Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
"You shall not see your brother's ox or his sheep go astray, and withhold your help from them; you shall take them back to your brother.1 "You shall not see your kinsman's ox or sheep driven astray without showing concern about it; see to it that it is returned to your kinsman.
And if he is not near you, or if you do not know him, you shall bring it home to your house, and it shall be with you until your brother seeks it; then you shall restore it to him.2 If this kinsman does not live near you, or you do not know who he may be, take it to your own place and keep it with you until he claims it; then give it back to him.
And so you shall do with his ass; so you shall do with his garment; so you shall do with any lost thing of your brothers, which he loses and you find; you may not withhold your help.3 You shall do the same with his ass, or his garment, or anything else which your kinsman loses and you happen to find; you may not be unconcerned about them.
You shall not see your brother's ass or his ox fallen down by the way, and withhold your help from them; you shall help him to lift them up again.4 You shall not see your kinsman's ass or ox foundering on the road without showing concern about it; see to it that you help him lift it up.
"A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman's garment; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God.5 "A woman shall not wear an article proper to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman's dress; for anyone who does such things is an abomination to the LORD, your God.
"If you chance to come upon a bird's nest, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs and the mother sitting upon the young or upon the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young;6 "If, while walking along, you chance upon a bird's nest with young birds or eggs in it, in any tree or on the ground, and the mother bird is sitting on them, you shall not take away the mother bird along with her brood;
you shall let the mother go, but the young you may take to yourself; that it may go well with you, and that you may live long.7 you shall let her go, although you may take her brood away. It is thus that you shall have prosperity and a long life.
"When you build a new house, you shall make a parapet for your roof, that you may not bring the guilt of blood upon your house, if any one fall from it.8 "When you build a new house, put a parapet around the roof; otherwise, if someone falls off, you will bring bloodguilt upon your house.
"You shall not sow your vineyard with two kinds of seed, lest the whole yield be forfeited to the sanctuary, the crop which you have sown and the yield of the vineyard.9 "You shall not sow your vineyard with two different kinds of seed; if you do, its produce shall become forfeit, both the crop you have sown and the yield of the vineyard.
You shall not plow with an ox and an ass together.10 You shall not plow with an ox and an ass harnessed together.
You shall not wear a mingled stuff, wool and linen together.11 You shall not wear cloth of two different kinds of thread, wool and linen, woven together.
"You shall make yourself tassels on the four corners of your cloak with which you cover yourself.12 "You shall put twisted cords on the four corners of the cloak that you wrap around you.
"If any man takes a wife, and goes in to her, and then spurns her,13 "If a man, after marrying a woman and having relations with her, comes to dislike her,
and charges her with shameful conduct, and brings an evil name upon her, saying, 'I took this woman, and when I came near her, I did not find in her the tokens of virginity,'14 and makes monstrous charges against her and defames her by saying, 'I married this woman, but when I first had relations with her I did not find her a virgin,'
then the father of the young woman and her mother shall take and bring out the tokens of her virginity to the elders of the city in the gate;15 the father and mother of the girl shall take the evidence of her virginity and bring it to the elders at the city gate.
and the father of the young woman shall say to the elders, 'I gave my daughter to this man to wife, and he spurns her;16 There the father of the girl shall say to the elders, 'I gave my daughter to this man in marriage, but he has come to dislike her,
and lo, he has made shameful charges against her, saying, "I did not find in your daughter the tokens of virginity." And yet these are the tokens of my daughter's virginity.' And they shall spread the garment before the elders of the city.17 and now brings monstrous charges against her, saying: I did not find your daughter a virgin. But here is the evidence of my daughter's virginity!' And they shall spread out the cloth before the elders of the city.
Then the elders of that city shall take the man and whip him;18 Then these city elders shall take the man and chastise him,
and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver, and give them to the father of the young woman, because he has brought an evil name upon a virgin of Israel; and she shall be his wife; he may not put her away all his days.19 besides fining him one hundred silver shekels, which they shall give to the girl's father, because the man defamed a virgin in Israel. Moreover, she shall remain his wife, and he may not divorce her as long as he lives.
But if the thing is true, that the tokens of virginity were not found in the young woman,20 "But if this charge is true, and evidence of the girl's virginity is not found,
then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has wrought folly in Israel by playing the harlot in her father's house; so you shall purge the evil from the midst of you.21 they shall bring the girl to the entrance of her father's house and there her townsmen shall stone her to death, because she committed a crime against Israel by her unchasteness in her father's house. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst.
"If a man is found lying with the wife of another man, both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman; so you shall purge the evil from Israel.22 "If a man is discovered having relations with a woman who is married to another, both the man and the woman with whom he has had relations shall die. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst.
"If there is a betrothed virgin, and a man meets her in the city and lies with her,23 "If within the city a man comes upon a maiden who is betrothed, and has relations with her,
then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbor's wife; so you shall purge the evil from the midst of you.24 you shall bring them both out to the gate of the city and there stone them to death: the girl because she did not cry out for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbor's wife. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst.
"But if in the open country a man meets a young woman who is betrothed, and the man seizes her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die.25 "If, however, it is in the open fields that a man comes upon such a betrothed maiden, seizes her and has relations with her, the man alone shall die.
But to the young woman you shall do nothing; in the young woman there is no offense punishable by death, for this case is like that of a man attacking and murdering his neighbor;26 You shall do nothing to the maiden, since she is not guilty of a capital offense. This case is like that of a man who rises up against his neighbor and murders him:
because he came upon her in the open country, and though the betrothed young woman cried for help there was no one to rescue her.27 it was in the open fields that he came upon her, and though the betrothed maiden may have cried out for help, there was no one to come to her aid.
"If a man meets a virgin who is not betrothed, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are found,28 "If a man comes upon a maiden that is not betrothed, takes her and has relations with her, and their deed is discovered,
then the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has violated her; he may not put her away all his days.29 the man who had relations with her shall pay the girl's father fifty silver shekels and take her as his wife, because he has deflowered her. Moreover, he may not divorce her as long as he lives.
"A man shall not take his father's wife, nor shall he uncover her who is his fathers.
