Ezekiel 17

1 The word of the LORD came to me:	1 La parole de Yahvé me fut adressée en ces termes:
2 "Son of man, propound a riddle, and speak an allegory to the house of Israel;	2 Fils d'homme, propose une énigme et présente une parabole à la maison d'Israël.
3 say, Thus says the Lord GOD: A great eagle with great wings and long pinions, rich in plumage of many colors, came to Lebanon and took the top of the cedar;	3 Tu diras: Ainsi parle le Seigneur Yahvé. Le grand aigle, aux grandes ailes, à l'envergure immense,couvert de plumes multicolores, vint au Liban et prit la cime du cèdre;
4 he broke off the topmost of its young twigs and carried it to a land of trade, and set it in a city of merchants.	4 il cueillit le plus haut de ses rameaux, l'emporta au pays des marchands et le déposa dans une villede trafiquants.
5 Then he took of the seed of the land and planted it in fertile soil; he placed it beside abundant waters. He set it like a willow twig,	5 Puis il prit une des semences du pays et la mit dans un champ préparé; au bord d'un cours d'eauabondant, il la mit comme un saule.
6 and it sprouted and became a low spreading vine, and its branches turned toward him, and its roots remained where it stood. So it became a vine, and brought forth branches and put forth foliage.	6 Elle poussa et devint une vigne féconde, de taille modeste, qui tourna ses branches vers l'aigle,alors que ses racines étaient sous elle. Elle devint une vigne, donna des tiges et poussa des sarments.
7 "But there was another great eagle with great wings and much plumage; and behold, this vine bent its roots toward him, and shot forth its branches toward him that he might water it. From the bed where it was planted	7 Il y eut un autre grand aigle, aux grandes ailes, aux plumes abondantes. Et voici que cette vignetendit ses racines vers lui et dirigea vers lui ses branches, pour qu'il l'arrosât, depuis le parterre où elle étaitplantée.
8 he transplanted it to good soil by abundant waters, that it might bring forth branches, and bear fruit, and become a noble vine.	8 Dans un champ fertile, au bord d'un cours d'eau abondant, elle était plantée, pour pousser desbranchages et porter du fruit, pour devenir une vigne magnifique.
9 Say, Thus says the Lord GOD: Will it thrive? Will he not pull up its roots and cut off its branches, so that all its fresh sprouting leaves wither? It will not take a strong arm or many people to pull it from its roots.	9 Dis: Ainsi parle le Seigneur Yahvé. Réussira-t-elle? L'aigle ne va-t-il pas arracher ses racines, ôterses fruits, en sorte que sèchent toutes les feuilles nouvelles qu'elle poussera sans qu'il soit besoin d'un braspuissant et d'un peuple nombreux pour l'enlever de ses racines?
10 Behold, when it is transplanted, will it thrive? Will it not utterly wither when the east wind strikes it--wither away on the bed where it grew?"	10 La voici plantée, réussira-t-elle? Au souffle du vent d'est, ne va-t-elle pas sécher? Sur lesparterres où elle a poussé, elle séchera!
11 Then the word of the LORD came to me:	11 La parole de Yahvé me fut adressée en ces termes:
12 "Say now to the rebellious house, Do you not know what these things mean? Tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon came to Jerusalem, and took her king and her princes and brought them to him to Babylon.	12 Parle à l'engeance de rebelles. Ne savez-vous pas ce que cela signifie? Dis: Voici que le roi deBabylone est venu à Jérusalem; il en a enlevé le roi et les princes et les a emmenés chez lui, à Babylone.
13 And he took one of the seed royal and made a covenant with him, putting him under oath. (The chief men of the land he had taken away,	13 Il a pris un rejeton royal et a conclu alliance avec lui, il lui a fait prêter serment, après avoirenlevé les grands du pays,
14 that the kingdom might be humble and not lift itself up, and that by keeping his covenant it might stand.)	14 pour que le royaume demeure modeste et sans ambition, et pour qu'il garde son alliance et lamaintienne.
15 But he rebelled against him by sending ambassadors to Egypt, that they might give him horses and a large army. Will he succeed? Can a man escape who does such things? Can he break the covenant and yet escape?	15 Mais ce prince s'est révolté contre lui, en envoyant des messagers en Egypte pour se faire donnerdes chevaux et des gens en grand nombre. Réussira-t-il? S'en tirera-t-il, celui qui a fait cela? Il a rompu l'allianceet il s'en tirerait?
16 As I live, says the Lord GOD, surely in the place where the king dwells who made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant with him he broke, in Babylon he shall die.	16 Par ma vie, oracle du Seigneur Yahvé, je le jure: c'est dans le pays du roi qui l'a fait régner, luidont il a méprisé le serment et rompu l'alliance, c'est en plein milieu de Babylone qu'il mourra.
17 Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company will not help him in war, when mounds are cast up and siege walls built to cut off many lives.	17 Avec sa grande armée et ses troupes nombreuses, le Pharaon ne le sauvera pas par la guerre,lorsqu'on élèvera un remblai et qu'on construira des retranchements, pour détruire tant de vies humaines.
18 Because he despised the oath and broke the covenant, because he gave his hand and yet did all these things, he shall not escape.	18 Il a méprisé le serment en rompant l'alliance, alors qu'il s'était engagé et avait fait tout cela: il nes'en tirera pas.
19 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: As I live, surely my oath which he despised, and my covenant which he broke, I will requite upon his head.	19 C'est pourquoi, ainsi parle le Seigneur Yahvé. Par ma vie, je le jure: mon serment qu'il améprisé, mon alliance qu'il a rompue, je les ferai retomber sur sa tête.
20 I will spread my net over him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon and enter into judgment with him there for the treason he has committed against me.	20 J'étendrai mon filet sur lui, il sera pris dans mon rets, je le mènerai à Babylone et je l'y punirai del'infidélité qu'il a commise envers moi.
21 And all the pick of his troops shall fall by the sword, and the survivors shall be scattered to every wind; and you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken."	21 Quant à toute son élite, parmi toutes ses troupes, elle tombera par l'épée, et les survivants serontéparpillés à tous les vents. Et vous saurez que moi, Yahvé, j'ai parlé.
22 Thus says the Lord GOD: "I myself will take a sprig from the lofty top of the cedar, and will set it out; I will break off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one, and I myself will plant it upon a high and lofty mountain;	22 Ainsi parle le Seigneur Yahvé: Moi, je prendrai à la cime du grand cèdre, au plus haut de sesrameaux je cueillerai une jeune pousse et je la planterai moi-même sur une montagne élevée et altière.
23 on the mountain height of Israel will I plant it, that it may bring forth boughs and bear fruit, and become a noble cedar; and under it will dwell all kinds of beasts; in the shade of its branches birds of every sort will nest.	23 Sur la haute montagne d'Israël je le planterai. Il poussera des branchages, il produira du fruit etdeviendra un cèdre magnifique. Toutes sortes d'oiseaux habiteront sous lui, toutes sortes de volatiles reposeront àl'ombre de ses branches.
24 And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD bring low the high tree, and make high the low tree, dry up the green tree, and make the dry tree flourish. I the LORD have spoken, and I will do it."	24 Et tous les arbres de la campagne sauront que c'est moi, Yahvé, qui abaisse l'arbre élevé et quiélève l'arbre abaissé, qui fait sécher l'arbre vert et fleurir l'arbre sec. Moi, Yahvé, j'ai dit et je fais.
