Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.1 It was very early on the first day of the week and stil dark, when Mary of Magdala came to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved away from the tomb
So she ran, and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him."2 and came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. 'They have takenthe Lord out of the tomb,' she said, 'and we don't know where they have put him.'
Peter then came out with the other disciple, and they went toward the tomb.3 So Peter set out with the other disciple to go to the tomb.
They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first;4 They ran together, but the other disciple, running faster than Peter, reached the tomb first;
and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in.5 he bent down and saw the linen cloths lying on the ground, but did not go in.
Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying,6 Simon Peter, fol owing him, also came up, went into the tomb, saw the linen cloths lying on the ground
and the napkin, which had been on his head, not lying with the linen cloths but rolled up in a place by itself.7 and also the cloth that had been over his head; this was not with the linen cloths but rolled up in aplace by itself.
Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;8 Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in; he saw and he believed.
for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.9 Til this moment they had stil not understood the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.
Then the disciples went back to their homes.10 The disciples then went back home.
But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb;11 But Mary was standing outside near the tomb, weeping. Then, as she wept, she stooped to lookinside,
and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.12 and saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head, the other atthe feet.
They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him."13 They said, 'Woman, why are you weeping?' 'They have taken my Lord away,' she replied, 'and I don'tknow where they have put him.'
Saying this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus.14 As she said this she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not realise that itwas Jesus.
Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom do you seek?" Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away."15 Jesus said to her, 'Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?' Supposing him to be thegardener, she said, 'Sir, if you have taken him away, tel me where you have put him, and I will go and removehim.'
Jesus said to her, "Mary." She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rab-boni!" (which means Teacher).16 Jesus said, 'Mary!' She turned round then and said to him in Hebrew, 'Rabbuni!' -- which meansMaster.
Jesus said to her, "Do not hold me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God."17 Jesus said to her, 'Do not cling to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to thebrothers, and tell them: I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'
Mary Magdalene went and said to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord"; and she told them that he had said these things to her.18 So Mary of Magdala told the disciples, 'I have seen the Lord,' and that he had said these things toher.
On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."19 In the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room wherethe disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, 'Peace be withyou,'
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.20 and, after saying this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy atseeing the Lord,
Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you."21 and he said to them again, 'Peace be with you. 'As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.'
And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.22 After saying this he breathed on them and said: Receive the Holy Spirit.
If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."23 If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone's sins, they are retained.
Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came.24 Thomas, cal ed the Twin, who was one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came.
So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see in his hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in his side, I will not believe."25 So the other disciples said to him, 'We have seen the Lord,' but he answered, 'Unless I can see theholes that the nails made in his hands and can put my finger into the holes they made, and unless I can put myhand into his side, I refuse to believe.'
Eight days later, his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you."26 Eight days later the disciples were in the house again and Thomas was with them. The doors wereclosed, but Jesus came in and stood among them. 'Peace be with you,' he said.
Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing."27 Then he spoke to Thomas, 'Put your finger here; look, here are my hands. Give me your hand; put itinto my side. Do not be unbelieving any more but believe.'
Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"28 Thomas replied, 'My Lord and my God!'
Jesus said to him, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe."29 Jesus said to him: You believe because you can see me. Blessed are those who have not seen andyet believe.
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book;30 There were many other signs that Jesus worked in the sight of the disciples, but they are notrecorded in this book.
but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.31 These are recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and thatbelieving this you may have life through his name.
