1 The word of the LORD came to me:	1 Cette parole de Yahvé me fut adressée:
2 "Son of man, speak to your people and say to them, If I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and make him their watchman;	2 “Fils d’homme, tu diras ceci aux enfants de mon peuple, tu leur diras: Lorsque je fais venir l’épée contre un pays, les gens du pays choisissent quelqu’un parmi eux et le mettent à faire le guet.
3 and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and blows the trumpet and warns the people;	3 S’il voit que l’épée menace l’endroit, il sonne du cor et avertit le peuple.
4 then if any one who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.	4 Si quelqu’un entend le son du cor et ne tient pas compte de l’avertissement, si l’épée vient et le fauche, il est responsable de sa mort.
5 He heard the sound of the trumpet, and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life.	5 S’il a entendu le son du cor et n’a pas tenu compte de l’avertissement, il est responsable, et la sentinelle qui a donné l’avertissement n’a rien à craindre.
6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes, and takes any one of them; that man is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand.	6 Mais si le guetteur voit que l’épée menace et ne sonne pas du cor, si le peuple n’est pas averti et que l’épée vient faucher quelqu’un parmi le peuple, celui-ci sera fauché à cause de sa faute, mais je demanderai compte de son sang à la sentinelle.
7 "So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel; whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me.	7 Toi donc, fils d’homme, je t’ai placé comme une sentinelle pour la maison d’Israël; dès que tu entendras une parole sortir de ma bouche, tu les avertiras de ma part.
8 If I say to the wicked, O wicked man, you shall surely die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand.	8 Lorsque je dirai au méchant: “Méchant, tu vas mourir!” si tu ne lui parles pas, si tu ne le mets pas en garde contre sa mauvaise conduite, le méchant mourra à cause de sa faute, mais je te demanderai compte de son sang.
9 But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way; he shall die in his iniquity, but you will have saved your life.	9 Par contre, si tu as mis en garde le méchant contre sa mauvaise conduite et qu’il ne s’en est pas écarté, s’il ne revient pas de sa mauvaise conduite, il mourra à cause de sa faute et toi tu n’auras rien à craindre.
10 "And you, son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus have you said: 'Our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and we waste away because of them; how then can we live?'	10 Fils d’homme, tu vas dire à la maison d’Israël: On vous entend dire: “Nous sommes sous le poids de nos péchés et nous dépérissons à cause d’eux sans espoir d’en sortir.”
11 Say to them, As I live, says the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways; for why will you die, O house of Israel?	11 Tu leur répondras: “Aussi vrai que je suis vivant - parole de Yahvé - je ne désire pas la mort du méchant, mais qu’il renonce à sa mauvaise conduite et qu’il vive. Revenez, revenez du chemin que vous avez pris: pourquoi mourir, maison d’Israël?”
12 And you, son of man, say to your people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him when he transgresses; and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall by it when he turns from his wickedness; and the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness when he sins.	12 Tu diras aux enfants de ton peuple: La justice du juste ne le sauvera pas après qu’il se sera mis à pécher, et la méchanceté du méchant ne le fera pas tomber après qu’il se sera détourné de sa méchanceté, pour la même raison que le juste, lui, ne vivra pas.
13 Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet if he trusts in his righteousness and commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered; but in the iniquity that he has committed he shall die.	13 Je peux dire au juste: Tu vivras! Mais s’il se repose alors sur ses mérites et se met à commettre l’injustice, on oubliera sa justice et il mourra à cause de l’injustice qu’il aura commise.
14 Again, though I say to the wicked, 'You shall surely die,' yet if he turns from his sin and does what is lawful and right,	14 De même je peux dire au méchant: Tu mourras! Mais s’il se détourne de son péché et se met à faire ce qui est droit et juste,
15 if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.	15 s’il rend ce qu’on lui a prêté ou ce qu’il a volé, s’il marche selon mes commandements et ne commet plus l’injustice, en vérité il vivra et ne mourra pas.
16 None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him; he has done what is lawful and right, he shall surely live.	16 On ne tiendra plus compte de tous les péchés qu’il a commis; puisqu’il agit selon le droit et la justice, il vivra.
17 "Yet your people say, 'The way of the Lord is not just'; when it is their own way that is not just.	17 Les enfants de ton peuple disent: “La façon de voir de Yahvé n’est pas correcte”, mais c’est la leur qui n’est pas correcte.
18 When the righteous turns from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, he shall die for it.	18 Dès que le juste se détourne de sa justice et commet ce qui est injuste, cela même le fait mourir.
19 And when the wicked turns from his wickedness, and does what is lawful and right, he shall live by it.	19 Et quand le méchant se détourne de sa méchanceté et se met à faire ce qui est droit et juste, cela même lui donne la vie.
20 Yet you say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' O house of Israel, I will judge each of you according to his ways."	20 Vous avez beau dire: “La voie de Yahvé n’est pas correcte”, moi je vous jugerai, chacun selon sa conduite, maison d’Israël.
21 In the twelfth year of our exile, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, a man who had escaped from Jerusalem came to me and said, "The city has fallen."	21 En la onzième année de notre déportation, le 5 du dixième mois, un rescapé de Jérusalem arriva chez moi; il me dit: “La ville est tombée.”
22 Now the hand of the LORD had been upon me the evening before the fugitive came; and he had opened my mouth by the time the man came to me in the morning; so my mouth was opened, and I was no longer dumb.	22 Or la main de Yahvé avait été sur moi durant la soirée avant l’arrivée du fugitif, et au matin, au moment où cet homme arrivait chez moi, Yahvé m’ouvrit la bouche: je n’étais plus muet!
23 The word of the LORD came to me:	23 Alors cette parole de Yahvé me fut adressée:
24 "Son of man, the inhabitants of these waste places in the land of Israel keep saying, 'Abraham was only one man, yet he got possession of the land; but we are many; the land is surely given us to possess.'	24 “Fils d’homme, ceux qui sont restés dans les ruines en terre d’Israël disent ceci: Abraham était seul et il a reçu le pays en possession. Nous sommes encore nombreux et le pays nous appartient.
25 Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: You eat flesh with the blood, and lift up your eyes to your idols, and shed blood; shall you then possess the land?	25 Tu leur diras cette parole de Yahvé: “Vous mangez la chair non saignée, vous tournez vos regards vers vos sales idoles, vous répandez le sang, - et vous voulez posséder ce pays?
26 You resort to the sword, you commit abominations and each of you defiles his neighbor's wife; shall you then possess the land?	26 Vous êtes sur des ruines, et vous continuez de vivre de façon scandaleuse, chacun souille la femme de son prochain. Et vous voulez posséder ce pays!”
27 Say this to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: As I live, surely those who are in the waste places shall fall by the sword; and him that is in the open field I will give to the beasts to be devoured; and those who are in strongholds and in caves shall die by pestilence.	27 Tu ajouteras: “Voici ce que dit Yahvé: Aussi vrai que je suis vivant, ceux qui sont dans les ruines tomberont par l’épée, ceux qui sont dans la campagne seront dévorés par les bêtes sauvages, et ceux qui sont dans les abris et les cavernes mourront par la peste.
28 And I will make the land a desolation and a waste; and her proud might shall come to an end; and the mountains of Israel shall be so desolate that none will pass through.	28 Je ferai de ce pays une ruine, je mettrai par terre leur force et leur orgueil, et les montagnes resteront abandonnées, sans habitants.
29 Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I have made the land a desolation and a waste because of all their abominations which they have committed.	29 Le jour où j’aurai fait du pays une ruine et un désert à cause de tous les crimes qu’ils ont commis, ils sauront que je suis Yahvé”
30 "As for you, son of man, your people who talk together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, say to one another, each to his brother, 'Come, and hear what the word is that comes forth from the LORD.'	30 Tu le sais, fils d’homme, les enfants de ton peuple parlent de toi le long des murs et aux portes des maisons, ils se disent l’un à l’autre: “Allons entendre ce qui vient de Yahvé.”
31 And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but they will not do it; for with their lips they show much love, but their heart is set on their gain.	31 Alors ils viennent vers toi comme ils iraient ailleurs, ils s’asseyent près de toi pour entendre tes paroles, mais ils ne les mettent pas en pratique. Le mensonge est dans leur bouche et ils ne cherchent que leur intérêt.
32 And, lo, you are to them like one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays well on an instrument, for they hear what you say, but they will not do it.	32 Tu es pour eux comme une chanson qu’on aime: la voix est belle et il joue bien! Ils écoutent tes paroles mais ils n’en font rien.
33 When this comes--and come it will!--then they will know that a prophet has been among them."	33 Mais quand cela arrivera - et cela va arriver - ils sauront qu’il y avait un prophète au milieu d’eux.
