa, essendo lui che dà a tutti la vita e il respiro e ogni cosa.
26 And he made from one every nation of men to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their habitation,	26 Egli creò da uno solo tutte le nazioni degli uomini, perché abitassero su tutta la faccia della terra. Per essi ha stabilito l'ordine dei tempi e i confini del loro spazio,
27 that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel after him and find him. Yet he is not far from each one of us,	27 perché cercassero Dio, se mai arrivino a trovarlo andando come a tentoni, benché non sia lontano da ciascuno di noi.
28 for 'In him we live and move and have our being'; as even some of your poets have said, 'For we are indeed his offspring.'	28 In lui infatti viviamo, ci muoviamo ed esistiamo, come anche alcuni dei vostri poeti hanno detto: Poiché di lui stirpe noi siamo.
29 Being then God's offspring, we ought not to think that the Deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, a representation by the art and imagination of man.	29 Essendo noi dunque stirpe di Dio, non dobbiamo pensare che la divinità sia simile all'oro, all'argento e alla pietra, che porti l'impronta dell'arte e dell'immaginazione umana.
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all men everywhere to repent,	30 Dopo esser passato sopra ai tempi dell'ignoranza, ora Dio ordina a tutti gli uomini di tutti i luoghi di ravvedersi,
31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all men by raising him from the dead."	31 poiché egli ha stabilito un giorno nel quale dovrà giudicare la terra con giustizia per mezzo di un uomo che egli ha designato, dandone a tutti prova sicura col risuscitarlo dai morti".
32 Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, "We will hear you again about this."	32 Quando sentirono parlare di risurrezione di morti, alcuni lo deridevano, altri dissero: "Ti sentiremo su questo un'altra volta".
33 So Paul went out from among them.	33 Così Paolo uscì da quella riunione.
34 But some men joined him and believed, among them Dionysius the Are-opagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them.	34 Ma alcuni aderirono a lui e divennero credenti, fra questi anche Dionìgi membro dell'Areòpago, una donna di nome Dàmaris e altri con loro.
