1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberi-us Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysani-as tetrarch of Abilene,	1 Es war im fünfzehnten Jahr der Regierung des Kaisers Tiberius; Pontius Pilatus war Statthalter von Judäa, Herodes Tetrarch von Galiläa, sein Bruder Philippus Tetrarch von Ituräa und Trachonitis, Lysanias Tetrarch von Abilene;
2 in the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness;	2 Hohepriester waren Hannas und Kajaphas. Da erging in der Wüste das Wort Gottes an Johannes, den Sohn des Zacharias.
3 and he went into all the region about the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.	3 Und er zog in die Gegend am Jordan und verkündigte dort überall Umkehr und Taufe zur Vergebung der Sünden.
4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.	4 (So erfüllte sich,) was im Buch der Reden des Propheten Jesaja steht: Eine Stimme ruft in der Wüste: Bereitet dem Herrn den Weg! Ebnet ihm die Straßen!
5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;	5 Jede Schlucht soll aufgefüllt werden, jeder Berg und Hügel sich senken. Was krumm ist, soll gerade werden, was uneben ist, soll zum ebenen Weg werden.
6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God."	6 Und alle Menschen werden das Heil sehen, das von Gott kommt.
7 He said therefore to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?	7 Das Volk zog in Scharen zu ihm hinaus, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen. Er sagte zu ihnen: Ihr Schlangenbrut, wer hat euch denn gelehrt, dass ihr dem kommenden Gericht entrinnen könnt?
8 Bear fruits that befit repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham.	8 Bringt Früchte hervor, die eure Umkehr zeigen, und fangt nicht an zu sagen: Wir haben ja Abraham zum Vater. Denn ich sage euch: Gott kann aus diesen Steinen Kinder Abrahams machen.
9 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire."	9 Schon ist die Axt an die Wurzel der Bäume gelegt; jeder Baum, der keine gute Frucht hervorbringt, wird umgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen.
10 And the multitudes asked him, "What then shall we do?"	10 Da fragten ihn die Leute: Was sollen wir also tun?
11 And he answered them, "He who has two coats, let him share with him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise."	11 Er antwortete ihnen: Wer zwei Gewänder hat, der gebe eines davon dem, der keines hat, und wer zu essen hat, der handle ebenso.
12 Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and said to him, "Teacher, what shall we do?"	12 Es kamen auch Zöllner zu ihm, um sich taufen zu lassen, und fragten: Meister, was sollen wir tun?
13 And he said to them, "Collect no more than is appointed you."	13 Er sagte zu ihnen: Verlangt nicht mehr, als festgesetzt ist.
14 Soldiers also asked him, "And we, what shall we do?" And he said to them, "Rob no one by violence or by false accusation, and be content with your wages."	14 Auch Soldaten fragten ihn: Was sollen denn wir tun? Und er sagte zu ihnen: Misshandelt niemand, erpresst niemand, begnügt euch mit eurem Sold!
15 As the people were in expectation, and all men questioned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he were the Christ,	15 Das Volk war voll Erwartung und alle überlegten im Stillen, ob Johannes nicht vielleicht selbst der Messias sei.
16 John answered them all, "I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.	16 Doch Johannes gab ihnen allen zur Antwort: Ich taufe euch nur mit Wasser. Es kommt aber einer, der stärker ist als ich, und ich bin es nicht wert, ihm die Schuhe aufzuschnüren. Er wird euch mit dem Heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen.
17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor, and to gather the wheat into his granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."	17 Schon hält er die Schaufel in der Hand, um die Spreu vom Weizen zu trennen und den Weizen in seine Scheune zu bringen; die Spreu aber wird er in nie erlöschendem Feuer verbrennen.
18 So, with many other exhortations, he preached good news to the people.	18 Mit diesen und vielen anderen Worten ermahnte er das Volk in seiner Predigt.
19 But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodi-as, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done,	19 Johannes tadelte auch den Tetrarchen Herodes wegen (der Sache mit) Herodias, der Frau seines Bruders, und wegen all der anderen Schandtaten, die er verübt hatte.
20 added this to them all, that he shut up John in prison.	20 Deshalb ließ Herodes Johannes ins Gefängnis werfen und lud so noch mehr Schuld auf sich.
21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened,	21 Zusammen mit dem ganzen Volk ließ auch Jesus sich taufen. Und während er betete, öffnete sich der Himmel,
22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form, as a dove, and a voice came from heaven, "Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased."	22 und der Heilige Geist kam sichtbar in Gestalt einer Taube auf ihn herab, und eine Stimme aus dem Himmel sprach: Du bist mein geliebter Sohn, an dir habe ich Gefallen gefunden.
