Isaiah 40

1 Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.	1 “Consolez, consolez mon peuple, dit Yahvé votre Dieu.
2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins.	2 Parlez au cœur de Jérusalem, criez-lui ce message: son esclavage a pris fin, sa dette est payée, Yahvé lui a rendu au double pour toutes ses fautes.”
3 A voice cries: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.	3 Une voix crie: “Ouvrez dans le désert la route de Yahvé, tracez dans la steppe un chemin pour notre Dieu.
4 Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.	4 Toute vallée sera comblée, toute montagne et toute colline abaissée, les hauteurs se changeront en plaines, et les monts en larges vallées.
5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken."	5 La Gloire de Yahvé va se révéler, et tous les mortels ensemble le verront, car la bouche de Yahvé a parlé.”
6 A voice says, "Cry!" And I said, "What shall I cry?" All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field.	6 Une voix m’a dit: “Crie!” J’ai répondu: “Que dois-je crier?” “Que toute chair est comme l’herbe, et sa grâce comme la fleur des champs.
7 The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the LORD blows upon it; surely the people is grass.	7 L’herbe se dessèche et la fleur se fane, lorsque sur elles passe le souffle de Yahvé.
8 The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever.	8 L’herbe se dessèche et la fleur se fane, mais la parole de notre Dieu demeure à jamais.”
9 Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, "Behold your God!"	9 Monte sur une hauteur, toi qui portes à Sion la nouvelle, élève avec force ta voix, toi qui portes à Jérusalem ses nouvelles. N’aie pas peur de crier, dis aux villes de Juda: Voici votre Dieu!
10 Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.	10 Le Seigneur Yahvé vient avec puissance, son bras lui a tout soumis. Il apporte avec lui son butin: voyez devant lui ses récompenses.
11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd, he will gather the lambs in his arms, he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young.	11 Comme un berger il fait paître son troupeau, et son bras le rassemble, il porte les agneaux sur sa poitrine, il mène les brebis qui allaitent.
12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand and marked off the heavens with a span, enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?	12 Qui a refermé sa main sur les eaux de la mer, qui a pris les dimensions du ciel ou recueilli tous les sables du globe? Qui a pesé les montagnes à la balance, qui a mis les collines sur le plateau?
13 Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, or as his counselor has instructed him?	13 Et qui a pris la mesure de l’esprit de Yahvé? Où est le conseiller qui l’assiste?
14 Whom did he consult for his enlightenment, and who taught him the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding?	14 A-t-il guidé quelqu’un, l’a-t-il éclairé, lui a-t-il enseigné l’art de juger, lui a-t-il fait connaître les voies de la sagesse et montré les moyens les plus efficaces?
15 Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are accounted as the dust on the scales; behold, he takes up the isles like fine dust.	15 Les nations sont pour lui la goutte au bord du seau, la poussière qu’on néglige sur le plateau de la balance. Et les îles! Elles pèsent comme un grain de sable.
16 Lebanon would not suffice for fuel, nor are its beasts enough for a burnt offering.	16 Il ne trouverait pas assez de bois au Liban, ses animaux ne lui suffiraient pas pour un holocauste.
17 All the nations are as nothing before him, they are accounted by him as less than nothing and emptiness.	17 Les nations sont comme rien devant lui, c’est un zéro, elles ne valent pas pour lui.
18 To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with him?	18 À qui voulez-vous comparer Dieu? quelle image pourrez-vous en donner?
19 The idol! a workman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold, and casts for it silver chains.	19 une statue, peut-être, coulée par un artisan, que l’orfèvre a plaquée d’or, avec des chaînes d’argent?
20 He who is impoverished chooses for an offering wood that will not rot; he seeks out a skilful craftsman to set up an image that will not move.	20 Ou bien le bois qu’on a choisi non périssable, travaillé par un expert, solidement fixé pour que rien ne l’ébranle?
21 Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?	21 Ne l’avez-vous donc pas appris, entendu? Ne vous l’a-t-on pas dit depuis le début pour que vous sachiez comment la terre fut mise en place?
22 It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in;	22 Yahvé habite plus haut que la voûte sur la terre: de là ses habitants paraissent des sauterelles. Il a étendu les cieux comme un voile, il les a déroulés, et c’est la tente où il demeure.
23 who brings princes to nought, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing.	23 Il sait réduire à rien les puissants, anéantir ceux qui gouvernent le monde.
24 Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble.	24 À peine sont-ils plantés, à peine sont-ils semés, à peine la tige a-t-elle pris racines, que lui, d’un souffle les dessèche, et le tourbillon comme pailles les emporte.
25 To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One.	25 À qui voulez-vous me comparer? dit le Saint. Quelqu’un est-il mon égal?
26 Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name; by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing.	26 Regardez au-dessus de vous: dites-moi qui les a créées? Vous avez là son armée, il les a déployées, et toutes il les connaît par leur nom; son autorité, sa force sont telles, que pas une n’échappe.
27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, "My way is hid from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God"?	27 Pourquoi dis-tu, Jacob, pourquoi répètes-tu, Israël: “Yahvé ne voit pas, mon Dieu ne s’occupe pas de ma cause?”
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary, his understanding is unsearchable.	28 Ne l’as-tu donc pas appris, entendu? Yahvé est un Dieu éternel, il a créé jusqu’aux extrémités du monde. Il ne se fatigue pas, il ne se lasse pas; sa sagesse est impénétrable.
29 He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.	29 Il rend des forces à qui est fatigué, donne de l’énergie à celui qui est faible.
30 Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted;	30 Même les jeunes se fatiguent; mais lorsqu’ils sont las et chancellent,
31 but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.	31 ceux qui s’appuient sur Yahvé retrouvent des forces; il leur pousse des ailes comme à l’aigle, ils courent et ne se fatiguent pas, ils marchent et ne se lassent pas.
