Deuteronomy 21

1 "If in the land which the LORD your God gives you to possess, any one is found slain, lying in the open country, and it is not known who killed him,	1 Se nel paese di cui il Signore, tuo Dio, sta per darti il possesso, si troverà un uomo ucciso, disteso nella campagna, senza che si sappia chi l’abbia ucciso,
2 then your elders and your judges shall come forth, and they shall measure the distance to the cities which are around him that is slain;	2 i tuoi anziani e i tuoi giudici usciranno e misureranno la distanza fra l’ucciso e le città dei dintorni.
3 and the elders of the city which is nearest to the slain man shall take a heifer which has never been worked and which has not pulled in the yoke.	3 Allora gli anziani della città più vicina all’ucciso prenderanno una giovenca che non abbia ancora lavorato né portato il giogo.
4 And the elders of that city shall bring the heifer down to a valley with running water, which is neither plowed nor sown, and shall break the heifer's neck there in the valley.	4 Gli anziani di quella città faranno scendere la giovenca presso un corso d’acqua corrente, in un luogo dove non si lavora e non si semina e là spezzeranno la nuca alla giovenca.
5 And the priests the sons of Levi shall come forward, for the LORD your God has chosen them to minister to him and to bless in the name of the LORD, and by their word every dispute and every assault shall be settled.	5 Si avvicineranno poi i sacerdoti, figli di Levi, poiché il Signore, tuo Dio, li ha scelti per servirlo e per dare la benedizione nel nome del Signore e la loro parola dovrà decidere ogni controversia e ogni caso di lesione.
6 And all the elders of that city nearest to the slain man shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley;	6 Allora tutti gli anziani di quella città che sono i più vicini al cadavere, si laveranno le mani sulla giovenca a cui sarà stata spezzata la nuca nel torrente.
7 and they shall testify, 'Our hands did not shed this blood, neither did our eyes see it shed.	7 Prendendo la parola diranno: “Le nostre mani non hanno sparso questo sangue e i nostri occhi non l’hanno visto spargere.
8 Forgive, O LORD, thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, and set not the guilt of innocent blood in the midst of thy people Israel; but let the guilt of blood be forgiven them.'	8 Signore, libera dalla colpa il tuo popolo Israele, che tu hai redento, e non imputare al tuo popolo Israele sangue innocente!”. Quel sangue, per quanto li riguarda, resterà espiato.
9 So you shall purge the guilt of innocent blood from your midst, when you do what is right in the sight of the LORD.	9 Così tu toglierai da te il sangue innocente, perché avrai fatto ciò che è retto agli occhi del Signore.
10 "When you go forth to war against your enemies, and the LORD your God gives them into your hands, and you take them captive,	10 Se andrai in guerra contro i tuoi nemici e il Signore, tuo Dio, te li avrà messi nelle mani e tu avrai fatto prigionieri,
11 and see among the captives a beautiful woman, and you have desire for her and would take her for yourself as wife,	11 se vedrai tra i prigionieri una donna bella d’aspetto e ti sentirai legato a lei tanto da volerla prendere in moglie,
12 then you shall bring her home to your house, and she shall shave her head and pare her nails.	12 te la condurrai a casa. Ella si raderà il capo, si taglierà le unghie,
13 And she shall put off her captive's garb, and shall remain in your house and bewail her father and her mother a full month; after that you may go in to her, and be her husband, and she shall be your wife.	13 si leverà la veste che portava quando fu presa, dimorerà in casa tua e piangerà suo padre e sua madre per un mese intero; dopo, potrai unirti a lei e comportarti da marito verso di lei e sarà tua moglie.
14 Then, if you have no delight in her, you shall let her go where she will; but you shall not sell her for money, you shall not treat her as a slave, since you have humiliated her.	14 Se in seguito non ti sentissi più di amarla, la lascerai andare per suo conto, ma non potrai assolutamente venderla per denaro né trattarla come una schiava, perché tu l’hai disonorata.
15 "If a man has two wives, the one loved and the other disliked, and they have borne him children, both the loved and the disliked, and if the first-born son is hers that is disliked,	15 Se un uomo avrà due mogli, l’una amata e l’altra odiata, e tanto l’amata quanto l’odiata gli avranno procreato figli, se il primogenito è il figlio dell’odiata,
16 then on the day when he assigns his possessions as an inheritance to his sons, he may not treat the son of the loved as the first-born in preference to the son of the disliked, who is the first-born,	16 quando dividerà tra i suoi figli i beni che possiede, non potrà dare il diritto di primogenito al figlio dell’amata, preferendolo al figlio dell’odiata, che è il primogenito.
17 but he shall acknowledge the first-born, the son of the disliked, by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the first issue of his strength; the right of the first-born is his.	17 Riconoscerà invece come primogenito il figlio dell’odiata, dandogli il doppio di quello che possiede, poiché costui è la primizia del suo vigore e a lui appartiene il diritto di primogenitura.
18 "If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son, who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and, though they chastise him, will not give heed to them,	18 Se un uomo avrà un figlio testardo e ribelle che non obbedisce alla voce né di suo padre né di sua madre e, benché l’abbiano castigato, non dà loro retta,
19 then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gate of the place where he lives,	19 suo padre e sua madre lo prenderanno e lo condurranno dagli anziani della città, alla porta del luogo dove abita,
20 and they shall say to the elders of his city, 'This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.'	20 e diranno agli anziani della città: “Questo nostro figlio è testardo e ribelle; non vuole obbedire alla nostra voce, è un ingordo e un ubriacone”.
21 Then all the men of the city shall stone him to death with stones; so you shall purge the evil from your midst; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.	21 Allora tutti gli uomini della sua città lo lapideranno ed egli morirà. Così estirperai da te il male, e tutto Israele lo saprà e avrà timore.
22 "And if a man has committed a crime punishable by death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree,	22 Se un uomo avrà commesso un delitto degno di morte e tu l’avrai messo a morte e appeso a un albero,
23 his body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is accursed by God; you shall not defile your land which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance.	23 il suo cadavere non dovrà rimanere tutta la notte sull’albero, ma lo seppellirai lo stesso giorno, perché l’appeso è una maledizione di Dio e tu non contaminerai il paese che il Signore, tuo Dio, ti dà in eredità.
