Isaiah 36

1 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them.	1 Nell'anno decimoquarto del re Ezechia, Sennàcherib re di Assiria assalì e si impadronì di tutte le fortezze di Giuda.
2 And the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem, with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Fuller's Field.	2 Il re di Assiria mandò poi da Lachis a Gerusalemme contro il re Ezechia il gran coppiere con un grande esercito. Egli fece sosta presso il canale della piscina superiore, sulla strada del campo del lavandaio.
3 And there came out to him Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder.	3 Gli andarono incontro Eliakìm figlio di Chelkìa, il maggiordomo, Sebnà lo scrivano e Ioach figlio di Asaf, l'archivista.
4 And the Rabshakeh said to them, "Say to Hezekiah, 'Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: On what do you rest this confidence of yours?	4 Il gran coppiere disse loro: "Riferite a Ezechia: Così dice il grande re, il re di Assiria: Che significa questa sicurezza che dimostri?
5 Do you think that mere words are strategy and power for war? On whom do you now rely, that you have rebelled against me?	5 Pensi forse che la semplice parola possa sostituire il consiglio e la forza nella guerra? Ora, in chi confidi tu, che ti ribelli contro di me?
6 Behold, you are relying on Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which will pierce the hand of any man who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who rely on him.	6 Ecco, tu confidi nell'Egitto, in questo sostegno di canna spezzata che penetra la mano e la fora a chi vi si appoggia; tale è il faraone re d'Egitto per chiunque confida in lui.
7 But if you say to me, "We rely on the LORD our God," is it not he whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and to Jerusalem, "You shall worship before this altar"?	7 Se mi dite: Noi confidiamo nel Signore nostro Dio, non è forse lo stesso a cui Ezechia distrusse le alture e gli altari, ordinando alla gente di Giuda e di Gerusalemme: Vi prostrerete solo davanti a questo altare?
8 Come now, make a wager with my master the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders upon them.	8 Or bene, fa' una scommessa con il mio signore, il re di Assiria; io ti darò duemila cavalli, se puoi procurarti cavalieri per essi.
9 How then can you repulse a single captain among the least of my master's servants, when you rely on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?	9 Come potresti far indietreggiare uno solo dei più piccoli sudditi del mio signore? Eppure tu confidi nell'Egitto per i carri e i cavalieri!
10 Moreover, is it without the LORD that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.'"	10 Ora, è forse contro il volere del Signore che io mi sono mosso contro questo paese per distruggerlo? Il Signore mi ha detto: Muovi contro questo paese e distruggilo".
11 Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, "Pray, speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; do not speak to us in the language of Judah within the hearing of the people who are on the wall."	11 Eliakìm, Sebnà e Ioach risposero al gran coppiere: "Parla ai tuoi servi in aramaico, poiché noi lo comprendiamo; non parlare in ebraico alla portata degli orecchi del popolo che è sulle mura".
12 But the Rabshakeh said, "Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and drink their own urine?"	12 Il gran coppiere replicò: "Forse sono stato mandato al tuo signore e a te dal mio signore per dire tali parole o non piuttosto agli uomini che stanno sulle mura, i quali presto saranno ridotti a mangiare i loro escrementi e a bere la loro urina con voi?".
13 Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out in a loud voice in the language of Judah: "Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!	13 Il gran coppiere allora si alzò e gridò in ebraico: "Udite le parole del gran re, del re di Assiria.
14 Thus says the king: 'Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you.	14 Dice il re: Non vi inganni Ezechia, poiché egli non potrà salvarvi.
15 Do not let Hezekiah make you rely on the LORD by saying, "The LORD will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria."	15 Ezechia non vi induca a confidare nel Signore dicendo: Certo, il Signore ci libererà; questa città non sarà messa nelle mani del re di Assiria.
16 Do not listen to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: Make your peace with me and come out to me; then every one of you will eat of his own vine, and every one of his own fig tree, and every one of you will drink the water of his own cistern;	16 Non date ascolto a Ezechia, poiché così dice il re di Assiria: Fate la pace con me e arrendetevi; allora ognuno potrà mangiare i frutti della propria vigna e del proprio fico e ognuno potrà bere l'acqua della sua cisterna,
17 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.	17 finché io non venga per condurvi in un paese come il vostro, paese di frumento e di mosto, di pane e di vigne.
18 Beware lest Hezekiah mislead you by saying, "The LORD will deliver us." Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?	18 Non vi illuda Ezechia dicendovi: Il Signore ci libererà. Gli dèi delle nazioni hanno forse liberato ognuno il proprio paese dalla mano del re di Assiria?
19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?	19 Dove sono gli dèi di Amat e di Arpad? Dove sono gli dèi di Sefarvàim? Hanno essi forse liberato Samaria dalla mia mano?
20 Who among all the gods of these countries have delivered their countries out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?"	20 Quali mai, fra tutti gli dèi di quelle regioni, hanno liberato il loro paese dalla mia mano? Potrà forse il Signore liberare Gerusalemme dalla mia mano?".
21 But they were silent and answered him not a word, for the king's command was, "Do not answer him."	21 Quelli tacquero e non gli risposero neppure una parola, perché l'ordine del re era: "Non rispondetegli".
22 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh.	22 Eliakìm figlio di Chelkìa, il maggiordomo, Sebnà lo scrivano e Ioach figlio di Asaf, l'archivista, si presentarono a Ezechia con le vesti stracciate e gli riferirono le parole del gran coppiere.
