1 Then all the congregation raised a loud cry; and the people wept that night.	1 Allora il popolo si mise a gridare, epianse tutta quella notte;
2 And all the people of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron; the whole congregation said to them, "Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness!	2 e tutti i figli d'Israele mormorarono contro Mosè ed Aronne, dicendo:
3 Why does the LORD bring us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey; would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?"	3 « Oh, fossimo morti in Egitto! Oh, si potesse morire in questo vasto deserto, per non esser condotti dal Signore in quel paese a perire di spada colla, schiavitù delle nostre moglie dei nostri figli! Non sarebbe meglio tornare in Egitto?
4 And they said to one another, "Let us choose a captain, and go back to Egypt."	4 Nominiamoci un capo, si dicevano l'uno all'altro, e torniamo in Egitto ».
5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel.	5 Mosè ed Aronne, udito ciò, si prostrarono bocconi per terra davanti a tutta la moltitudine dei figli d'Israele.
6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, rent their clothes,	6 Ma Giosuè figlio di Nun, e Caleb figlio di Iefone, stati anch'essi ad esplorare la terra, si stracciaron le vesti,
7 and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, "The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land.	7 e dissero a tutta la moltitudine dei figli d'Israele: « La terra da noi scorsa è molto buona.
8 If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land which flows with milk and honey.	8 e se il Signore ci sarà, così propizio da introdurci in essa, ci darà un paese che stilla latte e miele.
9 Only, do not rebel against the LORD; and do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us; their protection is removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them."	9 Non vi ribellate al Signore; non temete il popolo di quella terra: lo divoreremo come pane; essi sono rimasti senza difesa: il Signore è con noi: non temete ».
10 But all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel.	10 Or mentre tutta la moltitudine gridava e li voleva lapidare, la gloria del Signore apparve a tutti i figli d'Israele sul Tabernacolo dell'alleanza.
11 And the LORD said to Moses, "How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs which I have wrought among them?	11 E il Signore disse a Mosè: «Fino a quando questo popolo mi oltraggerà? Fino a quando non mi crederanno, dopo i prodigi che ho fatto in mezzo a loro?
12 I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they."	12 Io li colpirò colla peste e li sterminerò, e poi farò te capo d'una grande nazione più forte di questa ».
13 But Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for thou didst bring up this people in thy might from among them,	13 Mosè disse al Signore: « Perchè lo sappiano gli Egiziani, di mezzo ai quali hai tratto questo popolo,
14 and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that thou, O LORD, art in the midst of this people; for thou, O LORD, art seen face to face, and thy cloud stands over them and thou goest before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night.	14 e gli abitatori di questa terra, i quali han sentito che tu, o Signore, stai in mezzo a questo popolo, veduto faccia a faccia, e con la tua nuvola li proteggi, e vai loro innanzi di giorno in una colonna di nube, e di notte in una colonna di fuoco,
15 Now if thou dost kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard thy fame will say,	15 che tu hai fatto morire tanta gente come un sol uomo e dicano:
16 'Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to give to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.'	16 Egli, non potendo far entrare questo popolo nella terra che aveva loro giurata, li ha uccisi nel deserto.
17 And now, I pray thee, let the power of the LORD be great as thou hast promised, saying,	17 Sia adunque manifestata la fortezza del Signore, come tu hai giurato, dicendo:
18 'The LORD is slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of fathers upon children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation.'	18 il Signore è paziente e di molta misericordia, perdona l'iniquità e le scelleratezze, ma non lascia impunito alcun colpevole, e punisce l'iniquità dei padri sopra i figli fino alla terza e alla quarta generazione.
19 Pardon the iniquity of this people, I pray thee, according to the greatness of thy steadfast love, and according as thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now."	19 Perdona, ti prego, secondo la tua grande misericordia, il peccato di questo popolo come hai perdonato dall'uscita, d'Egitto fino ad ora ».
20 Then the LORD said, "I have pardoned, according to your word;	20 E il Signore disse: « Ho perdonato, secondo la tua preghiera;
21 but truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD,	21 ma, come io vivo e tutta la terra sarà ripiena della gloria del Signore,
22 none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs which I wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the proof these ten times and have not hearkened to my voice,	22 tutti quelli che han veduta la mia maestà e i prodigi da me fatti in Egitto e nel deserto, che mi han tentato già dieci volte e non hanno ubbidìto alla mia voce,
23 shall see the land which I swore to give to their fathers; and none of those who despised me shall see it.	23 non vedranno la terra che ho promessa con giuramento ai loro padri. Nessuno di quelli che mi hanno oltraggiato, la vedrà;
24 But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it.	24 ma il mio servo Caleb, che pieno di altro spirito,mi ha seguito, lo introdurrò in questa i terra che egli ha scorsa, e la sua discendenza la possederà.
25 Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea."	25 Ora siccome gli Amaleciti e i Cananei abitano nelle valli domani movete il campo e tornate nel deserto verso il Mar Rosso ».
26 And the LORD said to Moses and to Aaron,	26 E il Signore parlò a Mosè e ad Aronne, dicendo:
27 "How long shall this wicked congregation murmur against me? I have heard the murmurings of the people of Israel, which they murmur against me.	27 « Fino a quando questa pessima moltitudine mormorerà contro di me? Ho sentite le querele dei figli d'Israele.
28 Say to them, 'As I live,' says the LORD, 'what you have said in my hearing I will do to you:	28 Di' dunque loro: Com'è vero ch'io vivo, dice il Signore, vi farò come mi avete suggerito:
29 your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and of all your number, numbered from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me,	29 in questo deserto giaceranno i vostri cadaveri; voi tutti che siete entrati nel censimento, da venti anni in su, e che avete mormorato contro di me,
30 not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.	30 non entrerete nella terra sulla quale alzai la mia mano (giurando) di farvi abitare, eccettuato Caleb i figlio di Iefone e Giosuè figlio di Nun.
31 But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land which you have despised.	31 Vi condurrò invece i vostri piccini, dei quali avete detto che sarebbero preda dei nemici: essi vedranno la terra che vi è dispiaciuta;
32 But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness.	32 ma i vostri cadaveri giaceranno nel deserto,
33 And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years, and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness.	33 e i vostri figli andranno raminghi nel deserto per quarant'anni, e sconteranno la vostra fornicazione, finché i cadaveri dei genitori non siano consumati nel deserto.
34 According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, for every day a year, you shall bear your iniquity, forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.'	34 Secondo il numero dei quaranta giorni che ci avete messo ad esplorare quella terra, per quarant'anni, un anno per giorno, sconterete le vostre iniquità e vedrete la mia vendetta:
35 I, the LORD, have spoken; surely this will I do to all this wicked congregation that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die."	35 come ho detto così farò a questa pessima moltitudine che insorse contro di me: essa verrà meno e perirà in questo deserto ».
36 And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and who returned and made all the congregation to murmur against him by bringing up an evil report against the land,	36 Or tutti gli uomini che Mosè aveva mandati ad esplorare quella terra, e che al loro ritorno avevan fatto mormorare tutto il popolo contro Mosè, screditando quella terra come cattiva,
37 the men who brought up an evil report of the land, died by plague before the LORD.	37 morirono, colpiti dalla presenza del Signore;
38 But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive, of those men who went to spy out the land.	38 ma Giosuè figlio di Nun, e Caleb figlio di Iefone rimasero vivi, unici tra quelli che erano andati a esplorare la terra.
39 And Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, and the people mourned greatly.	39 E Mosè riferì queste cose a tutti i figli d'Israele, e il popolo pianse grandemente.
40 And they rose early in the morning, and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, "See, we are here, we will go up to the place which the LORD has promised; for we have sinned."	40 Ma levatisi di buon mattino, salirono sulla cima del monte e dissero: « Noi siamo pronti a salire al luogo che il Signore ha detto: abbiamo peccato ».
41 But Moses said, "Why now are you transgressing the command of the LORD, for that will not succeed?	41 Mosè disse loro: « Perchè trasgredite la parola del Signore? La cosa non v'andrà bene.
42 Do not go up lest you be struck down before your enemies, for the LORD is not among you.	42 Non andate: perchè il Signore non è con voi, perchè non cadiate dinanzi ai vostri nemici.
43 For there the Amalekites and the Canaanites are before you, and you shall fall by the sword; because you have turned back from following the LORD, the LORD will not be with you."	43 Vi stan davanti l'Amalecita e il Cananeo, e voi cadrete sotto la loro spada, perchè non avete voluto obbedire al Signori, e il Signore non sarà con voi ».
44 But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD, nor Moses, departed out of the camp.	44 Ma essi, accecati, salirono sulla cima dei monti. Però l'arca del testamento del Sinai e e Mosè non partirono dagli accampamenti.
45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who dwelt in that hill country came down, and defeated them and pursued them, even to Hormah.	45 Allora l'Amalecita e il Cananeo, che abitavan la montagna, li assalirono, li misero in rotta e li inseguirono fino ad Horma.
