1 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him.	1 Vedendo le folle, Gesù salì sul monte: si pose a sedere e si avvicinarono a lui i suoi discepoli.
2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:	2 Si mise a parlare e insegnava loro dicendo:
3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.	3 «Beati i poveri in spirito, perché di essi è il regno dei cieli.
4 "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.	4 Beati quelli che sono nel pianto, perché saranno consolati.
5 "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.	5 Beati i miti, perché avranno in eredità la terra.
6 "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.	6 Beati quelli che hanno fame e sete della giustizia, perché saranno saziati.
7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.	7 Beati i misericordiosi, perché troveranno misericordia.
8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.	8 Beati i puri di cuore, perché vedranno Dio.
9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.	9 Beati gli operatori di pace, perché saranno chiamati figli di Dio.
10 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.	10 Beati i perseguitati per la giustizia, perché di essi è il regno dei cieli.
11 "Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.	11 Beati voi quando vi insulteranno, vi perseguiteranno e, mentendo, diranno ogni sorta di male contro di voi per causa mia.
12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.	12 Rallegratevi ed esultate, perché grande è la vostra ricompensa nei cieli. Così infatti perseguitarono i profeti che furono prima di voi.
13 "You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men.	13 Voi siete il sale della terra; ma se il sale perde il sapore, con che cosa lo si renderà salato? A null’altro serve che ad essere gettato via e calpestato dalla gente.
14 "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid.	14 Voi siete la luce del mondo; non può restare nascosta una città che sta sopra un monte,
15 Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.	15 né si accende una lampada per metterla sotto il moggio, ma sul candelabro, e così fa luce a tutti quelli che sono nella casa.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.	16 Così risplenda la vostra luce davanti agli uomini, perché vedano le vostre opere buone e rendano gloria al Padre vostro che è nei cieli.
17 "Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them.	17 Non crediate che io sia venuto ad abolire la Legge o i Profeti; non sono venuto ad abolire, ma a dare pieno compimento.
18 For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.	18 In verità io vi dico: finché non siano passati il cielo e la terra, non passerà un solo iota o un solo trattino della Legge, senza che tutto sia avvenuto.
19 Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.	19 Chi dunque trasgredirà uno solo di questi minimi precetti e insegnerà agli altri a fare altrettanto, sarà considerato minimo nel regno dei cieli. Chi invece li osserverà e li insegnerà, sarà considerato grande nel regno dei cieli.
20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.	20 Io vi dico infatti: se la vostra giustizia non supererà quella degli scribi e dei farisei, non entrerete nel regno dei cieli.
21 "You have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.'	21 Avete inteso che fu detto agli antichi: Non ucciderai; chi avrà ucciso dovrà essere sottoposto al giudizio.
22 But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be liable to the hell of fire.	22 Ma io vi dico: chiunque si adira con il proprio fratello dovrà essere sottoposto al giudizio. Chi poi dice al fratello: “Stupido”, dovrà essere sottoposto al sinedrio; e chi gli dice: “Pazzo”, sarà destinato al fuoco della Geènna.
23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,	23 Se dunque tu presenti la tua offerta all’altare e lì ti ricordi che tuo fratello ha qualche cosa contro di te,
24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.	24 lascia lì il tuo dono davanti all’altare, va’ prima a riconciliarti con il tuo fratello e poi torna a offrire il tuo dono.
25 Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison;	25 Mettiti presto d’accordo con il tuo avversario mentre sei in cammino con lui, perché l’avversario non ti consegni al giudice e il giudice alla guardia, e tu venga gettato in prigione.
26 truly, I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny.	26 In verità io ti dico: non uscirai di là finché non avrai pagato fino all’ultimo spicciolo!
27 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery.'	27 Avete inteso che fu detto: Non commetterai adulterio.
28 But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.	28 Ma io vi dico: chiunque guarda una donna per desiderarla, ha già commesso adulterio con lei nel proprio cuore.
29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.	29 Se il tuo occhio destro ti è motivo di scandalo, cavalo e gettalo via da te: ti conviene infatti perdere una delle tue membra, piuttosto che tutto il tuo corpo venga gettato nella Geènna.
30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.	30 E se la tua mano destra ti è motivo di scandalo, tagliala e gettala via da te: ti conviene infatti perdere una delle tue membra, piuttosto che tutto il tuo corpo vada a finire nella Geènna.
31 "It was also said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.'	31 Fu pure detto: “Chi ripudia la propria moglie, le dia l’atto del ripudio”.
32 But I say to you that every one who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.	32 Ma io vi dico: chiunque ripudia la propria moglie, eccetto il caso di unione illegittima, la espone all’adulterio, e chiunque sposa una ripudiata, commette adulterio.
33 "Again you have heard that it was said to the men of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.'	33 Avete anche inteso che fu detto agli antichi: “Non giurerai il falso, ma adempirai verso il Signore i tuoi giuramenti”.
34 But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,	34 Ma io vi dico: non giurate affatto, né per il cielo, perché è il trono di Dio,
35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.	35 né per la terra, perché è lo sgabello dei suoi piedi, né per Gerusalemme, perché è la città del grande Re.
36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.	36 Non giurare neppure per la tua testa, perché non hai il potere di rendere bianco o nero un solo capello.
37 Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'; anything more than this comes from evil.	37 Sia invece il vostro parlare: “Sì, sì”, “No, no”; il di più viene dal Maligno.
38 "You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'	38 Avete inteso che fu detto: Occhio per occhio e dente per dente.
39 But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also;	39 Ma io vi dico di non opporvi al malvagio; anzi, se uno ti dà uno schiaffo sulla guancia destra, tu pórgigli anche l’altra,
40 and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well;	40 e a chi vuole portarti in tribunale e toglierti la tunica, tu lascia anche il mantello.
41 and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.	41 E se uno ti costringerà ad accompagnarlo per un miglio, tu con lui fanne due.
42 Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you.	42 Da’ a chi ti chiede, e a chi desidera da te un prestito non voltare le spalle.
43 "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'	43 Avete inteso che fu detto: Amerai il tuo prossimo e odierai il tuo nemico.
44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,	44 Ma io vi dico: amate i vostri nemici e pregate per quelli che vi perseguitano,
45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.	45 affinché siate figli del Padre vostro che è nei cieli; egli fa sorgere il suo sole sui cattivi e sui buoni, e fa piovere sui giusti e sugli ingiusti.
46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?	46 Infatti, se amate quelli che vi amano, quale ricompensa ne avete? Non fanno così anche i pubblicani?
47 And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?	47 E se date il saluto soltanto ai vostri fratelli, che cosa fate di straordinario? Non fanno così anche i pagani?
48 You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.	48 Voi, dunque, siate perfetti come è perfetto il Padre vostro celeste.
