1 And as for me, in the first year of Darius the Mede, I stood up to confirm and strengthen him.	1 Or io fin dal primo anno di Dario il Medo lo assisteva, perchè si fortificasse, e si corroborasse.
2 "And now I will show you the truth. Behold, three more kings shall arise in Persia; and a fourth shall be far richer than all of them; and when he has become strong through his riches, he shall stir up all against the kingdom of Greece.	2 Ed ora io annunzierò a te la verità: Ecco che tre re saranno ancor nella Persia, e il quarto sorpasserà gli altri tutti in ismodata potenza, e quando sarà cresciuto in ricchezze, inciterà tutti contro il regno della Grecia.
3 Then a mighty king shall arise, who shall rule with great dominion and do according to his will.	3 Ma sorgerà un re forte, il quale dominerà con possanza grande, e farà quel che vorrà.
4 And when he has arisen, his kingdom shall be broken and divided toward the four winds of heaven, but not to his posterity, nor according to the dominion with which he ruled; for his kingdom shall be plucked up and go to others besides these.	4 E quand' egli sarà nella sua esaltazione, cadrà il suo regno, e sarà diviso a' quattro venti del cielo, ma non a' suoi discendenti, né avrà potenza simile a quella, con cui egli dominò: imperocchè oltre a quegli (quattro) il suo regno sarà smembrato ancor dagli esteri.
5 "Then the king of the south shall be strong, but one of his princes shall be stronger than he and his dominion shall be a great dominion.	5 E il re di mezzodì sarà possente: ma uno de' principi di quello sarà di questo più forte, e sarà signore di molte genti, perchè grande sarà il suo dominio.
6 After some years they shall make an alliance, and the daughter of the king of the south shall come to the king of the north to make peace; but she shall not retain the strength of her arm, and he and his offspring shall not endure; but she shall be given up, and her attendants, her child, and he who got possession of her.	6 E passati molti anni faranno lega, e la figliuola del re di mezzogiorno anderà sposa del re di settentrione pegno di amicizia: ma ella non avrà stabile, e ferma sorte, né la sua stirpe si manterrà, e sarà messa a morte ella, e la gioventù, che la aveva accompagnata, ed erale stata di conforto in que' tempi.
7 "In those times a branch from her roots shall arise in his place; he shall come against the army and enter the fortress of the king of the north, and he shall deal with them and shall prevail.	7 Ma dalla radice di lui sussisterà un germe. Ed ei verrà con un esercito ed entrerà negli stati del re di settentrione, e li desolerà, e ne diverrà padrone.
8 He shall also carry off to Egypt their gods with their molten images and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and for some years he shall refrain from attacking the king of the north.	8 E condurrà prigionieri in Egitto i loro dei, e le statue, ed anche i vasi preziosi d'argento, e d'oro. Egli trionferà del re di settentrione.
9 Then the latter shall come into the realm of the king of the south but shall return into his own land.	9 E rientrerà nel suo regno il re di mezzodì, e ritornerà nella sua terra.
10 "His sons shall wage war and assemble a multitude of great forces, which shall come on and overflow and pass through, and again shall carry the war as far as his fortress.	10 Ma i figliuoli di quello piccati rauneranno eserciti numerosi, e uno velocemente verrà, inonderà, e ritornerà, e con grand' impeto attaccherà la mischia colle forti squadre di lui;
11 Then the king of the south, moved with anger, shall come out and fight with the king of the north; and he shall raise a great multitude, but it shall be given into his hand.	11 E il re di mezzodì provocato uscirà in campo, e combatterà il re di settentrione, e metterà in ordinanza un esercito formisura grande, e caderanno molti sotto il sue braccio.
12 And when the multitude is taken, his heart shall be exalted, and he shall cast down tens of thousands, but he shall not prevail.	12 E farà moltitudine di prigionieri, e s'innalzerà il cuore di lui, e farà macello di molte migliaia, ma non anderà più avanti;
13 For the king of the north shall again raise a multitude, greater than the former; and after some years he shall come on with a great army and abundant supplies.	13 Imperocché ritornerà il re del settentrione, e metterà insieme un esercito molto più grande di prima, e passato lo spazio di alcuni anni verrà in fretta con grande armata, e con somma, possanza.
14 "In those times many shall rise against the king of the south; and the men of violence among your own people shall lift themselves up in order to fulfil the vision; but they shall fail.	14 E in que' tempi si moveranno molti contro il re di mezzogiorno: i figliuoli eziandio dei prevaricatori del popol tuo si leveranno su, per adempiere la visione, e periranno.
15 Then the king of the north shall come and throw up siegeworks, and take a well-fortified city. And the forces of the south shall not stand, or even his picked troops, for there shall be no strength to stand.	15 E verrà il re di settentrione, e farà assedj, e prenderà le città meglio fortificate, e il valore di mezzodì non potrà stargli a petto, e i suoi campioni anderanno ad opporsegli, ma saran senza forza.
16 But he who comes against him shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him; and he shall stand in the glorious land, and all of it shall be in his power.	16 E quegli venendo sopra il re di mezzodì farà quello, che gli parrà, né sarà chi regger possa davanti a lui, ed egli si poserà nella terra illustre, la quale sotto il potere di lui sarà desolata.
17 He shall set his face to come with the strength of his whole kingdom, and he shall bring terms of peace and perform them. He shall give him the daughter of women to destroy the kingdom; but it shall not stand or be to his advantage.	17 E dirizzerà le sue mire a venire ad occupare tutto il regno di lui, e tratterà con lui di cose giuste, e la figlia bellissima darà a lui per rovinarlo; ma non gli riuscirà, ed ella non lo favorirà.
18 Afterward he shall turn his face to the coastlands, and shall take many of them; but a commander shall put an end to his insolence; indeed he shall turn his insolence back upon him.	18 E si rivolgerà verso le isole, e molte ne occuperà; e farà restare ozioso l'autore della obbrobriosa sua guerra, e il suo obbrobrio ricaderà sopra di lui:
19 Then he shall turn his face back toward the fortresses of his own land; but he shall stumble and fall, and shall not be found.	19 E tornerà indietro nelle provincie del suo regno, e troverà un inciampo,e cadrà, e più non sarà.
20 "Then shall arise in his place one who shall send an exactor of tribute through the glory of the kingdom; but within a few days he shall be broken, neither in anger nor in battle.	20 E succederà a lui un vilissimo uomo, e indegno dell'onore di re, e in pochi giorni finirà non di morte violenta, né in battaglia.
21 In his place shall arise a contemptible person to whom royal majesty has not been given; he shall come in without warning and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.	21 E occuperà il suo luogo un principe vilipeso, e non sarà dato a lui l'onore di re: e verrà di nascosto, e s'impadronirà del regno con frode.
22 Armies shall be utterly swept away before him and broken, and the prince of the covenant also.	22 E le forze di chi combatterà contro (di lui) saranno debellate, e distrutte,e di più il capo dell'alleanza.
23 And from the time that an alliance is made with him he shall act deceitfully; and he shall become strong with a small people.	23 E dopo aver fatta amicizia con lui, userà frode, e anderà innanzi, e vincerà con piccolo esercito.
24 Without warning he shall come into the richest parts of the province; and he shall do what neither his fathers nor his fathers' fathers have done, scattering among them plunder, spoil, and goods. He shall devise plans against strongholds, but only for a time.	24 Ed entrerà nelle città grosse, piene di ricchezze, e farà quel, che non fecer mai i suoi padri, ne i padri de padri suoi, saccheggerà, e spoglierà, e dissiperà le loro ricchezze, e formerà disegni contro le più forti, e ciò fino a un dato tempo.
25 And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall wage war with an exceedingly great and mighty army; but he shall not stand, for plots shall be devised against him.	25 E la sua fortezza, e il suo coraggio lo istigherà ad andare contro il re del mezzogiorno con grande esercito: e il re di mezzogiorno si farà animo alla guerra, mediante i molti, e grandi aiuti, ma non gli varranno, perchè si macchineranno insidie contro di lui.
26 Even those who eat his rich food shall be his undoing; his army shall be swept away, and many shall fall down slain.	26 E que', che mangiano alla sua mensa, saranno la sua rovina, e l'esercito di lui sarà oppresso, e moltissimi saran gli uccisi.
27 And as for the two kings, their minds shall be bent on mischief; they shall speak lies at the same table, but to no avail; for the end is yet to be at the time appointed.	27 Ed anche i due re non penseranno ad altro, che a far del male, e stando insieme a mensa parleranno con finzione, e non arriveranno a' loro fini, perocché la fine è differita ad altro tempo.
28 And he shall return to his land with great substance, but his heart shall be set against the holy covenant. And he shall work his will, and return to his own land.	28 E quegli tornerà nella sua terra con molte ricchezze, e coverà pravi di segni contro il testamento santo, e gli eseguirà, e ritornerà nella sua terra;
29 "At the time appointed he shall return and come into the south; but it shall not be this time as it was before.	29 Nel tempo stabilito ritornerà, e verrà verso il mezzodì, ma questa ultima volta non avverrà come nella prima;
30 For ships of Kittim shall come against him, and he shall be afraid and withdraw, and shall turn back and be enraged and take action against the holy covenant. He shall turn back and give heed to those who forsake the holy covenant.	30 Perocché verranno a lui le navi, e i Romani, ed ei sarà in costernazione, e se ne ritornerà; e si accenderà d'ira contro il testamento santo, e la sfoghera: e se n'anderà e volgerà l'animo contro coloro che abbandonarono il testamento santo.
31 Forces from him shall appear and profane the temple and fortress, and shall take away the continual burnt offering. And they shall set up the abomination that makes desolate.	31 E i suoi strumenti si presenteran con audacia, e contamineranno il santuario (di Dio) forte, e toglieranno il sacrifizio perenne, e vi porranno l'abbominazione della desolazione.
32 He shall seduce with flattery those who violate the covenant; but the people who know their God shall stand firm and take action.	32 E gli empj useranno fraudolenta simulazione contro il testamento. Ma il popolo, che conosce il suo Dio, si terrà fermo, ed agirà.
33 And those among the people who are wise shall make many understand, though they shall fall by sword and flame, by captivity and plunder, for some days.	33 E gli scienziati del popolo illumineranno molta gente, e correranno in contro alla spada, e alle fiamme, e alla schiavitù, e allo spogliamento delle sostanze per molti giorni;
34 When they fall, they shall receive a little help. And many shall join themselves to them with flattery;	34 E nella loro oppressione saran sol levati da piccolo soccorso: e un gran numero si unirà con essi con frode.
35 and some of those who are wise shall fall, to refine and to cleanse them and to make them white, until the time of the end, for it is yet for the time appointed.	35 E cadranno degli scienziati, affinchè sian provati col fuoco, e purgati, e imbiancati sino al tempo già stabilito; perocché rimane tuttora altro tempo.
36 "And the king shall do according to his will; he shall exalt himself and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak astonishing things against the God of gods. He shall prosper till the indignation is accomplished; for what is determined shall be done.	36 E quegli farà tutto quel, ch'ei vorrà, e si leverà in superbia, e insolentirà contro tutti gli dei, e parlerà arrogantemente contro il Dio degli dei, e tutto gli anderà bene, fino a tanto che siasi sfogata l'ira (di Dio); imperocché sta fisso il decreto.
37 He shall give no heed to the gods of his fathers, or to the one beloved by women; he shall not give heed to any other god, for he shall magnify himself above all.	37 Egli non farà stima del Dio de' suoi padri, e sarà dominato dalla libidine, e non terrà conto d'alcuno degli dei, perchè si metterà al di sopra di tutte le cose.
38 He shall honor the god of fortresses instead of these; a god whom his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and costly gifts.	38 Ma renderà onore al Dio Maozim nella sua residenza, e questo dio ignoto a' padri suoi onorerà con doni d'oro, d'argento, di pietre preziose, e di ricca suppellettile.
39 He shall deal with the strongest fortresses by the help of a foreign god; those who acknowledge him he shall magnify with honor. He shall make them rulers over many and shall divide the land for a price.	39 E porrà a difesa della cittadella un dio straniero, e chiunque riconoscerà questo per dio, ei lo ricolmerà, di onori, e daragli potestà sopra molti, e distribuirà a questi gratuitamente la terra.
40 "At the time of the end the king of the south shall attack him; but the king of the north shall rush upon him like a whirlwind, with chariots and horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall come into countries and shall overflow and pass through.	40 E nel tempo stabilito farà a lui guerra il re di mezzodì, e il re di settentrione si moverà contro di lui come un turbine co' suoi cocchi, co' suoi cavalieri, e con grande armata navale: ed entrerà nelle sue provincie, e distruggerà, e passerà avanti.
41 He shall come into the glorious land. And tens of thousands shall fall, but these shall be delivered out of his hand: Edom and Moab and the main part of the Ammonites.	41 Ed entrerà nella terra gloriosa, e molte genti saranno oppresse; e dalle mani di lui queste sole si salveranno, Edom, e Moad, e le frontiere de' figliuoli di Ammon.
42 He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape.	42 E si approprierà le provincie, e la terra d'Egitto non si salverà da lui.
43 He shall become ruler of the treasures of gold and of silver, and all the precious things of Egypt; and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall follow in his train.	43 E si renderà padrone de' tesori di oro, e d'argento, e di tutte le cose preziose dell'Egitto: e passerà anche peli a Libia, e pell' Etiopia.
44 But tidings from the east and the north shall alarm him, and he shall go forth with great fury to exterminate and utterly destroy many.	44 E daranno a lui turbamento le voci, che verran dall'oriente, e dal settentrione, e partirà con grande esercito per devastare, e per far grande strage.
45 And he shall pitch his palatial tents between the sea and the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, with none to help him.	45 E pianterà il padiglione del suo palazzo trai mari sul monte illustre, e santo, e salirà sino alla sua cima, e nissuno gli recherà aiuto.
