Deuteronomy 32

1 "Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; and let the earth hear the words of my mouth.	1 “Cieux, prêtez l’oreille et je parlerai, que la terre écoute les paroles de ma bouche!
2 May my teaching drop as the rain, my speech distil as the dew, as the gentle rain upon the tender grass, and as the showers upon the herb.	2 Que mon enseignement descende comme la pluie, et que ma parole comme la rosée se répande, comme la pluie sur l’herbe verte, comme les ondées sur le gazon.
3 For I will proclaim the name of the LORD. Ascribe greatness to our God!	3 Je vais invoquer le nom de Yahvé: rendez hommage à notre Dieu!
4 "The Rock, his work is perfect; for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and right is he.	4 Il est le Rocher, son œuvre est parfaite, toutes ses voies sont justes. Il est un Dieu de vérité, ennemi du mal, il est juste et il est droit.
5 They have dealt corruptly with him, they are no longer his children because of their blemish; they are a perverse and crooked generation.	5 Il avait engendré des fils dans la droiture, ils se sont dévoyés: c’est une engeance perverse et mauvaise!
6 Do you thus requite the LORD, you foolish and senseless people? Is not he your father, who created you, who made you and established you?	6 Est-ce là ta façon de remercier Yahvé, peuple fou et sans cervelle? N’est-il pas ton père, celui qui t’a créé, celui qui t’a façonné et mis en place?
7 Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations; ask your father, and he will show you; your elders, and they will tell you.	7 Souviens-toi des jours d’autrefois, rappelle-toi les années des siècles passés. Interroge ton père et il t’instruira, demande aux anciens, ils te répondront.
8 When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of men, he fixed the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God.	8 Lorsque le Très-Haut disposait les nations, lorsqu’il répartissait les fils d’Adam, il fixa des bornes aux peuples selon le nombre de leurs anges;
9 For the LORD's portion is his people, Jacob his allotted heritage.	9 Mais la part de Yahvé, c’est son peuple, Jacob est son propre domaine.
10 "He found him in a desert land, and in the howling waste of the wilderness; he encircled him, he cared for him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.	10 Il l’a trouvé dans une terre déserte, dans le chaos, les hurlements des terres sauvages. Il l’entoure et prend soin de lui, il le garde comme la prunelle de son œil.
11 Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, that flutters over its young, spreading out its wings, catching them, bearing them on its pinions,	11 Comme un aigle éveillant sa nichée, qui plane au-dessus de ses petits, Yahvé déploie sur Israël ses ailes, il le prend et l’emporte sur son plumage.
12 the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no foreign god with him.	12 Lui n’a pas d’autre guide que Yahvé: pas un dieu étranger avec lui!
13 He made him ride on the high places of the earth, and he ate the produce of the field; and he made him suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock.	13 Yahvé l’installe au plus haut de la terre: Israël mange le produit des champs. Yahvé lui donne à goûter le miel de la roche, l’huile secrète des durs rochers,
14 Curds from the herd, and milk from the flock, with fat of lambs and rams, herds of Bashan and goats, with the finest of the wheat--and of the blood of the grape you drank wine.	14 la crème des vaches et le lait des brebis, avec la graisse des agneaux, les béliers de Bashan et les boucs, et la meilleure farine de blé: le sang des raisins devient sa boisson.
15 "But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked; you waxed fat, you grew thick, you became sleek; then he forsook God who made him, and scoffed at the Rock of his salvation.	15 Mais Jacob a mangé, il est rassasié, Yéchouroun est gras et il se révolte: oui, te voilà gras, comblé, gavé! Israël repousse son Dieu qui l’a façonné. Voilà qu’il méprise à présent le rocher qui le sauve.
16 They stirred him to jealousy with strange gods; with abominable practices they provoked him to anger.	16 Ils l’ont rendu jaloux, suivant des étrangers, ils l’ont mis en colère avec leurs horreurs.
17 They sacrificed to demons which were no gods, to gods they had never known, to new gods that had come in of late, whom your fathers had never dreaded.	17 Ils ont offert des sacrifices à des démons qui n’ont rien de Dieu, à des dieux qu’ils ne connaissaient pas, des dieux venus de la dernière heure, que leurs pères n’avaient pas appris à craindre.
18 You were unmindful of the Rock that begot you, and you forgot the God who gave you birth.	18 Quoi! tu laisses le rocher qui t’a donné la vie, tu méprises le Dieu qui t’a enfanté?
19 "The LORD saw it, and spurned them, because of the provocation of his sons and his daughters.	19 Yahvé l’a vu, et il méprise ces fils, ces filles qui l’ont mis en colère.
20 And he said, 'I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end will be, for they are a perverse generation, children in whom is no faithfulness.	20 Il a dit: Je leur cacherai ma face, et je verrai quel sera leur sort. Oui, c’est une race mauvaise, des fils incapables de fidélité.
21 They have stirred me to jealousy with what is no god; they have provoked me with their idols. So I will stir them to jealousy with those who are no people; I will provoke them with a foolish nation.	21 Ils m’ont rendu jaloux avec des dieux de rien, mis en colère par de sottes idoles: je les rendrai jaloux d’un peuple de rien, je les mettrai en colère par une nation sotte.
22 For a fire is kindled by my anger, and it burns to the depths of Sheol, devours the earth and its increase, and sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.	22 Oui, le feu de ma colère s’est enflammé, sa flamme descend jusqu’au séjour des enfers. Il dévore la terre et ses récoltes, il calcine les assises des monts.
23 "'And I will heap evils upon them; I will spend my arrows upon them;	23 Je déchargerai sur eux mes fléaux, sur eux j’épuiserai mes flèches.
24 they shall be wasted with hunger, and devoured with burning heat and poisonous pestilence; and I will send the teeth of beasts against them, with venom of crawling things of the dust.	24 Ils seront minés par la faim, les fièvres, la peste qui sème la mort. J’enverrai contre eux la dent des bêtes, et le venin de ce qui rampe dans la poussière.
25 In the open the sword shall bereave, and in the chambers shall be terror, destroying both young man and virgin, the sucking child with the man of gray hairs.	25 Au-dehors, l’épée fait ses ravages, et dans les maisons c’est l’effroi. Garçons et filles périront ensemble, l’enfant à la mamelle avec le vieillard.
26 I would have said, "I will scatter them afar, I will make the remembrance of them cease from among men,"	26 Je pensais les réduire en poussière, effacer leur souvenir du milieu des hommes,
27 had I not feared provocation by the enemy, lest their adversaries should judge amiss, lest they should say, "Our hand is triumphant, the LORD has not wrought all this."'	27 mais je crains l’arrogance de leurs adversaires, leurs ennemis pourraient se tromper; ne diraient-ils pas: “Notre main a été la plus forte, Yahvé n’y était pour rien”?
28 "For they are a nation void of counsel, and there is no understanding in them.	28 Cette nation ne sait pas se conduire, c’est une nation sans intelligence.
29 If they were wise, they would understand this, they would discern their latter end!	29 Avec un peu de sagesse, ils comprendraient, ils verraient où cela les conduit.
30 How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had given them up?	30 Quand un homme en poursuit mille, quand deux mettent dix mille en fuite, n’est-ce pas que leur Rocher les a vendus, que Yahvé lui-même les a livrés?
31 For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.	31 Lui est notre Rocher, devraient-ils dire, et ces peuples, leur roche n’est rien! ils n’ont rien à nous apprendre.
32 For their vine comes from the vine of Sodom, and from the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of poison, their clusters are bitter;	32 Car leur vigne est une vigne de Sodome, on l’a prise aux vignobles de Gomorrhe. Leurs raisins sont des raisins rêches, leurs grappes sont des grappes amères.
33 their wine is the poison of serpents, and the cruel venom of asps.	33 Leur vin est un venin de serpents, vrai poison de vipères.
34 "Is not this laid up in store with me, sealed up in my treasuries?	34 Israël n’est-il pas un joyau que je porte? et que j’enferme dans mes trésors?
35 Vengeance is mine, and recompense, for the time when their foot shall slip; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and their doom comes swiftly.	35 À moi la vengeance et le châtiment, car bientôt ils vont chanceler, tout proche est le jour de leur malheur, et sous peu viendra pour eux la ruine.
36 For the LORD will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants, when he sees that their power is gone, and there is none remaining, bond or free.	36 Car Yahvé rendra justice à son peuple, il prendra en pitié ses serviteurs lorsqu’il verra que leur vigueur s’épuise, qu’il n’y a plus chez eux esclave ni homme libre.
37 Then he will say, 'Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge,	37 Alors Il dira: Où sont leurs dieux, ce beau rocher où ils se réfugiaient,
38 who ate the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offering? Let them rise up and help you, let them be your protection!	38 qui mangeaient la graisse de leurs sacrifices et buvaient le vin de leurs libations? Qu’ils se lèvent, qu’ils accourent et les prennent sous leur protection!
39 "'See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.	39 Mais non, regardez: c’est moi qui suis Dieu, il n’y a pas d’autre Dieu que moi! C’est moi qui fais mourir et qui fais vivre, c’est moi qui blesse, et je guéris; nul ne peut délivrer de ma main!
40 For I lift up my hand to heaven, and swear, As I live for ever,	40 Je lève ma main vers le ciel et je jure: aussi vrai que je vis à jamais,
41 if I whet my glittering sword, and my hand takes hold on judgment, I will take vengeance on my adversaries, and will requite those who hate me.	41 j’aiguiserai mon épée redoutable, et je prendrai sur moi de juger. Je me vengerai de mes ennemis, à ceux qui me haïssent, je rendrai la pareille.
42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh--with the blood of the slain and the captives, from the long-haired heads of the enemy.'	42 Mes flèches s’enivreront de sang, mon épée aura sa ration de victimes: le sang des morts et des prisonniers, les têtes ennemies avec leur tignasse!
43 "Praise his people, O you nations; for he avenges the blood of his servants, and takes vengeance on his adversaries, and makes expiation for the land of his people."	43 Cieux, faites-lui fête, fils de Dieu, prosternez-vous devant lui! Car il venge le sang de ses serviteurs, il rend la pareille à ses adversaires, et il purifie la terre de son peuple.”
44 Moses came and recited all the words of this song in the hearing of the people, he and Joshua the son of Nun.	44 Alors Moïse s’approcha avec Josué, fils de Noun, et il enseigna à tout le peuple les paroles de ce cantique.
45 And when Moses had finished speaking all these words to all Israel,	45 Lorsque Moïse eut achevé de dire toutes ces paroles à Israël,
46 he said to them, "Lay to heart all the words which I enjoin upon you this day, that you may command them to your children, that they may be careful to do all the words of this law.	46 il ajouta: “Prenez à cœur toutes les paroles que je prononce aujourd’hui solennellement devant vous, ordonnez à vos fils de mettre soigneusement en pratique toutes les paroles de cette Loi.
47 For it is no trifle for you, but it is your life, and thereby you shall live long in the land which you are going over the Jordan to possess."	47 Vous lui apporterez toute votre attention, car elle est votre vie. C’est par elle que vous vivrez de longs jours sur la terre qui sera vôtre, quand vous aurez traversé le Jourdain.”
48 And the LORD said to Moses that very day,	48 Ce même jour Yahvé dit à Moïse:
49 "Ascend this mountain of the Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, opposite Jericho; and view the land of Canaan, which I give to the people of Israel for a possession;	49 “Monte à cette chaîne des Abarim dans le pays de Moab, face à Jéricho, et gravis le mont Nébo. De là tu pourras voir le pays de Canaan que je donne aux Israélites en propriété.
50 and die on the mountain which you ascend, and be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died in Mount Hor and was gathered to his people;	50 Puis meurs sur la montagne que tu vas gravir et tu seras réuni à ton peuple, comme Aaron ton frère est mort sur la montagne de Hor, et il a été réuni à son peuple.
51 because you broke faith with me in the midst of the people of Israel at the waters of Meri-bath-adesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because you did not revere me as holy in the midst of the people of Israel.	51 Tu sais bien que vous m’avez été infidèles aux eaux de Mériba, à Qadesh dans le désert de Tsin, quand tout Israël vous regardait: vous ne m’avez pas sanctifié devant les Israélites.
52 For you shall see the land before you; but you shall not go there, into the land which I give to the people of Israel."	52 C’est pourquoi tu verras le pays de loin, mais tu n’y entreras pas.”
